I purchased this for our 5 year old son. He has truly enjoyed listening to the sweet stories of friendship. While we have the books, I agree with the other reviewer, you really do not have to read along to be entertained. We put the tape in our son's player and he listens while drifting off to sleep. Unlike some children's books on tape, this is done so well - the timing, clarity and voices keep your interest. This is a winner!!

So Keisha breaks her parents rules and continues to see him. Suddenly Keisha's relationship with Johnathan takes a turn for the worst. Johnathan takes Keisha to his appartment and when Keisha doesn't coperate with Johnathan's plans that's when the big trouble starts. He tries to rape Keisha and he attempts to kill her with his jack knife.
I highly recommend this book. It may be a little boring in the begining but once your get a little further into it, your hooked. It also has a great moral/lesson to it. Another thing it shows how sexual preditors can be anywhere and it can happen to anyone. I enjoyed reading this book and think its a great book for teenage girls to read.

Kaffir Boy: An Autobiography--The True Story of a Black Youth's Coming of Age in Apartheid South Africa Review

Kaffir Boy: An Autobiography--The True Story of a Black Youth's Coming of Age in Apartheid South Africa
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Not much of an introduction needed here: the full title of the book accurately sums up the subject. This was a book that I bought in used paperback not certain whether I'd finish it, and found myself deeply engrossed in the story and in reflection upon Mathabane's descriptions of life under apartheid.
Mathabane shows a great many literary strengths here. His candid expression of his own feelings can't help but inspire the reader's respect and interest; the whole book feels 'spoken from the heart'. His prejudices, embarrassing moments, times of despair, moments of triumph, and peer relations are all here. Of particular interest to me (naturally, as a white non-South African) was the development of his views of white people--South Africans and foreigners--and how his understanding becomes broader as he meets a wider variety of people. I came away thinking that I'd probably really like Mark Mathabane in person.
His youth in fact makes a good story, one that builds nicely to a conclusion I won't spoil for you except to carefully mention that this is the story only of his youth, not of his whole life. And his descriptive talent, which painted such vivid and contrasting portraits of the life he led, is worthy of the great storytellers of the proud tribes of southern Africa from which he is descended. I would offer the caveat that the book contains explicit sexual and violent scenes that most people would consider inappropriate for children under 14 (and even then I'm assuming a pretty well-adjusted child). Mathabane is never himself vulgar, but some of his experiences certainly were, and he gets through them as quickly as possible but I see why he didn't omit them.
If you ever wondered what life was like for South African blacks under apartheid, particularly for a highly gifted member of that group striving upward against every barrier that several cultures could place before him, this'll be a revelation.

Code of the Street: Decency, Violence, and the Moral Life of the Inner City Review

Code of the Street: Decency, Violence, and the Moral Life of the Inner City
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Elijah Anderson has done an outstanding job of explaining the sociological, economic, and geographical factors that contribute to the mentality commonly seen among young men in the inner city and the violence that can emerge as a result.
As a young black man that grew up in a two parent home in suburban Maryland, I was extremely confused when I left my small town for middle school. It was there that I was first exposed to black children with less fortunate financial backgrounds, single parent homes, and low value of education and order. As Anderson explains, even in the suburban regions of Maryland adjacent to D.C. inner city attitudes, styles, trends, and even volatility can be seen in young blacks as a result of 'cultural diffusion'. A phenomenon which has a peculiar property of moving up the socioeconomic ladder in the black community.
What I appreciate about Mr. Anderson's book most is that it has finally helped me to answer the question of 'WHY', which has tormented me for almost 15 years. Why have I found myself to be different than many of my black peers as a young man and an adult when all I wanted was a good education, a good job, and to live a decent life. EVERY person, Black or White who has found themself glaring at the low socioeconomic black community and wondering what is wrong, or quoting Bill Cosby Rhetoric while watching a group of hoodlums bully any and everyone off of the sidewalk, or turning up your nose at a pregnant 19 year old girl yelling at her toddler as she mopes down the sidewalk... YOU MUST READ THIS BOOK. Understanding is the beginning of dealing with what has become everyone's problem.

You would only be looking at this book if you love the movies, and if you love the movies, this is a book for you. The sheer volume of quotes is quite amazing. From the obscure to the well known and loved. It's a great book for compiling quiz questions or to simply flick through if you have a lazy moment. The very nature of the ever evolving movies means that of course it will quite quickly become out of date, but never obsolete as the quotes from these movies are timeless.

