I had a preaching professor in seminary who said if you get one good illustration out of an illustration book, you got your money's worth. Okay, so I got my money's worth out of this book, but not much more. It suffers from several problems. Let's review them.
Many of the illustrations are directly from Tony's life, and as such are pretty soggy and not really transferable. How many congregations want to hear a pastor repeatedly say, "A funny thing happened to Tony Evans awhile back..."
For instance, he tells a story about going to Tennessee for a speaking engagement. The flight was delayed, and when he landed, he had an hour drive ahead of him to get to his destination. He was worried the entire time about being late. The man who picked him up at the airport repeatedly told him not to worry, as the audience would wait. Sure enough, when he got to the engagement, late, no one had left, and the entire audience burst into applause. So-so story, and since it didn't happen to us, how do we drive it home? It just sort of lays there. And it has too many brothers.
Concerning the non-personal illustrations, many are available elsewhere. Worst of all, sometimes Evans says things that I just find offensive. On two separate occasions, he says that God is looking for "groupies." I understand his point: God wants people who worship him with the same fervor they do their favorite entertainer. Still, the language is just tasteless. The word has too much negative baggage. Groupies are usually mindless sycophants.
The positive side of this book is that it might give pastors an idea of how to look for illustrations in their own lives. I have often found that the personal illustrations I come up with are just as good as ones I find in books. So, all in all, this volume is worth a glance, if you can get it cheap. Don't expect too much, and you won't be disappointed. Oh, by the way, the numbers in the index refer to the numbers of the illustrations, not the page number. The illustrations have tiny superscript numberings at the end of each. Just thought you should know.

May I Quote You, General Chamberlain: Observations and Utterances from the North's Greatest Generals (May I Quote You, General Series)
Average Reviews:

Published in 1998 by Cumberland House Publishing, Inc. and edited by Randall Bedwell, "May I Quote You, General Chamberlain?" Is a superb collection of quotations from and about Medal of Honor recipient Joshua L. Chamberlain. It is 83 pages long and contains an introduction by Bedwell and a foreword at the beginning of each of the seven chapters that follow. Like all the other books in the "May I Quote You" series, this book shows many things Chamberlain himself said, but also shows what was thought about him by his fellow Union commanders. Unlike the other books, however, I could find little if anything said about him by his enemies in gray.
Well-educated, highly intelligent and beyond a doubt brave, Major General Chamberlain was also incredibly respectful towards his enemies. He was a key man in having the surrendering Confederate troops saluted at Appomattox, which did plenty to start mending the rift between North and South. An interesting note about Chamberlain's postwar years is that in 1898, at the age of 70, he volunteered for duty in the Spanish-American War. He was turned down in what he called one of the greatest disappointments of his life. That is the kind of soldier America needs. One who will stand up and volunteer to fight at any age, even long after his prime years have passed and he has already served his country with honor for many years. If you want a book on Joshua L. Chamberlain, the things he said and what was said of him, this is the right one for you. But it is not a total history of the life of General Chamberlain, start to finish. If you want something like that more than a book of quotes, look elsewhere.

Words That Matter: A Little Book of Life Lessons Review

Words That Matter: A Little Book of Life Lessons
Average Reviews:

I was eagerly anticipating this book, having loved Oprah's inspirational style and all the incredible people she seems to be surrounded by. This would be a book with the very best tidbits of 10 years compilation from Oprah Magazine...so what could possibly be better than that?
Well, the lovely cover makes this appear like a jewel, but inside was actually rather bland. Page after page was filled with single sentences by various important people of our time (and some good old tried & true as well). Without any inside "art" or decorative formulation, it looked a bit more like a textbook than a light, fun read. Perhaps the simplicity was intentional, so as not to take away from the content, but it resulted in something that was actually a little boring.
That said, Oprah certainly knows how to put together great minds, and the contributors were a fantastic group of people. Not all of what they had to say was "inspirational", some was more advice-like, or common sense wisdom. It's also possible, in my opinion, that the book could have been edited a bit further, as this did not feel like just the "best of the best". Rather, it was as if there was a tidbit from every interview and/or article from O Magazine ever written. There were many sentences that really said nothing special or new to me. Maybe that's because I am a subscriber to O, and have simply seen it all before.
This is still a sweet little book, geared primarily toward women & more precisely, adults. I had thought this might be a fabulous graduation gift but I don't feel it has the tone of something appealing to a college grad. However, Oprah followers and those who love her magazine contributors (Suze Orman on finance, for example) and her friends (Maya Angelou, and more of course) will probably enjoy it, though they may have the same experience of deja vu that I have had. I suppose if we are to be experiencing anything more than once, it might as well be something positive.

