Valentino Speaks: The Wisdom of Rudolph Valentino; Cues and Views from the Other Side Review

Valentino Speaks: The Wisdom of Rudolph Valentino; Cues and Views from the Other Side

Of all the things we knew Rudolph Valentino to be, spiritual teacher was not one of them. Nonetheless, he apparently has a great deal of value to offer in this role. Of course, being, well, dead, how do we get hold of what he's got to tell us? Enter Wayne Hatford, gifted channel and similarly gifted writer, who breathes life into Valentino's offerings to us.
This is a fascinating read, and you can almost feel Rudy looking over your shoulder thanks to Hatford's efforts.
Valentino Speaks was obviously a labor of love, and one that enriches us all.
Bravo, I say, Bravo.

Falling Upward: A Spirituality for the Two Halves of Life Review

Falling Upward: A Spirituality for the Two Halves of Life

This is the sort of book that you want to give to all of your family members who have reached the age of 45.
The author captures the way Western society works, with its focus on the first half of people's lives. This percipient sociological analysis is just a starting point for his exploration of the second half of life.
As an aside, our obsession on the first half of life is growing stronger -- we care about courtship, career choice, finding a mate, establishing ourselves, and this is the subject that too many 60 year old people worry at, fantasize over, concentrate on, well past the day that they should let this half of their lives go... and think about the second half.
In this second half, people know they will suffer, that they will enter the "shadowlands", that this part of life can be about suffering and diminution. This author outlines how this half of life can be about joy, about falling upward in a spiritual sense, about the second half of life being about opening yourself. A book like this can help center a reader on the need to get past embarrassment, get past a concern for the material, and begin to understand what faces you, and what you are...
There is God in this book, and the book is frank about being a guidebook, a road map, towards salvation. That is inherent in the entire theme, the idea that a second half of life, with travails, can open to something more.
So many people I know are concerned with retirement, but not what to do in retirement, about a lake home, but not a better self... There is a sense that an obsession with retirement, in this second half, will then relegate health problems, money problems, pain, the death of friends.. into painful shocks. This book tells you that these painful days can be something more, a new journey.
Well written, with a gentle, funny, and open style, this is a book that actually can change your life.

A Calendar of Wisdom: Daily Thoughts to Nourish the Soul, Written and Selected from the World's Sacred Texts Review

A Calendar of Wisdom: Daily Thoughts to Nourish the Soul, Written and Selected from the World's Sacred Texts

One of my favorites! I have a daily process, which includes morning reading of several great works. It didn't take long for this book to rise to the top. Tolstoy has done a great service to mankind through his collection of great insights and wisdom. Nicely translated by Peter Sekirin, this book is a treasure awaiting discovery! Tolstoy put a tremendous effort into his concept of "A wise thought for every day of the year, from the great philosophers of all times and all people." It took him over fifteen years of searching to compile this final version of which Tolstoy himself would consult daily for the rest of his life. Wisdom from the likes of Epictetus, Marcus Aurelius, Lao-Tzu, Buddha, Pascal, Jesus, Confucius, Emerson, Kant, Ruskin, Seneca, Socrates, Thoreau and many more. Tolstoy's love and passion for his work shines through as he writes in his introduction..."I hope that the readers of this book may experience the same benevolent and elevating feeling which I have experienced when I was working on it's creation, and which I experience again and again when I reread it every day, working on the enlargement and improvement of the previous edition." I am sure that this book will be one of your all time favorites too!

Black Pearls has proven to brighten my day when I read it first thing in the morning. Sometimes it's the quotations, other times, it's the tasks that are laid out, or even the commentary that helps me through the day. It's something that I can read over and over again..

Relationships. They aren't easy and good ones don't just happen. If you want a good, strong relationship with someone, you have to work at it. You have to make a commitment. The more we invest in a relationship with another who cares for us, the better it will be. And the same goes with God. If we truly want a good, strong relationship where we can solely rely on God, we must make a commitment and work at it.
Joyce Meyer's Hearing from God Each Morning--365 Daily Devotions can help you strengthen your relationship with God through her daily meditations. This guide serves as a reminder to what is really important and to be able to recognize God's voice through all the noise of the world.
The readings are short and begin with a biblical quote followed by a short essay by Joyce. It ends with God's Word for You Today. I found these daily readings to be insightful and powerful. They applied to everyday life and reminded me where my focus needed to be at. Joyce writes in a down-to-earth clear cut manner, and really drives her point home. The readings are inspirational and positive. They really encourage you to grasp God's message and do His works.
I have many daily devotionals and usually find I read a few pages and the book gets pushed by the wayside. This one, however, will not. I was eager to read the next pages and will continue to reread this book. This devotional made me think more about my relationship with God and listen more closely to his Word.
This is a great book for yourself and would also make a wonderful gift.
Note: I received a copy of this book from Hachette Book Group for review purposes. The opinions in this review are honest and my own.

In the hustle and bustle of today's busy world, sometimes it's hard enough to hear yourself think, much less take a minute to stop and listen for the voice of God. But learning to recognize God's voice and the many ways in which He speaks is vital for following His plan. This devotional; drawing from How to Hear From God, Knowing God Intimately, and The Power OfSimple Prayer shows the reader through a daily reminder, how God speaks through their own thoughts and feelings, their dreams, and the words of other people. Joyce Meyer reveals the ways in which God delivers His word and the benefits of asking God for the sensitivity to hear His voice. Joyce asks the question, "Are you listening?" and shares how to do just that...on a daily basis. Download the free Joyce Meyer author app.