Ten Lies the Church Tells Women: How the Bible Has Been Misused to Keep Women in Spiritual Bondage Review

Ten Lies the Church Tells Women: How the Bible Has Been Misused to Keep Women in Spiritual Bondage
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I had the privilege of hearing David Yonggi Cho speak at a conference last July, pastor of the largest church in the world, which hails, not 10,000 but 700,000 members. As Grady points out in this book, one of the secrets to the church's success is because women are actively involved in the spiritual leadership of its members. This is a fact with which many other denominations have grappled, as Yonggi Cho states as quoted in Grady's book, (properly footnoted, I might add).
Concerning accusations in earlier reviews that Grady twists the Scripture or uses faulty interpretations: unlike many others who make claims, not only does Grady first admit that his book isn't the Gospel itself and thus is open to debate, he aids his readers by properly citing all of his sources; if you have an issue with an interpretation, by all means, find the source that he, like a true scholar, provided and make up your own mind. You should be doing this even if you do believe what he says.
I'm also somewhat stunned by a previous reader's parallel of the Fall to a thief stealing bread. I'll address this since I'm sure others have the same mentality. Having read the review, I find myself wondering if this reader has a proper grasp of the Christian faith that I assume he follows. Yes, there are consequences as a result of a thief stealing bread. However, the incredibly wonderful aspect of Christianity is that the thief will not have to rot in jail, even after apologizing and returning the bread because someone else (namely Christ) has already served time in his place. I fail to see how Eve's curse of subordination should not be wiped clean by Christ's sacrifice just as ALL other sins were wiped away. By saying otherwise, one is either assuming that the first woman's sin was simply too great for even the Son of God, or that simply dismissing Paul's statement of "...For there is neither male nor female, for all are one in Christ" as only applying to the afterlife.
Grady, on the otherhand is a strong proponent of the fully redemptive qualities of Jesus Christ and thus attempts to unearth long held prejudices against woman by basing his arguments on this foundational premise. If one is willing to admit that Jesus loves woman too, one might see that Grady makes several good arguments. (On a side note, I would also like to add stealing bread when one is starving is no longer a crime. One no longer has to serve 10 years of hard labor as in the case of Jean Valjean in Les Miserable, which the previous writer appears to be referencing.)
I think one of Grady's greatest accomplishment in this book wasn't presenting and attempting to refute 10 Lies (I think he succeeded, by the way) but rather exposing the reader to the multitude of ways in which woman have contributed to the ministry both in the past and in the present. If anyone thinks that woman should be satisfied with baking cookies when she feels the call to ministry, I strongly urge them to take a look at this book and perhaps look at the Yoido Full Gospel Church, 700,000 members and still growing, because a pastor was willing to give women a chance at spiritual leadership.

"Although the book is geared toward morning meditations, you can benefit from it anytime, day or night. I suggest keeping it on your bedside table or desk so that you can refer to it whenever you need a comforting boost from above." - From the book
Spiritual psychologist Doreen Virtue encourages readers to devote a portion of each day to connecting with the angels in the book Daily Guidance from Your Angels: 365 Angelic Messages to Soothe, Heal, and Open Your Heart. Drawing from years of experience as an angel therapist and clairvoyant, she provides 365 specific messages from the angelic realm designed to uplift, inform and inspire.
In her own spiritual practice, Virtue notes that when she has allowed herself to skip an occasional morning of reflection, her day wasn't as fun or satisfying. Desiring to facilitate daily devotions for readers to ensure a magical, fulfilling day, the author provides reflections ranging from profound teachings to beneficial ways to approach the day. These daily meditations aren't dated, so you can begin anywhere, anytime--either reading consecutive meditations or choosing one at random.
Some of the themes in Daily Guidance from Your Angels include:
*Be Gentle With Yourself
*Say Goodbye to Guilt
*Honor Your Agreements
*Bless Your Meals

