Faith in the Valley: Lessons for Women on the Journey to Peace Review

Faith in the Valley: Lessons for Women on the Journey to Peace
Average Reviews:

I first saw Iyanla Vanzant on Oprah (another truly inspiring woman) the more I watched this exceptional women the more I was astounded by her life and work. I looked up her books on the internet and read the excepts from each. These excepts were not lenghty but in that time I found a need in myself to discover more. The short excepts made real sense to me. So I went and purchased the book 'Faith in the Valley'. It made me wake up at night and listen to my thoughts that were deep in my stomach and not only to listen but to take notice of them, good and bad. To listen to faith that for so many years I had simply let into the fringes of my life and never into the core. Iyanla Vanzant is thought provoking, inspirational and gifted. I have all her books now. She is a writer and teacher that would inspire Mother Teresa.

Your Writing Coach: From Concept to Character, From Pitch to Publication Review

Your Writing Coach: From Concept to Character, From Pitch to Publication
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is a great book for aspiring writers as well as established writers looking to branch out into new areas. A lot of writing books seem to be by a novelist writing only about novels, by a screenwriter writing only about screenplays, etc., but Wolff explores both of those genres, as well as non-fiction books, magazine articles and more. He assumes you're serious, and while he doesn't fill you with delusions of grandeur, he doesn't insult you by selling some fantasy of instant riches, either. He makes it clear that writing for a living requires dedication and hard work, just like any other career, and then he shows you how to go about making it happen.
The title is important and telling - Wolff's tone is professional and authoritative, yet friendly and quite cordial, and you get enjoyable little glimpses into his own successful career and personality as he provides anecdotes from his own published/produced works in all the fields he discusses. It's obvious that he's speaking from his own experiences in all aspects of the business(es), not just the writing, but also the marketing, pitching, ethics, etc. In addition to drawing on his own background, he also brings in snippets and examples from lots of other writers and creative types, most of whom are very well-known.
Actually, there is a lot of good information in here for creative business people of all sorts, like copywriters, marketing staff, and even product development types, anybody who needs to manage time, inspire others, hatch ideas or promote a vision, all of which are facets of the writing business and life. The book and table of contents are nicely organized and detailed in such a way that you can easily cherry-pick the information you're looking for. Of course, if you're a "regular" writer you will want to read every page, but the organization makes it easy to revisit various topics without cluttering up the sturdy, finely printed book with unsightly Post-It Notes.
Finally, the thing I liked best about this book is that it's a lot more than just a book. Every chapter includes an access code you can enter at one of Wolff's websites, where you can view bonus content and video interviews with Wolff and many of the people he mentions in each chapter. Wolff even makes himself available via his website, like a true coach would, as a source of advice and inspiration. It's a brilliant blend of old and new media, and access to the website makes the book a real 2-for-1 bargain.
As you might guess, I'd highly recommend this book. I've got a copy of my own and bought another for a friend, because this is the kind of book that if you loan it out, you may not get it back!

Oneness With All Life: Inspirational Selections from A New Earth Review

Oneness With All Life: Inspirational Selections from A New Earth
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The first thing I noticed about Eckhart Tolle's Oneness with All Life: Inspirational Selections from a New Earth, is that it is a beautifully bound hard cover book (ribbon bookmark included,)with an old-time feel. The inside is beautifully laid out with flower illustrations. It actually conveys a feeling of peacefulness to hold the book.
"Your inner purpose is to awaken," says Tolle. This is the essence of the book, and what my own spiritual teacher tries to instill in her students. Each chapter works on this lofty spiritual plane.
Tolle recommends that you read A New Earth before Oneness with all Life, as this book is a distilled version of the first and contains fairly advanced spiritual lessons. He suggests reading a random section or single chapter at a time. The point is to read, reflect, and allow the messages to resonate within your soul.
"The informational content of this book is of relatively little importance," he writes. "You read it not so much to learn something new, but to go deeper, become more present, awaken out of the stream of incessant and compulsive thinking."
This sums up the book for me: "If you come across passages in this book that you feel are powerful, I want you to realize that what you are feeling is your own spiritual power. That is to say you are in your essence."
This book is like having your own spiritual teacher to turn to whenever you need some clarity.
A typical passage: "How to be at peace now. By making peace with the present moment."
Highly recommended.