They Poured Fire on Us From the Sky: The Story of Three Lost Boys from Sudan Review

They Poured Fire on Us From the Sky: The Story of Three Lost Boys from Sudan
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
In a land where family life was everything and the most fearsome thing was a prowling hyena or lion, fire suddenly exploded from the sky. THEY POURED FIRE ON US FROM THE SKY is the vivid description of the war in southern Sudan as seen through the eyes of three little boys, Benson, Benjamin and Alephonsion - who suddenly became homeless orphans and were forced to trek across Sudan to Kenya and Ethiopia without food or water. No longer having a father to frighten away the animals or a mother to prepare food, these five-year-old boys had to figure out how to survive. In addition to the horrors brought on by nature in the form of heat, no water, no food, hunting animals, biting snakes and insects, they soon discovered that people were not very nice to boys traveling alone. Frequently their food, clothing and blankets were taken from them or they were beaten and driven away. Even their own soldiers mistreated them and they found that after surviving so much and traveling so far, they were not exactly welcome in Kenya or Ethiopia. But survive they did to come to the United States to begin life anew.
This gut-wrenching book is a real page-turner and I found myself unable to put it down, even when the stories brought tears and indescribable anger. It was a real eye-opener to read of United Nations aid gone astray as locals took the best for themselves and left the refugees starving. There were, of course, the good people who helped the refugees with food and transportation and even lost their jobs because of it. If you never believed that war could change ordinary people into selfish monsters, then this is the book for you. The book is well written, flows well, and the transitions are so smooth that sometimes I found myself going back to the beginning of the chapter to see which lost boy was telling this particular portion of the story. There were amusing sections such as when the boys were preparing to go the US and they were attempting to learn about flushing toilets. One of them didn't remember what the book instructions said and managed to flood the restroom at the airport terminal. The things we take for granted get a new life when viewed through these boys' eyes. I recommend this book for everyone in America.

Oxymoronica: Paradoxical Wit & Wisdom From History's Greatest Wordsmiths Review

Oxymoronica: Paradoxical Wit and Wisdom From History's Greatest Wordsmiths
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)

One of my best friends had an aunt (let's call her Ginny) who, like Yogi Berra, could bring a lively conversation to a screeching halt with one brief comment. Aunt Ginny really was unaware of this (shall we say) unique talent. She was not trying to be funny, clever, etc. On the contrary, she offered what she considered to be a serious comment and everyone knew what her intended meaning was. For example:
"Quicker than you can count Jack Robinson."
"Deader than a door knob."
"She was born on a silver platter."
My personal favorite:
"He's on a treadmill to Bolivia."
I am curious to know what Aunt Ginny would make of Grothe's book. (She died many years ago.) She would no doubt agree with many observations but perhaps not see the humor in any of them. Grothe has selected what he calls "oxymoronical" material from his vast collection of quotations. With regard to the term, his definition: "Oxymoronica, n.; A compilation of self-contradictory terms, phrases, or quotations; examples of oxymoronica appear illogical or nonsensical at first, but upon reflection, make a good deal of sense and are often profoundly true." As other reviewers have correctly noted, many of the quotations which Grothe has assembled are hilarious, others insightful, still others cynical. All of them qualify as "oxymoronica."
Among those forgotten or of which I was previously unaware, my personal favorites include:
"Meetings are indispensable when you don't want to do anything."
John Kenneth Galbraith
"Hatreds are the cinders of affection."
Sir Walter Raleigh
"I must follow the people. Am I not their leader?"
Benjamin Disraeli
"What you get free costs too much."
Jean Anouilh
"Good fiction is that which is real."
Ralph Ellison
"Nothing is funnier than unhappiness."
Samuel Beckett (in Endgame)
Selections are organized within fourteen chapters, each of which has a generic subject such as "Sex, Love & Romance," "Ancient Oxymoronica," and "The Literary Life." I presume to suggest that Grothe's anthology be skimmed occasionally rather than read cover-to-cover. In the Foreword, Richard Lederer offers these comments which serve as an appropriate conclusion to my review: "Paradox is a particularly powerful device to ensnare truth because it concisely illuminates the contradictions that are at the very heart of our lives. It engages our hearts and minds because, beyond its figurative employment, paradox has always been at the center of of the human experience." Or, to paraphrase Yogi Berra, if people don't want to appreciate oxymoronica, nobody's going to stop them.
Those who share my high regard for this book are urged to check out The Portable Curmudgeon and The Return of the Portable Curmudgeon, both edited by Jon Winokur; also John M. Shanahan's The Most Brilliant Thoughts of All Time (In Two Lines or Less) and Condensed Knowledge: A Deliciously Irreverent Guide to Feeling Smart Again, edited by Will Pearson.