Save The Cat The Last Book on Screenwriting You'll Ever Need Review

Save The Cat The Last Book on Screenwriting You'll Ever Need
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
OK, maybe not the last book you'll ever need, but if you are a screenwriter or play one on TV, this just may be the BEST book you'll ever need, or read, on the subject of how to break into the big screen big time as a writer of tall tales.
Blake Snyder is a working, selling writer himself, so that gives the reader a true inside glimpse into what it's like, what it takes, and what to expect on the long road to screenwriting stardom. Many screenwriting how-to tomes are written by guys and gals who have few or no real studio credits, so with this book you can be sure you are getting the info direct from the source of a successful member of the Hollywood elite.
Snyder starts out with a bang, describing how important a good title, pitch and concept are, and giving tons of useful advise for whipping those log lines into shape, the best shape ever in fact, for as the author points out, many industry powerbrokers won't even look beyond a log line...so it better be good. Damned good. He then discusses how to make your story like everything else out there, only different, and if you can come to understand that paradox, you will be a success indeed.
We also learn about the importance of creating characters that fit certain archetypes, like the hero and the villain, and how the use of Jungian archetypes can help you shape and mold real people that resonate with the audience. Also covered is the importance of knowing your genre and how to best amplify the style of that genre.
Another chapter deals with the author's own system of breaking a script down to 15 beats, and how every successful movie fits this same beat system. We also learn the art of building scenes and the use of those wonderful index cards for moving and changing scene progression, as well as following the basic rules of a great story, rewriting and reshaping the script, and of course, what the heck to do with the darned thing once you've finished. I really appreciated the glossary of screenwriting and industry terminology, something every writer should know (or at least pretend to know in meetings).
Although this book does follow the mold of many other screenwriting books before it, focusing both on writing and marketing the script and including summaries and exercises for the reader to expand their understanding, the difference that makes this book stand out is the honesty and directness of the author in giving the reader every best chance to comprehend and conquer the inner and outer workings of screenwriting. "Save the Cat" (I'll let you find out what the title means on your own!) doesn't hold back on doling out the solid advise, and presents it in a way that will not only inspire screenwriters, but also make them more aware of just how hard it really is to succeed. No sugar-coating here, but plenty of motivation and great info packed into one book.
So, "Save the Cat" may not be the final screenwriting book you will ever need, should for some reason the entire industry change and adopt some bizarro new standard of screenwriting that will require you to learn the metric system and Pig-Latin. But barring a drastic reshaping of the industry standard (I think most execs are too lazy to change much of anything), this is no doubt the one book that will do more to help you achieve success and get your two-brad-bound puppy through the door than any other I've read so far. And believe me, folks, I've read them all.
FADE OUT.

From Ice-Breaker to Missile Boat: The Evolution of Israel's Naval Strategy (Contributions in Military Studies) Review

From Ice-Breaker to Missile Boat: The Evolution of Israel's Naval Strategy (Contributions in Military Studies)
Average Reviews:

Tzalel has given us an excellent little gem of a book in which he thoughtfully and critically offers a history of the navy of modern Israel. He has availed himself of many sources unavailable to those who cannot read Hebrew, and has conducted several interviews with some rare individuals who have reliable knowledge of Israeli naval history. The book is not the exhaustive treatment one might expect, but given the secrecy of his subject and the fact that most scholarship has overlooked it, Tzalel has done yeoman work indeed.

As a small nation in a hostile region, Israel has made defense a top priority. Tzalel takes a critical look at the naval branch of Israel's defense forces to consider its history, its performance, and its overall importance to maintaining national security. From a motley collection of illegal immigrant ships operated prior to the birth of the state, the Israelis have since the 1960s established a modern navy. However, Tzalel argues, the modernization and expansion of the Israeli navy has been driven more by an excess of funds and the lack of clearly defined priorities than by any real necessity.

Like most small countries, Israel has no need to command the sea during peace or in wartime. The author examines each step of naval development by direct correlation to the perceived need for each new phase and the circumstances that led naval and military leaders to make specific choices, and he discusses the benefits of these choices on the field of battle. He hopes to map the complex relationship between the navy men, the Israeli government, and public sentiment. Although the nation has managed to create a new and impressive class of warship, the Sa'ar FAC(M) and its larger derivatives, Tzalel contends that the military logic behind such naval construction was faulty and that the nation's submarine flotilla constitutes a sheer waste of monetary and human resources.