Writing to Change the World Review

Writing to Change the World
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Deep down, all writers aspire to be what Mary Pipher calls "Change Writers". Mary Pipher gets to the heart, the root of why we write. Whether we are 'liberal' or 'conservative', republican or democrat, athiest or 'fundamentalist', we write because we understand that we can influence people with our words.
This is not a book on "How to Write". This is not even a book of inspiration for curing "Writer's Block". This is a book that brings to light the things which the heart of every writer knows, yet often forgets.
Pipher separates her book into three sections, "What We Alone Can Say", "The Writing Process" and "Calls to Action". I found "What We Alone Can Say" and "Calls to Action" to be the most insightful and original. I was actually debating whether I liked the book while reading the center section. But, Pipher pulled through. The irony is that she includes a Mickey Spillane quote that says, "Nobody reads a book to get to the middle." I wonder if Pipher struggled with the center section herself.
If you want a book on how to write, or a book for inspiration, pick up Write Down the Bones. Pipher also recommends this book in a thorough list of Recommended Readings. If you are a writer, a performer, a blogger or a poet who is trying to figure out how to make a difference, pick up Pipher's book.
I have found that many of my most treasured books begin with a James Baldwin quote. Pipher chooses, "You write in order to change the world, knowing perfectly well that you probably can't, but also knowing that literature is indispensable to the world... The world changes according to the way people see it, and if you alter, even by a millimeter, the way... people look at reality, then you can chage it." Pipher offers a guide to changing the world one "Baldwin Millimeter" at a time.
(Side note: Pipher references a song by Billie Holiday "Strange Fruit" While this was the perfect example, the song was not actually written by her, but by a poet who does not receive credit in this book.)

The 7 Habits Of Highly Effective Teens Review

The 7 Habits Of Highly Effective Teens

At the ripe age of 23, I borrowed my 18 year old brother's copy of this book and was enthralled.I cant help but wonder what a difference this book would have made in my life if I had read it at age 14 and not ten years later. The layout of the book is fun and appeals to readers of any age. This makes it easier to read. One thing I have to say, is that this book is one of the most powerful positive thinking books on the market. Although it's aimed at teens, the values and tips can apply to anyone. I loved the little excercises which are still applicable. Sean's frankness on matters really inspired me. My favourite part of the book though is the real life stories he relates on how teenagers have overcome difficulties and still succeed in the end. A great read, highly recommended !

It's Not About Me: Rescue From the Life We Thought Would Make Us Happy Review

It's Not About Me: Rescue From the Life We Thought Would Make Us Happy
Average Reviews:

Max Lucado is the master of inspirational writing. I love the tricky title "It's Not About Me". After all these years - most of us thought it was!
The editorial reviews are so well done, I can do little to improve them. This is a small engrossing book that explores why we are here on earth in the first place - it is to reflect the glory of God. For anyone who has never read a Max Lucado book, and there are several, I recommend this one first. I have read two others and plan to read them all. They are not "preachy" nor difficult to understand. They are written by a humble Christian pastor who never fails to give credit to his wife and children for their support and encouragement.
This book touches a chord in all of us as we often forget our Creator and how much He loves us. Once you are rescued from a life of self-promotion, self-preservation and self-centeredness, and realize you are here to reflect God's glory, your life becomes changed. This book makes a wonderful gift and it deserves a place in your library where you can reread it often.