Inevitably, every coach will hunger for the right words when trying to communicate with his team, especially in certain situations. Whether the situation is before a big game, after a loss, while overcoming adversity, or otherwise, articulating the right idea in words can be most important in the ongoing drive for success. There is always a need for saying the right thing at the right time.
In a departure from the norm, Dan Spainhour organized A Season in Words to correspond directly with how a sports season is played out, beginning to end. Similar to the teams he coached, nothing is lost to organization. This 128-page manual, filled with over 1600 opinions, insights, and wits of wisdom, provides a coach with quotes and motivational words for every conceivable situation or problem that could be confronted in a given season. Spainhour collected these words throughout his 20-year coaching career. What were his sources? "Some read, some given, some heard and possibly some even made up."
We all have seen numerous publications filled with motivational and inspiring quotes. A Season in Words separates itself from the others with the number and depth of its quotes and with the highly organized 14 situations that the manual focuses on. A Season in Words is a practical tool that could aid any coach as he communicates with his team.

The Story Behind the Glory: Winning Quotes from Sports Greats on the Game of Life
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Behind every great sportsman is a system of values: hard work, self-improvement, service to his community. Those values help drive an athlete (or a coach, or even a sportswriter) to greatness, and the distillation of those values are reflected in a person's outlook, and in his words.
Bill Cairo has assembled the famous quotations from eleven sports greats, athletes who excelled at everything from golf, football, and baseball to coaching, teaching, and jotting purple poetry about the ups and downs of teams and their fortunes on the field of play. But this is not simply a book of quotations; if it were, Cairo coul have written the chapters about Yogi Berra and Mohammed Ali and called it a day. SportsWise also conveys the biographies of the sports figures included on its "Top Ten"-style listing, allowing the reader a fuller understanding of what the book's subtitle calls "The Story Behind the Glory."
Cairo clearly understands the different sporting disciplines he's writing about, but the reader needn't be a pro himself to enjoy SportsWise. In order to be thrilled and moved by this book, all you need to do is turn the pages and read.

Also included is plenty of sports history and trivia, making for a perfect trifecta of a sports book.

I got this very nifty reference book for Father's Day so I've taken my sweet time getting around to reviewing it. As someone who does a fair amount of public speaking I can say this is very user-friendly, because it organizes all the great quotations of the Bible according to topic, from 'Abuse' to 'Worry.' There is also a very helpful index, so basically it is very easy to browse for topics in this book. Besides just organizing the various quotations, each topical chapter contains a brief introduction that helps the reader understand the basic message of what the Bible says about that particular topics. The book is set in very readable type with adequate spacing between the quotations, so it is a very usable gift for anyone, including seniors. I think it is neat just to browse through this, but I also think it would be helpful to preachers, public speakers, writers, etc. Incidentally, it uses the old King James Version but (pleasant surprise) modernizes some of the more difficult words of that old version, so it manages to be both readable and traditional.

The Food Contrarian: Quotes For People Recovering From or Dealing with Eating Issues

I thoroughly enjoyed reading Tuchy Palmieri's book "The Food Contrarian". With all of the eating disorders people have in the world today, this book is extremely helpful. He states many others have said "when reading on a daily basis, they gain insight, confidence, and courage to overcome their specific problem."
The quotes in this book are very inspiring. I am going to hang one page a week on my refrigerator to remind me I do not have to eat to feel better emotionally.
I especially liked the quote: "Food fight: When the food wins." How true that statement is!
The steps one must take to overcome their food addiction will be made easier to achieve by reading this book. I think Mr. Palmieri did a fabulous job on how he presented the list of steps. It is as if you are telling yourself you can meet your goal. You can be strong. You can do it!
I truly enjoyed the poetic pieces you can recite to yourself to make you feel loved and to give you confidence in times of need.
I highly recommend this to anyone who needs help losing weight or with anorexia, bulimia or any food disorder. The Food Contrarian is very helpful for a person recovering from a food disorder. This also would make a wonderful and caring gift to a friend or family member who needs help.

This book is one of my favorites to thumb through from time to time. The book is organized with one chapter for each president and begins with one to two pages of biography and historical context, then moves on to some of the most profound and most ridiculous words to fall from the lips of men. I enjoy the quick synopsis of each presidency, and take a lesson that quotes can inspire and inflame. This book gives the reader a good sketch of each of our presidents, expressed in their own words. I hope the authors continue to update this volume as new presidents pass into history and as old ones are revisited.