Profit Over People: Neoliberalism & Global Order Review

Profit Over People: Neoliberalism and Global Order
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Edit of 20 Jun 09 to add links (feature not available back then)
This book begins with a very fine introduction by Robert McChesney, who defines neoliberalism as an economic paradigm that leaves a small number of private parties in control and able to maximize their profit (at the expense of the people). He goes on to note that a distracted or apathetic or depoliticized public essentially "goes along" with this, resulting in the loss of community and the rise of consumerism.
Chomsky himself, over the course of 167 pages, points out the damages of neo-liberalism (public abdicating power to corporations), not just to underdeveloped nations and their peoples, but to the American people themselves, who are suffering, today, from a fifteen year decline in education, health, and increased inequality between the richest and the poorest.
Over the course of several chapters, he discusses various U.S. policies, including the U.S. policy of using "security" as a pretext for subsidizing the transfer of taxpayer funds to major arms dealers. The declaration of Cuba as a threat to U.S. national security is one that Mexico could not support--as one of their diplomats explained at the time: "if we publicly declare that Cuba is a threat to our security, forty million Mexicans will die laughing."
At the end of it all, Chomsky comes down to the simple matter of protecting both civilization and the civilians from their own governments in cahoots with corporations. His observations on the deaths by disease, starvation, and so on, at the same time that billions are being spent on arms which perpetuate the cycles of violence, are relevant. So also are his observations on the dramatic increase in both the extent and the damages caused by increasingly unregulated financial markets. He singles out the Multilateral Agreement on Investment (MAI) as an especially pernicious organization whose machinations are invisible to the public and harmful as well.
I note with interest a review of this book that seeks to call Chomsky a liar, uninformed, and a laughingstock among "serious" scholars. I wish to address that point of view kindly. I can understand, when scholarship consists largely of going through the motions, reading a limited number of works, and answering by rote with the prescribed thought, how so many of our allegedly educated people in business and government are simply socially tuned in. I have myself come to the conclusion that Washington runs on 2% of the available international information (and is largely witless about the 75% or so that is in foreign languages), and I also agree with Howard Bloom's observation in Global Brain: The Evolution of Mass Mind from the Big Bang to the 21st Century, to wit, that half one's brain cells are killed off by the time one is an adult, due to normal biological adjustments to accommodate the prescribed social, cultural, and intellectual parameters that are demanded if one is to "get along." In that light, I view Chomsky as one of our more important vaccinations against premature stupidity among our loosely-educated adult policymakers. For myself, with considerable reading and a 25-year national security career behind me, I find that while Chomsky is repetitious, he is generally meticulous about foot-noting (something that cannot be said for the lazy authors residing in most think tanks, all of them being paid to think along very specifically prescribed directions).
The bottom line for me is clear: citizens must read and think, or perish from the earth as slaves to those who control money. There is only one thing that matters more than money in this world, and that is the vote. In a representative democracy, the vote can be bought with ease *until* the moment comes when citizens realize that they can combine the use of public sources to reach conclusions (open source intelligence) with self-organization via the Internet, with civil action (cyber-advocacy, street-advocacy, communication and voting) to *take back the power.* It is not terrorism that scares the corporate carpetbaggers, it is something much more powerful: thinking citizens willing to spend the time keeping their corporate servants in line.
Chomsky has labored for over fifty years to keep that part of our brain alive that our schools, seeking to train obedient factory workers, have worked so hard to kill. It can be disheartening, to see citizens so freely give up their rights and their powers, but I do believe, that with the The Radical Center: The Future of American Politics (Halstead and Lind), The Cultural Creatives: How 50 Million People Are Changing the World (Rya and Anderson) and other books I have reviewed, there is, without question, a tipping point. The Internet has changed everything-now we need for the people to notice, and act. Chomsky sheds light in a way that no prostituted scholar or preppy business acolyte will respect-but if the workers wish to begin reading for the future salvation of their children's rights, Chomsky is as good a place as any from which to step off into true democracy.

