I LOVE baseball...it's history and the characters that have come along with the sport. This book is a GREAT collection of quotes from all aspects of baseball...players, owners, umpires, legends.....you will just chuckle thru much of this book. I like to include baseball words of wisdom in my emails, at baseball gatherings, on my business cards...and this book gives me a great list to choose from. Great for baseball trivia games with fellow baseball fanatics. It is the most comprehensive collection I have ever seen in print. A MUST read!!

Here's what former Chicago White Sox owner Bill Veeck had to say about baseball: "This is a game to be savored, not gulped. There's time to discuss everything between pitches or between innings." That's just one of the thousands of quotes gathered in this gigantic collection, and they include some of the wisest, wittiest comments made on America's national pastime. Edited by Wayne Stewart, a sports writer with almost 30 years of experience and 20 books to his name, and with a Foreword by Roger Kahn, who wrote the seminal book on baseball, The Boys of Summer, this anthology includes observations from players, managers, owners, writers, fans, and more. Among the greats whose thoughts are here to savor: Hank Aaron, Satchel Paige, Babe Ruth, Sandy Koufax, Willie Mays, Derek Jeter, Don Zimmer, Roger Angell, Red Barber, George Will, and countless others. This is a great gift book for any baseball fan!

Harvey Penick's Little Red Book: Lessons and Teachings from a Lifetime in Golf Review

Harvey Penick's Little Red Book: Lessons and Teachings from a Lifetime in Golf

Ben Crenshaw doubled over and openly wept after holing out to win the 1995 Masters tournament. His golf teacher, friend, and father figure Harvey Penick had passed away shortly before the tourney. Ben felt that Harvey was `guiding' him in the final rounds, and the emotions finally overtook him. The impact of the moment was very touching, but it wasn't until I finished Harvey's Little Red book that I began to understand the poignancy of the connection. The 90-year-old Penick had taught Ben since Ben was 7. The little red book of the title is the notebook, journal, and freeform diary of Mr. Penick. Compiled from golf observations throughout his life, it was only in his waning years that he agreed to allow anyone to see it. What a treat and a privilege it was to read. This is a wonderful piece of literature. Having recently completed Hogan and Armour's instructional guides, this was an excellent follow up. Not nearly as meticulously mechanical and cold as Hogan, nor as blandly wandering as Armour, Penick's actual instruction is extremely straightforward in its scope. I also think that the longer one has played golf the greater one appreciates this work. Not written strictly for the beginner, as the other two books are, Harvey comments not only on instruction and mechanics, but also course design, tournaments, hustlers, metaphorical imagery, and caddying in the early part of the century. Throughout the book, his love of teaching and his immense pride in his pupils continues to carry the theme, allowing one to understand the connection he had with his students. Having become extremely weary of the cloying media and corporate anointment of T. Woods, reading about golf as seen through Harvey Penick's eyes was a much-needed tonic. Highly recommended.

The Life You Imagine: Life Lessons for Achieving Your Dreams Review

The Life You Imagine: Life Lessons for Achieving Your Dreams

A true inspirational and motivational book. Once I began reading, I found it difficult to put down. A true tribute to how determination, dedication, love, support and a positive attitude can help anyone achieve whatever dreams they desire. Derek Jeter's journey from a childhood dream to the steps and scarifices he took in accomplishing his goal is a life lesson for anyone, whether you're 9 or 99. An intimate look at his family, his thoughts, his fears, his struggles, his triumphs...I found myself laughing, crying and reflecting on my own life as I related his experiences to my own. This book teaches you about Derek Jeter, but mostly, it teaches you about life. A+++++

Playing for Keeps: Michael Jordan and the World He Made Review

Playing for Keeps: Michael Jordan and the World He Made
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Especially in the early (pre-NBA) portion, this book shines. There are excellent stories about Jordan's singular desire and drive to win, absorb coaching, learn, and improve. And as any reader should expect from David Halberstam, it is literate, readable, and free of vapid gush.
It would be hard to read this book and not come away impressed at Jordan's willingness to push himself to do anything legal to be the best and to win.
What didn't I like about the book? There was no index and no footnotes. Much of it was derivative (I'd read The Jordan Rules and A March to Madness and recognized the portions pulled from them). This book sheds no light on Jordan's off-the-court life. It's not strictly chronological, making it confusing to follow at times. And Jordan's change from a wide-eyed and approachable young man to a sophisticated and more aloof man of the world, a worthy story in itself, just happens all of a sudden.
I'd still give the book four stars. The pre-NBA portion is in the same league with the excellent current Lombardi biography (When Pride Still Mattered), and the rest of the book, though flawed, is strong enough to merit the rating.

Geektionary: From Anime to Zettabyte, An A to Z Guide to All Things Geek Review

Geektionary: From Anime to Zettabyte, An A to Z Guide to All Things Geek
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I consider myself a geek. I play Dungeons & Dragons, World of Warcraft, and read comics when I can. I also work in IT, which lends itself to geek culture. I do not live in my mom's basement - and I am not "forever alone" as I have a wife and kid.
I purchased this book because of the recent popularity of geek culture. Geek culture is everywhere now. I feel the idea of an all-encompassing book on geek culture as a whole is an interesting idea. Everyone is a geek these days. I don't mind - I love that the San Diego Comic-Con and movies like The Dark Knight are mainstream. I love that everyone can use an iPhone and Facebook.

While this book does not completely encompass geek culture, it comes close. It does not contain every single subject matter/person/word related to anything geek - it contains subject matters that are interesting. For example, it does not include every comic book character ever created - but it does have the important ones, and some obscure and humorous ones - such as Arm Fall Off Boy.

