The Sky Isn't Visible from Here: Scenes from a Life Review

The Sky Isn't Visible from Here: Scenes from a Life
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
"The Sky Isn't Visible from Here: Scenes from a Life" is a particularly apt title. Felicia Sullivan uses scenes from her childhood mixed together with chapters that follow her adult life through her addiction and into her recovery. In doing so, the book gains depth, as we know some of the "why" behind Felicia's troubles and addiction. We also see her incredible honesty as she bares her life and soul to the readers, displaying to the world her own wrongs and embarrassing times, which many people would bury. Felicia gives us a window into her world, and then pulls us through the window as we are caught between the memories and her current life.
Felicia worked hard to separate herself from her mother (at the time the book was written, she hadn't been in contact for in 11 years), and at first I couldn't grasp why she became an addict. My thoughts are mirrored in the discussions between Felicia and her friends as she is struggling with her own addictions. Felicia is determined not to become like her mother, but the cocaine calls to her:
"you wonder how it is you got to this point. Because you told yourself in your bathroom that first time in December ... with two rolled bills and neatly cut lines that you'd never be an addict like your mother because you survived the war that was her, because you convinced yourself you were stronger than she was. And then, there go the lines."
Felicia follows this quote a page later with a description of her feelings about cocaine. First, she describes it for her friend, and then she completes the description for the reader:
"'It's like Broadway up my nose,' I say.
What I fail to tell Emily is how many times I've tried it since. And although I savored my first glass of red wine and the many that followed, cocaine is different. I like -- no, I love cocaine. I tolerate the nausea, the constant swallowing, the teeth grinding -- anything for that rush when the world seems simple, beautiful, and large enough to fit me in."
When she is on cocaine, Felicia is able to escape "the awkward, stammering girl who never feels smart enough, white enough, pretty enough." After struggling to fit in as a child, first alcohol and then cocaine give her the confidence to change her self-image. The change between shy, bullied child and self-confident writer and executive is so well written and well examed that the reader can truly grasp the impact addiction can have. If you are suddenly feeling a sense of self-worth, how do you give that up?
Felicia bares her soul, giving us a good long look at her life. She chronicles her own fight with addiction and mixes in childhood memories. The Sky Isn't Visible from Here is not an easy read by any means - Felicia's childhood experiences were not like those of the children of addicts I knew, well-fed and sheltered in the suburbs. These are vignettes of a year eating only potatoes, of shielding her eyes so she wouldn't see cockroaches scurrying in the floor in front of her, of seeing her friend's mother unconscious for 36 hours, and of taking her mother to the Emergency Room over and over. I have never read a book that pulled me so far into the real world of addiction; Felicia uses such intense detail when recounting the horrors she survived that I feel as if I was walking in her shoes beside her.
While Felicia has cut off contact with her mother, The Sky Isn't Visible from Here isn't a psychobabble "blame the mother for everything" book. It's an intense look into the dark world of addiction. Readers will walk away from this book with a much deeper understanding of what it is like to be caught in the life of an addict, or caught in an addiction. I highly recommend The Sky Isn't Visible from Here, to everyone, but especially for anyone who knows addicts or those recovering from addiction.

McElligot's Pool (Classic Seuss) Review

McElligot's Pool (Classic Seuss)

~ * ~ * ~ * ~ * ~ * ~
When I was ages 4-7 with constant earaches, and finally needing my tonsils out, this book was the only bribe that would get me to the pediatricians office.( He had a copy in his waiting room)
My kids loved it just as much. Im not sure why it's even more popular than other Dr. Seuss. Perhaps because of the beautifully expanding imaginary depths that the hero imagines lie beneath McElligot's Pool. The delightfully bizarre illustrations of the ever more outrageous fish that might populate this world are mysterious and entrancing. As always, Dr. Seuss is a genius at putting common, and his own invented words together into sentences that sing themselves off the page.
This is a wonderful story for kids 3-7. (Please, don't make them go to the doctor's office to read it) :-)

Reinventing Schools, Reforming Teaching: From Political Visions to Classroom Reality

For anyone familiar with the education scene in the UK, or anyone interest in the vagaries of policy development, this book provides an insightful but cautionary tale. As one who has spent a considerable amount of time observing the effects of British policy development at the school level, I often wondered how so many good ideas could go so wrong. Clearly educational policy has less to do with enhancing the learning of all students and more to do with ensuring the political success of certain individuals and their political parties. This well researched, clearly written narrative of the policy scene in the UK should be compulsory reading for policy developers at all levels in all countries (even Mr. Arne Duncan might learn a thing or two but I doubt it). It reaffirms once again what Michael Fullan wrote some years ago - what is clarity at the top is often clutter down below. The clear message for policy developers is let the teachers in on the game. Unless the people who deliver education buy in, your policy will either be stillborn or experience a slow lingering death.