Why is the Atlantic slowly filling with crude petroleum, threatening a millions-of-years-old ecological balance? Why did traders at prominent banks take high-risk gambles with the money entrusted to them by hundreds of thousands of clients around the world, expanding and leveraging their investments to the point that failure led to a global financial crisis that left millions of people jobless and hundreds of cities economically devastated? Why would the world's most powerful military spend ten years fighting an enemy that presents no direct threat to secure resources for corporations? The culprit in all cases is neoliberal ideology—the belief in the supremacy of "free" markets to drive and govern human affairs. And in the years since the initial publication of Noam Chomsky's Profit Over People: Neoliberalism and Global Order, the bitter vines of neoliberalism have only twisted themselves further into the world economy, obliterating the public's voice in public affairs and substituting the bottom line in place of people's basic obligation to care for one another as ends in themselves. In Profit Over People, Chomsky reveals the roots of the present crisis, tracing the history of neoliberalism through an incisive analysis of free trade agreements of the 1990s, the World Trade Organization, and the International Monetary Fund—and describes the movements of resistance to the increasing interference by the private sector in global affairs. In the years since the initial publication of Profit Over People, the stakes have only risen. Now more than ever, Profit Over People is one of the key texts explaining how the crisis facing us operates—and how, through Chomsky's analysis of resistance, we may find an escape from the closing net.

Horatio Alger Huntington-Ackerman is a billionaire living in a huge mansion with his wife Mousey, and his son Sandy, isolated from the real world. Horatio's two brothers, Bart, and Bernie are jealous of Horatio's fortune. They know that if they could wipe out his family, and his butler, Bently, the fortune would be theirs. Bart and Bernie come to the mansion for their monthly dinner with a birthday cake. Everyone except Sandy, and Bently eat some of the cake. The next day, Sandy wakes up to find that everyone, including his pet chicken, was in a coma. Sandy and Bently do some research, and discover that the cake Bart and Bernie brought was poisoned. The only problem is, Bently disposed of the cake before they could get evidence to the police. Now Sandy and Bently will have to find proof that his uncles poisoned his parents, and try to survive their other attempts to kill them too.
This is a hilarious book dealing with family rivalries. I recommend this book to readers from 9-14. This book is well written and has a good plot!

Sandy Huntington-Ackerman didn't expect life to be a free ride (even though his parents are multimillionaires). He certainly didn't expect his two money-grubbing uncles to try to kill his family with a drugged birthday cake. Luckily for Sandy, the cake only sends his parents (and their pet chicken, Attila) into a coma. Along with a loyal butler and a wacky nurse from the asylum next door, Sandy is determined to bring the scoundrels to justice-if he's not the next to go!This "rollicking screwball-comedy of a story" (The Horn Book) is just right for fans of Holes and The Westing Game.

Gateways to the Otherworld: The Secrets Beyond the Final Journey, from the Egyptian Underworld to the Gates in the Sky
Average Reviews:

We've all wondered if there really is life after death. We've all wondered if there is life that we can't see, souls among us that are not visible to our eyes but felt in our heart.
This book examines these and other subjects. It examines ESP. It looks at the Pryamids. But what I found most fascinating was that the book makes the argument that ancient man was much more aware and attuned to the world than we heretofore believed. They knew "their place in the universe."
The book looks into many mysterious issues that people from the beginning have wondered about.
The book is easy to read and well structured. It provides what could be considered a good deal of evidence.
Whether you end out believing or not, this book is well worth reading.
Highly recommended.

Is there life after death? Is there a world outside our own?Mankind has wrestled with these profound questions for as long as there has been consciouness. Gateways to the Otherworld reveals that ancient man already knew the answers.Acclaimed author Philip Gardiner proves that our ancestors were far more advanced--scientifically and spiritually--than previously believed. Through a special technique, ancient Egyptians and others were able to journey to other realities within themselves--in short, to the Otherworld. The author undergoes his own experiments to prove the point.Gardiner makes us consider the fact that ancient man also knew more about his place in the universe than previously thought. He placed buildings and objects in specific places around the globe. Why? Because at these points he had discovered areas where lines of energy cross--points with distinct relation to the universal and human wave resonance of electromagnetism. When man journeyed to these places, he was joining with God and visualising the effect. The remarkable conclusions and discoveries in this book not only dispel some age-old myths, but also address questions such as:*Is there a universal frequency that allows the mind to travel into other realms? *How does this relate to the holographic universe and the concept of quantum entanglement?*Does the Great Pyramid hold a real secret to the quantum realm?*What are those mysterious round towers found scattered around our planet?*Is there an answer to the phenomena of earth energies?*What is the truth behind the Crystal Skulls and the rods of power? *Is ESP real? What Gateways to the Otherworld uncovers are not just tales of ancient trips to other realms, nor theories on why stone circles were built in specific locations, but real answers based on thorough research and science.