One Month to Live: Thirty Days to a No-Regrets Life Review

One Month to Live: Thirty Days to a No-Regrets Life
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I was inspired by this book immediately, right from its introduction titled "Living the dash." The authors use that phrase to refer to the dash between the birth and death dates on headstones. The dash represents a lifetime. What a person does during that dash, the authors point out, is completely in his or her hands.
The authors challenge you -- literally -- to make the most of it, to open your eyes and live each day with enthusiasm and meaning. The first page has a contract to sign called "The One-Month-To-Live Challenge" which states "I commit with God's strength to live the next thirty days as if they are my last so I can experience life to the full!" There is a spot for your signature and a spot for a friend to sign as a witness.
The rest of the book serves as a day-by-day manual for your monthlong conversion. There's a chapter for each day. Each one opens with two inspiring quotes (from people as varied as Helen Keller, Ralph Waldo Emerson and Maya Angelou) and includes questions to help you examine your life from a particular perspective. At the end of each chapter are three ways to act on the topic, for example making a list of five things you'd change about your life if you only had a month to live, or going outside and looking at the stars.
Though "One Month to Live" is filled with Biblical verses and stories, its message, and approach, can easily work for those of any faith. Living life to the fullest: What a terrific goal! As George Eliot wrote, in a quote from chapter 8: "It is never too late to be what you might have been."
Here is the book's table of contents:
Day 1: Introduction -- Living the dash
Principle 1: Live Passionately
Day 2: Roller Coaster -- Riding the Big Dipper
Day 3: Time Squared -- Spending your most valuable resource
Day 4: Power Surge -- Connecting with the ultimate source

Day 10: Ocean -- Exploring the depths of forgiveness
Day 11: Everest -- Scaling the obstacles to unity
Day 12: Boxing Ring -- Resolving conflicts by fighting fair
Day 13: Sandpaper -- Smoothing the edges
Day 14: The Gift -- Thanking those around you
Day 15: Last Call -- Revealing your heart
Principle 3: Learn Humbly
Day 16: Star Power -- Discovering who you were meant to be
Day 17: GPS -- Finding your direction

Epic: The Story God Is Telling Review

Epic: The Story God Is Telling
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Eldredge begins this book with a quote from Chesterton: "I had always felt life first as a story--and if there is a story there is a story teller." With that as the backdrop, Eldredge claims that far too many Christians have lost their story, lost the narrative that gives meaning and purpose to their lives - and without the storyline, they are relegated to a role behind stage, out of the limelight of life, destined for insignificance and mediocrity. Eldredge claims that a life of mediocrity is not why God sent His only Son to die for mankind - there must be something more...there is something more!
In a book that feels like you're reading The Chronicles of Narnia, The Epic is a dive into the land of enchantment and mystery where there is a battle and you are a warrior. Eldredge paints the picture for the reader that the great cosmic struggle of the day is actually centered around each person - a battle for their heart and their mind - and, claims Eldredge, too many followers of Christ are relegated to sitting on the sidelines watching as others engage for the cause of Christ. For John Eldredge, the sidelines of life might was well be hell itself - clearly no place for the follower of Jesus Christ, a man of passion, a man of purpose, a man whose life bubbled over with meaning and transcendence - and if He is our model, what should the life of those who claim to be His follower look like? Nothing less, says Eldredge.
The Epic is a great read, very encouraging and powerful, but not for the faint of heart and not for the theologian looking for a biblical discourse on a particular doctrine - it is a book from the heart for the heart.

Grandpa's Journey: Lessons from the Kitchen in the Art of Living Well Review

Grandpa's Journey: Lessons from the Kitchen in the Art of Living Well
Average Reviews:

Grandpa took us all on a jounery. Life lessons were taught through experience.
In the spirit of true auteurship, Mr. D'Agnese draws from his own life expierience,to pass along thought provoking tidbits in the hope of enriching the readers journey through life.
His use of a teenager to learn the lessons works well, because the boy is on the cusp of adulthood. He is an open book, eager to be written. He is in essence, D'Agnese's audience. As the teen matures, we all learn to appreciate our life's worth, and relationships.
D'Agnese talks of recreating one's self through a change in habits, and a positive attitude(- his reaffirmation).
At one point, the teacher becomes the student. Grandpa has to "come to grips" with his feelings(about his family)- and realizes that in order to change these feelings, he has to acknowledge them.
His advise to us all is " live your life like you're important".
While reading this book, I intended to write a review. In doing so, I kept notes; and therefore imersed myself into, and interacted with the lessons being taught.
A well written novel which one can use as a guide for self examination. Anthony, " good job, well done ".

