Darkest Fear (A Myron Bolitar Novel) Review

Darkest Fear (A Myron Bolitar Novel)

At the end of this novel, Harlan Coben says: "This book is a work of fiction. That means I make stuff up." For the first time, I disagree with him. I have read every one of his seven novels, and he doesn't just make things up - he uses his magic pen to pull rabbits out of hats, Aces from his sleeve, bouquets and doves out of and back to nowhere, and a few ropes tricks for good measure. He is a Master Magician---never ceasing to surprise and amaze--a grand mixture of tears and laughter, suspense and release, yet provocative and insightful.
This review does not concern what the book is about, but is rather ABOUT THE BOOK. It is a roller coaster ride - Harlan takes you up the slow grade to the top of the rise and sends you hurtling down full speed; around curves, over the top, through the loops and then starts the long slow climb again. Hang on!! His characters are perfection: Myron Bolitar: hard as nails yet soft as a marshmallow - intuitive, intelligent, analytical, sweet and loving, cute and cuddly, human and feeling - you name it: that's Myron-- but don't underestimate him, that mind of his never stops working. Esperanza: Myron's sidekick, friend, advisor - beautiful, intelligent and ever faithful! Windsor Lock-Horne the Third: A devoted friend, almost unfeeling, cold and calculating in every way except where Myron and Esperanza are concerned. Aptly named - you really wouldn't want to lock horns with him!!! The quick wit and spontaneous interaction of these three will keep you reeling as Harlan spins his web of intrigue and mystery. But read his books and see for yourself.
According to his answer to my e-mail, this talented author will be giving Myron and Company a rest for a "coupla years" (but he assures me they will return!) In the meantime he is at work on a 'stand-alone" novel called TELL NO ONE, with a new cast of characters. My advice is to start with his first novel and watch the characters grow right before your eyes(so to speak. And wait till you meet BigCyndi! But that's another story!Enjoy as you have never enjoyed before...I did.
My hope is that Harlan Coben keeps "making stuff up" because it sure is the right stuff.

Song and Circumstance: The Work of David Byrne from Talking Heads to the Present Review

Song and Circumstance: The Work of David Byrne from Talking Heads to the Present

Sytze Steenstra (an arts and social science professor from the Netherlands) has written an impressive book covering the art (mostly music, but by no means exclusively) of David Byrne. The book follows a roughly chronological path, but connects each section/part/era to conceptual themes. You need to be willing to put up with a little bit of academic theory and structure with those themes, but do realize that Byrne doesn't seem to shy from those theory labels, so there's some level of tacit approval. (In fact, the review of the book by Byrne himself shows up above on the amazon description of the book.) This is a look primarily at Byrne through the works of the Talking Heads, his films, solo music, visual art, and collaborations, so it is not strictly a biographer, least of all a "rock-n-roll" biography with smashed televisions, pregnant groupies, and piranhas being kept on the tour bus.
Parts four and six, the ethnography and Tropicalismo sections, were the strongest to me, at least in part because I was less familiar with that work. There are strong connections made throughout the book, and you definitely finish reading with a long list of music to track down. I'd highly recommend it to fans of Byrne from any era (Talking Heads on) and to readers of Wire Magazine (the British new music magazine which also has a willingness to use, and lack of fear of, critical theory).

The Art of Quantum Planning: Lessons from Quantum Physics for Breakthrough Strategy, Innovation, and Leadership Review

The Art of Quantum Planning: Lessons from Quantum Physics for Breakthrough Strategy, Innovation, and Leadership
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Quantum Planning is a quantum leap or at least a phase-change in how businesses and institutions need to think about problems that defy traditional logic. By drawing analogies to the "big picture" lessons from modern physics, Harris leads us: beyond the static business plan to the dynamic marketplace of relative customer value; beyond the extremes of rigid definitions to the collaborative space of fluid possibilities; and beyond the cut-throat world of win-lose competition to the win-win dimensions of cooperation.
One doesn't have to be a scientist to appreciate how quantum physics has helped us understand the linkages within a universal energy system; and one doesn't have to be a physicist to appreciate the practical manner in which Harris has adapted these principles to scenario planning and management advice for just about any commercial enterprise or public institution.
It is a short read, but packed with game-changing ideas. I am pleased to recommend it.

If you are a fan of "Stand by Me", pro wrestling and rock'n'roll, then let Steve Crawford take you down memory lane. Crawford talks about a small town in Arkansas that is probably not unlike any other small town in America. This really brought back some childhood memories. The stuff about wrestling in the south was fun also. Check it out!!

Polemics and Prophecies: 1967 - 1970 (Polemics & Prophecies) Review

Polemics and Prophecies: 1967 - 1970 (Polemics and Prophecies)

The Vietnam era is not history to me, it was my life. During those turbulent times, I was not aware of I. F. Stone - I had never heard of him. He was a "radical" journalist. In reading about the famous journalist Walter Lippmann it was interesting to discover that this famous and influential journalist was wrong as often as he was right. In this book by I.F. Stone, this not so famous radical journalist, was right on every suspicion, accusation, and premise. It is hard to believe. And here I am providing the first review of this book. I have decided that I must read more books by Mr. Stone.
As in this day and age there are many unsung heroes like William Greider who have been writing books for years telling America what would happen if they kept on the same path. My guess is that Mr. Greider like I.F. Stone will never be recognized as a hero of truth, justice and the American way. They just write their books and then disappear. It is a shame. I am going to try and read as many books by I.F. Stone as I can find. I have the feeling that I will be a lot closer to realizing a true history of the American past when I finish.
I am also wondering about the legacy of John Kennith Galbraith. I have read five or six of his books and he is the economist that should have been listened to - and he didn't win a Nobel Prize.
Books written by Richard Noble - The Hobo Philosopher:
"Hobo-ing America: A Workingman's Tour of the U.S.A.."
"A Summer with Charlie"
"A Little Something: Poetry and Prose"
"Honor Thy Father and Thy Mother"
"The Eastpointer" Selections from award winning column.

A collection of newspaper columns from the late 1960s in which Stone turns his attention to the most turbulent period of our recent past. This period included the Vietnam War, the Tet offensive and the US intervention in Cambodia.