The American Directory Of Writer's Guidelines: More Than 1,600 Magazine Editors And Book Publishers Explain What They Are Looking For From Freelancers
Average Reviews:

The American Directory of Writer's Guidelines is an excellent companion to Writer's Market and an essential reference book for freelance writers. Some of the included publications do cross-over, but for the most part, their different. And, it's great that a new edition has been released (2006).
The nice thing about The American Directory of Writer's Guidelines is that it provides both contact information and writer's guidelines for the listed publications.
Another thing I like about this reference book is the organization. It has publications organized alphabetically and then has the lists of categories in the back. It's much easier to find publications.
The downside of The American Directory of Writer's Guidelines is that it isn't updated annually. This makes using it a little more difficult because you have to do a cross reference to see if publications still exist, if the contacts still work there, and to make sure the pub hasn't moved. Of course, every query sent should be verified in this way before you send it, so you should be doing these things anyway.

Taylor portrays the dynamics of confusion in large organizations quite
accurately, and has tested his model by forecasting events in the
Balkans. One of those forecasts, that conflict would not end with the
cessation of the US/NATO bombing of Serbia in 1999, seems amply borne
out. I would recommend this book to anyone interested in
understanding the complexities of geopolitics from a fresh perspective.

The Wild World of Sports: Over A Century of Amusing Stories and Quotes Review

The Wild World of Sports: Over A Century of Amusing Stories and Quotes
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
From the Introduction of Mr. Elston's new book:
--"Sports personalities are too often pictured as completely serious competitors, giving their all for the game. While sports naturally involves a very serious attitude, there is also a lighter side which fans are seldom aware.
This book has been compiled from a collection of those brief and pointed anecdotes as well as some of the outstanding short sports stories. Fortunately I had the foresight to begin and maintain a voluminous collection of sports humor over the years from which I have extracted what I feel are the best and most worthy of remembering.
I hope you will find this intriguing collection of sports humor and wit one of the most enjoyable, amusing and refreshing books it will ever be your pleasure to read."--
___________
After reading Mr. Elston's book, it is not only an "intriguing collection of sports humor and wit", it is also a very well researched history lesson packed with historical background information on each subject covered in the book. The book consists of 11 chapters and one epilogue which Gene appropriately titles "Extra Innings - Overtime".
Each chapter deals with a particular topic on sports, for instance, Chapter One is titled "(Jocks) In a World Their Own", Chapter Two titled, "(Coaches) The Sideline Entertainers", Chapter Three, "(Managers) Hired to be Fired", Chapter Four, "The Botton Line) The Big Spenders - Economics 101" and Chapter Five "(The Brass) Egotism At It's Best"....and so on. Of course, each chapter's topic focuses on funny stories and memorable humorous quotes on that particular topic but as I mentioned previously, each chapter also includes indepth historical background on each of the topics which brings to reason why this book is not only also very funny and enjoyable to read, but also very educational, thus anyone who also enjoys reading of the history of any sports topic will also thoroughly enjoy this book.
Here are some examples taken from Chapter One - "(Jocks) In a World of Their Own"
--- "To say the `flakes' or `screwballs' have disappeared from the playing fields and courts in this modern era of sports is not true. What IS true is that there are just fewer of them. But, still a laugher is MORE than a lopsided victory.
There still are many bona fide jocks with the natural wit that sets them apart from many individuals who would like to fit that talented mold, but only find themselves working at it. The NATURAL is determined by an inherent sense that is determined by nature.
Two examples: Pete Gray was a remarkable one-armed outfielder who played for the St.Louis Browns during World War II. One sweltering day, as Gray came off the field after a strenuous game in Chicago, he was stopped by an extremely talkative woman. Caught in a "sticky" situation, Pete tried to remain polite as the woman droned on and on about his handicap. After several uncomfortable moments, dripping with sympathy and sentimentality - to say nothing of the heat - the woman finally gushed, "You poor boy...just how did you lose your arm?" Pete saw his chance, and as he headed for the clubhouse he replied solemnly, "A woman in St.Louis talked it off!"
And, by Bo Belinsky: "Happiness is a first-class pad, good wheels, an understanding manager, and a little action."
Player quotes have a way of bringing the fan directly into the clubhouse or locker room and of helping to recognize the individual personalities of these athletes. Since direct contact is minimal there is no other way to look at these gladiators as every day human beings. It is, of course, not the final summation of their lives, but in most cases satisfies the people who watch daily and would like to get closer to them.
This story will illustrate the perception fans have of Yogi Berra. In his early big league days, pitchers could play on one batting weakness of Berra. It was a cinch to make the Yankees catcher bite on the first pitch, no matter its location.
Once, with Berra about to take his turn at bat, Yankees manager Bucky Harris drew him aside and cautioned: "Now look, Yogi, don't always take your cut at the first one. Wait for a good one and think before you swing. The idea is to think! Now get in there and do what I tell you."
Yogi picked up his bat, pulled down his cap, and took his place in the batter's box. He didn't bite at the first one. The umpire called it a strike. The second one split the plate. Yogi never moved. The third pitch, too, was a sweet one, but Berra watched it pass by.
Berra dragged his bat back to the dugout and dropped it on the pile. He walked over to Harris. "It's your own fault," Yogi said bitterly, "What do you expect? How can a guy think and hit at the same time?" ---
_________From "The Epilogue Extra Innings - Overtime" Gene included this funny story about former major league umpire Charlie Moran:
~"...Charlie Moran who became a major league ump following a successful career of coaching football at Centre College, whose team's nickname was the "Praying Colonels".
One time during an argument with Moran over a decison, Fresco Thompson sneered, 'With you as coach, Moran, no wonder your team prayed!'. Fresco recalls that Moran had the last word, however, when he turned to Thompson, smiled benignly and said,'Young man, since you've turned this conversation into religious channels, suppose you go to the clubhouse and baptize yourself with an early shower!'.
Moran, who was well known as "Uncle Charlie", later was nearing the end of his long and commendable umpiring career when he got into a rhubarb with the Chicago Cubs over a decision. Several Cubs players charged from the dugout toward Moran, seemingly bent on tearing him to pieces in their anger. Charlie Grimm, the Cubs manager, hastened out to break up the commotion. Yet it was Grimm who got the thumb from Moran. Taking a firm stand between the umpire and his players, Grimm warned, "I'll fine the first guy who dares lay a hand on this blind old man!"~
___________
Such, is the great stories and quotes to be found in the latest and third book authored by former major league broadcaster Gene Elston. "The Wild World of Sports" consists of 108 pages, relatively short, as many books go, but in those 108 pages, Mr. Elston packs each page with his humor, wit and wisdom along with his tremendous background of the history of organized sports.

