(More customer reviews)Walter Harding was one of the greatest Thoreau scholars. His annotations include explanations of puns I hadn't understood, sources of quotes and references in the text, and information about Thoreau's time. I also learned that one of my favorite places in Concord was referred to by Thoreau as Fairyland Pond.
The book also includes a map of the area in Thoreau's time, reproductions of HDT's manuscript pages, drawings and excerpts from his journal, and his map of Walden Pond with water depths he determined.
I wouldn't say the book is perfect--there are still a few obscure references without notes, and some notes for points that are obvious--but it's as close as anyone is likely to come.
Be sure to also read Harding's The Days of Henry Thoreau, a great biography.

Panentheism: The Other God of the Philosophers--From Plato to the Present Review

(More customer reviews)This is easily the finest work to-date concerning panentheism, its philosophical roots (and amazing pedigree, though often missed), and its appropriation into numerous Christian theologies over the past hundred years. I have no doubt that Cooper's work will become a staple volume on the bookshelves of specialists in Theology Proper and that his efforts will be drawn upon for years to come. This is the best addition to my own theological library in a long time. Though Cooper is a theological classicalist (and Reformed), he is entirely fair and thorough with the many works and ideas of the panentheists. Panentheists themselves will find the notable architects and differing versions of the view fairly and thoroughly presented. Toward the end, Cooper offers some concluding, though relatively brief, thoughts concerning why he rejects the panentheistic construct. His diligent work and perspicacious style are to be highly commended. My only regret is that the work was not released while I was engaged in doctoral work concerning 'open theism' and its quasi panentheistic substrata!

(More customer reviews)While this is a helpful collection of Thoreau's thoughts, it should be pointed out that the claim by Midwest Book Reviews is a little off base. The book, Thoughts of Thoreau, by Edwin Way Teale was published and then re-issued several years ago. It is the single best collection of Thoreau quotes to date. They are arranged by a long list of categories that the reader finds most user friendly. Not to take away from the book in question, this is only submitted to set the record straight.Tom Potter

This book claims to have a 'collection of over 3000 quotes.' Seeing its daunting size, there is little doubt to the accuracy of that statement. While mostly about love, the quotes vary in genre from 'Wrinkles' to 'Safe Sex,' from 'Gossip' to 'Lingerie.' The quotes have a vast range of emotion behind them... humor, spite, truth, and independence included. Examples include: "I am tired of all this nonsense of beauty being only skin deep. That's deep enough. What do you want- an adorable pancreas?" (Jean Kerr, page 32) "At the touch of love everyone becomes a poet." (Plato, page 248) "Let him kiss me with the kisses of his mouth/For thy love is better than wine." (Song of Songs, page (212) There are a variety of authors, as the book says, though it tends mostly to have many lines from the 1800's-early 1900s. For anyone who loves romance (or lack thereof) and quotes, this book is definately a good buy.

Romantic Shakespeare: Quotes from the Bard on Love and Lovers Review

(More customer reviews)I bought this book mainly because my girlfriend loves it when I quote Shakespeare and I was running a bit dry on material. It has tons of quotes, even from some of his stories (read: not plays) and some of the plays you wouldn't necessarily percieve as being romantic i.e. Othello, King Henry et all.) It also has all of his sonnets. Great buy, but not for those uninterested in love (it's an inspiration thing)