Although the book contains the must-know information for geek culture - the authors, in many instances, have chosen interesting subject matters over the obvious subject matters - for example, Scott McCloud and his theories on comics are discussed, whereas a comprehensive guide to, say, Spider-man should be found in a more focused source - because everyone knows about Spider-man! The book includes Spider-Man, and The Force - which will be useful to non-geeks - but for me, I need the nitty gritty. It also includes many modern memes and relevant information related to present day geekery, as well as past topics such as 80's cartoons like Thundercats, to early geek periods of D&D, Adam West's Batman, Pong, and information relating to historical geek subjects, such as H.P. Lovecraft.

The book contains interesting topics such as:
-Fictional board games in Science Fiction, such as Star Trek
-History of the High Score in Video Games
-The founder of Apple computers you may not have heard of
-Shout-outs to some of my favorite shows/movies: Dexter, Sopranos, The Wire, Breaking Bad, Alien, Battle Royale, The Big Lebowski
-Insight into Anime/Manga - I now know how hardcore anime/manga fans are
-World Superhero Registry - a real-life superhero organization
-For those that enjoy hard sci-fi - there are many Niven/Asimov references.
-My favorite sections were the science/computer section and the games section (RPG's, board Games, Video game dynamics). The insights are not necessarily surface level, but more deep such as "Instance Dungeon," pro methods for solving a Rubik's Cube, and Thac0.

Basically - this book is comprehensive. That is just a small sample of the information contained in these pages. I wrote this review because I appreciate geek culture and feel that this book comes very close to including just about every obscure topic a geek could love. And with each subject, there is interesting information presented as well as actually very funny comments/quizzes/usage/and other sidebars. This book is funny. It is not written like a humorless textbook. Also, the humor is not always necessarily what I would call "mainstream" - it is off-kilter, sometimes quirky- which is more enjoyable to me, and I feel to geeks. Let's just say it is more Conan O'brien than Jay Leno. This book is light-hearted and not meant to be all-encompassing (it doesn't include the entire lineage of Bilbo Baggins or anything like that - if you want that, read LOTR), or too technical ( it is not a book full of programming terms or text-lingo like LOL), but it covers and compiles a broad range of fascinating, true geek material from an extensive range of subject matters. Yes, it does have zombies.

This book will join books such as Feast of Crows, The Onion's Our Front Pages, and Infinite Jest in my extensive and distinguished bathroom libary.

Wooden: A Lifetime of Observations and Reflections on and Off the Court Review

Wooden: A Lifetime of Observations and Reflections on and Off the Court
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Listen to anyone who speaks about him, or read anything that anyone writes about him, and you will instantly know that John Wooden is truly a national treasure. This book of Wooden's wisdom and life philosophies is definitely on my short list of the best books of all time about character and leadership.
This book is a collection of the simple and direct beliefs and observations of John Wooden, arguably the best (college) basketball coach of all time. Interestingly, very little of what Wooden wants to teach is about basketball. His quick stories, short vignettes, and detailed memories focus on life and relationships with others.
Coach Wooden is a gentle man with the courage and discipline to live his life according to his deepest held ideals, values, and principles. Despite his teams' unbelievable success (10 NCAA national basketball championships in 12 years (including 7 in a row!), 88 consecutive victories, and 38 straight NCAA tournament victories), and his own fame (many coach-of-the-year honors, "Sports Illustrated's" sportsman of the year, a lifetime winning percentage of over 80%, and the first man to be elected to college basketball's hall of fame as both a player (3-time All-American at Purdue) and coach), he resisted the public pressures and temptations to stay true to himself and his beliefs.
Coach Wooden defines success as the "peace of mind that is a direct result of self-satisfaction in knowing you did your best to become the best you are capable of becoming." The book finishes with 30 pages devoted to Wooden's legendary "Pyramid of Success" and another 5 pages of his favorite sayings - 35 priceless pages in a priceless book.
At a time when America is re-defining and searching for true heroes to lead us forward from our darkest days, this book is a beacon of hope and guidance and should serve as a blueprint for making heroes of us all.

The Story Behind the Glory: Winning Quotes from Sports Greats on the Game of Life Review

The Story Behind the Glory: Winning Quotes from Sports Greats on the Game of Life
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Behind every great sportsman is a system of values: hard work, self-improvement, service to his community. Those values help drive an athlete (or a coach, or even a sportswriter) to greatness, and the distillation of those values are reflected in a person's outlook, and in his words.
Bill Cairo has assembled the famous quotations from eleven sports greats, athletes who excelled at everything from golf, football, and baseball to coaching, teaching, and jotting purple poetry about the ups and downs of teams and their fortunes on the field of play. But this is not simply a book of quotations; if it were, Cairo coul have written the chapters about Yogi Berra and Mohammed Ali and called it a day. SportsWise also conveys the biographies of the sports figures included on its "Top Ten"-style listing, allowing the reader a fuller understanding of what the book's subtitle calls "The Story Behind the Glory."
Cairo clearly understands the different sporting disciplines he's writing about, but the reader needn't be a pro himself to enjoy SportsWise. In order to be thrilled and moved by this book, all you need to do is turn the pages and read.

A different collection of sports quotations, The Story Behind the Glory offers hundreds of memorable quotations and the backgrounds of the men who said them. America's greatest athletes, coaches and writers (Aaron, Ali, Ashe, Berra, Lombardi, Rice, Rickey, Robinson, Trevino, Shero, and Wooden) had much to say not only about sports but the greater game of life. Also included is plenty of sports history and trivia, making for a perfect trifecta of a sports book.