In Chapter Eleven "(The Malaprops) Sometimes They Know Not What they Say", Gene includes many misquotes and mistated comments by broadcasters, players and others. As the king of the malaprops as Gene alludes, Elston dedicates a large portion of this chapter to former co-broadcast partner and friend, the legendary San Diego Padres play-by-play announcer Jerry Coleman. So, I'll end this review on a quote from Mr. Coleman from page 97 of Mr. Elston's book:
~"There's someone warming up in the bullpen but he's obscured by his number." ~

ADVERSARIES OF DANCE: FROM THE PURITANS TO THE PRESENT Review

ADVERSARIES OF DANCE: FROM THE PURITANS TO THE PRESENT
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is a particularly well-researched and comprehensive examination of opposition to dancing, especially by religious leaders and theologians, since before the Puritans. My background is in Renaissance dance, so I can't attest to the book's accuracy regarding the later periods, but the initial chapters on early antidance views are excellent. Sometimes Wagner fails to distinguish between Puritan and more mainstream Protestant reformers, but otherwise she provides an impressively thorough overview of antidance treatises and their arguments. This book is also pioneering in its scope; it examines common themes shared by antidance writers over four centuries and on two continents, and demonstrates how many later dance opponents borrowed heavily from their antidance predecessors.

Restoring Nature: Perpectives from the Social Sciences and Humanities Review

Restoring Nature: Perpectives from the Social Sciences and Humanities
Average Reviews:

While ecological restoration is undeniably a valuable part of the growing "new" conservation movement, many of its adherents have been somewhat reluctant to look at the social side of their work. This book does a nice job of that. Several of the authors' contributions provide unique views of activities that many of us in the conservation movement take for granted. The editors' pieces (Gobster and Hull) are excellent and thought provoking. The philosophical works in the volume, though wordy and, at times, unnecessarily academic, are useful discussions of arguments we have been debating for years. Finally, a chapter by Dr. Helford, while a nice bit of ethnographic writing, just plain pissed me off, but I can't help to think he is on to something and may be right. I just am not ready to accept his ideas. I think that reaction sumarizes my feelings about the book. Maybe we in the conservation and restoration movements aren't ready for what some of these people in this volume are telling us. If you consider yourself an ecological restorationist or just a conservationist, you owe it to yourself and to these authors to read this book.

