The Boxer's Heart: Lessons from the Ring Review

I myself am a female boxer. It not only taught me things my trainer never did but also helped keep me going everytime a guy at the gym laughed at me or did something like tell me to get out of the ring when sparring. Very few people can make it in the sport of boxing especially women and I was so relieved to find out I'm not the only girl out there going through or who went through the pain, thrill, excitement, and struggle into the male dominated world of boxing.

The Boxer's Heart is a brilliantly candid memoir and the first-ever guide to the world of women's boxing. Written by Food and Wine editor Kate Sekules, it tells the story of how an average athlete converted her visceral dislike of violence into a short but eventful career as a professional boxer makes irresistible reading for both fans and foes of what used to be "The Manly Art." Sekules's account unfolds with the pace and depth of a great novel, crammed with larger-than-life characters and piercing observations. Any woman who has grappled with anger and trust, been nagged by insecurity at the gym, or wondered what it feels like to throw a punch will identify with this witty and honest account of the "sweet science of bruising." "It's a knockout, folks..... The Boxer's Heart is a winner, on all cards."—Newsweek " Sekules ... is appealingly self-aware ... [and] gives us a sense of women's boxing as a thriving movement."—New York Times Book Review "Floats like a butterfly, stings like a bee."—Kirkus Reviews

What a good idea - quotes specifically for martial artists. Although not all the quotes in this book come from martial artists there are a lot of quotes from Musashi, Ueshiba, Bruce Lee etc. There are also a ton from sports, military etc.
I particularly liked the sections on leadership and humor.
I really enjoyed reading through this book, I'm sure I'll go back to it time to time to find a quote or two.

Be Like Water: Practical Wisdom from the Martial Arts

This is another one of those "It does what it says on the label" type books. You'll not want to put it down once you've started.
The book is arranged into many small one to three page chapters about a subject e.g. "Pacing Yourself" or "Identifying Your Priorities", then followed by a page or two on Meditations about how you might achieve what has been discussed then one page of "Resolutions" on suggested promises you should make to yourself to carry out the task at hand.
Written in a nice easy flowing & interesting manner which urges you on to want to just read one more chapter before you put it down.
Although the topics discussed immediately relate to Budo (Martial Arts), all of them can equally be applied to everyday living without little or any adaptation.

This is a great book to keep in the bathroom, no pun intended. This book is loaded with quotes from the Late Mr. Parker. The quotes will keep your mind involved as you put into action what the book is teaching.

The "Zen of Kenpo" is an insightful and interesting volume of analytical, tactical, and philosophical quotes from the teachings and writings of the Senior Grandmaster of American Kenpo, Ed Parker Sr. Having learned early in life the folly of not recording his thoughts on paper or audio tape. Whether at home, at a restaurant, in a hotel or traveling on an airplane, he continually recorded more and more of his thoughts and ideas. Mr. Parker's insights and ideas cover a broad range of subjects relating to the Martial Arts--Combat Wisdom, Patience, Philosophy and Zen. Intended to supplement his previous works, he hoped to give interested parties a deeper understanding of the intricacies of Kenpo--not only as an art, but also as a way of life.Mr. Parker observed and came tounderstand that like analogies and short stories, the imagery evoked through sayings, breathes life into technical descriptions and principles of KENPO. Feeling that this volume of his quotes would encourage open minded students to view technical descriptions and principles of Kenpo in the light of their own experiences, he felt his sayings would add to a person's overall depth of knowledge.