It makes sense to approach business relationships as a partnership to make sure that both sides come away from the experience in a positive light, but how many times have you been involved in something the gets competitive and turns into a game of who can get the most out of the other guy. That is what this book is about. The authors premises is that in today's competitive and global environment with all the price pressures that there are, it is going to be relationships that are more important then squeezing that last 1 % out of your vendors.
Sure this sounds like some sort of play nice book written by a non business professional that really does not know what it is like. That perception is incorrect. The author was the Vice Chairman of the Chrysler Corporation and practiced what he is laying out in the book. Overall he gives any number of examples of how win - win relationships help you out in the long run. He is a very persuasive author and his premises is helped out by the fact that deep down most if us know that he is correct. We all like working with people that make things easy and are treating us fairly and we all dislike the pain associated with dealing with a firm that you know will stick it to you unless you are on top of them.
Overall I enjoyed the book. The author writes in a very easy to read and positive manner. The book reads at a fast pace and is full of insightful points. It is the kind of book that you wish all business professionals could read and put in practice. Not only does the book spell out a better way to do business, but it is the way to stay in business.

The book contains good advice for it's purposes. Unfortunately, it's purposes seem twofold: 1. Encourage young officers to punch out of the service as early as possible 2. Encourage them to sign on as a client of Begley's recruiting company
In that regard, I though Mr. Begley should be giving this book away because it's clearly a marketing tool for his recruiting business. I think I paid too much to read 200 pages of sales pitch.

The purpose of this book is to provide guidance to today's military leader. What the reader will find here is not the conventional pap passed on through "authorized channels." Indeed, to most dull minded, head in the sand martinets, a lot of what is presented will be regarded as heresy. Most offended individuals are not even aware that they have been beguiled by an outdated system. Regrettably such individuals are misguided and live in a dream world. From Ranks to Riches tells the reader what life is like today. At the very onset it is important to understand that the Military Leader is quite different from the civilian counterpart. He or she was identified, usually at an early age, as possessing an above average ability to lead people. From that time forward the future leader chose and was exposed to teaching and training in the art of leadership. Whether the leader was trained by the Army, the Air Force or the Navy is relatively unimportant. Each Service has its nuances, but all leadership -- and management -- training is essentially the same. Certain individuals seem to have been born with unusual leadership abilities. Others will never be successful leaders, no matter how much they are taught or trained. However, the majority of individuals trained as military leaders have developed a significant talent for management. This talent is applicable in civil life as well as in Service. To the military leader the ability to effectively transfer this leadership talent to the civilian community often appears daunting. It should not be so. They should have more faith in themselves. They will succeed, eventually. In the long run of life, class will tell. The results of studying this book will not make the difference between ultimate success or failure. What the reader will gain by reading the pages of this book is a knowledge of how to pursue a more rewarding career as a leader and how to make the transition to industry more effectively. The interviewing techniques, the insight into reading people, motivating methods and the emphasis on focusing efforts is just as applicable in the military as in civil life. The choice of career paths is up to the individual. The alternative to applying the principles presented here is to wait for innate capabilities and experience to show the way. By following the suggestions offered in From Ranks to Riches both the career service member and the transitioning leader will be able to attain success sooner and enjoy the fruits of that success longer.

From Autos to Architecture: Fordism and Architectural Aesthetics in The Twentieth Century Review

From Autos to Architecture: Fordism and Architectural Aesthetics in The Twentieth Century
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
From Autos to Architecture: Fordism and Architectural Aesthetics in the 20th Century comes from a sociologist who provides a social history linking Fordist mass production and industrial architecture in America to European designer developments. It crosses disciplines from art and architecture to economics and world history to provide a scholarly survey of architecture and social conflicts, and is a pick for any college-level arts or social history collection.

Click Here to see more reviews about: From Autos to Architecture: Fordism and Architectural Aesthetics in The Twentieth Century

One of the most interesting questions in architectural history is why modern architecture emerged from the war-ravaged regions of central Europe and not the United States, whose techniques of mass production and mechanical products so inspired the first generation of modern architects like Le Corbusier, Mies van der Rohe, and Walter Gropius. In From Autos to Architecture, historian David Gartman offers a critical social history that shows how Fordist mass production and industrial architecture in America influenced European designers to an extent previously not understood. Drawing on Marxist economics, the Frankfurt School, and French sociologist Pierre Bourdieu, From Autos to Architecture deftly illustrates the different class structures and struggles of America and Europe. Examining architecture in the context of social conflicts, From Autos to Architecture offers a critical alternative to standard architectural histories focused on aesthetics alone.