Chicken Soup for the Nurse's Soul: 101 Stories to Celebrate, Honor and Inspire the Nursing Profession (Chicken Soup for the Soul) Review

Chicken Soup for the Nurse's Soul: 101 Stories to Celebrate, Honor and Inspire the Nursing Profession (Chicken Soup for the Soul)
Average Reviews:

So for nurses, what is better than holiday overtime and that nice young pharmaceutical rep with the glazed donuts? War stories! And a whole group of other nurses to share them with.
Let's face it, we have to edit our stories around lay people, temper the humor, spare them the deep, down visceral core of our feelings---the fact that have to laugh in the face of disaster, and that we cry in linen closets. But around other nurses? Honey, just sit down a minute and prop up those tired feet and let me tell you a tale....
This is what is so absolutely great about Chicken Soup For the Nurse's Soul: it's the nitty gritty on why we love our profession. And why we continue to love it in the midst of our hardest times, our darkest hours and even now when our country is in crisis with a nationwide nursing shortage. It's a book about dedication and caring. And just who it is on the other side of that thermometer.
Every story in this book is aimed right at our hearts---to make us cry, laugh, shake our heads at what we have survived, and to bring us hope and strength. To make us proud of what we do.
Kudos to Jack Canfield, Mark Victor Hansen, LeAnn Thieman--a hero in her own right-- and Nancy Mitchell Autio for this gift you have given us: The right to speak out and be proud.

As the co-author of this book, I have to thank the amazing story contributors who wrote deep and moving stories about their journey through breast cancer in order to help those who have been newly diagnosed, their families and friends. This book would not have been possible without their courage, strength, and humor. Yes, there are a lot of funny stories in here too. It was an honor to work with such talented and generous women survivors (and one man) who are all surviving and thriving. This book is inspiring, it gives you a lift and lets you know that as you go through the often scary treatments for breast cancer, you are not alone.

This book is an honest journey of the human experience and enables one to understand the meaning of life. It is very useful to all adults whether one is dealing with first hand depression or someone close to you is. He is able to reach the inner most sensitive parts of every human being and give comfort where there is pain. This is a book that needs to be kept out so one can read it at anytime, any chapter. It shows how going through very painful periods in this physical world lead to peace and valuable information that needs to be shared. It looks at life through very healthy eyes with God as our director. I don't think anyone could possibly read this book and not feel hopeful afterwards.

Everyday Wisdom Review

I purchased this cassette 2 years ago and am now replacing it; I listen to it A LOT! I find it easy to quote the statements/affirmations in many different situations in life (I have almost memorized them). The tape really does offer words of wisdom. I, unlike another reviewer, like the short statements, as varied as they are, rather than a continuous dialogue. Mr. Dyer states that the tape is designed this way, to pick out one idea at a time. I can listen to it over and over again, and still catch something I missed, or understood differently before. If you want to hear a postive message, if you want to retrain your thinking to a loving/positive mode, I can't say enough good about the message on this tape.

Charlie's Thinking Cheese: Food for Thought and Inspiration With Motivational Seeds of Wisdom from the Garden of Life Review

Charlie's Thinking Cheese: Food for Thought and Inspiration With Motivational Seeds of Wisdom from the Garden of Life

Not only did I really enjoyed reading this book, but I've also enjoyed slipping the little cards that come with it into the pockets and handbags of unsuspecting friends. "Your kindness touched my heart. Being around you is its very own blessing." "I admire your patience in difficult situations." "You have a great sense of humor that delights me." These are just a few of the many supportive, appreciative and affirming messages you can share. Do it Charlie's way. Enhance the lives of the people around you however you can, even if they will never know it was you who did it. Who did it? Maybe a little mouse named Charlie, who thinks they're just great.
This would be a great gift for anyone who tends to be down about their lives. The story is inspiring, but more than that, it helps us shift from a perspective of thinking about what we have or don't have and into one of thinking about how we can meet the needs of others, and does so without ever suggesting any "shoulds." This is a great little story bundled with a great little set of inspirational treats.

Blade Silver: Color Me Scarred (TrueColors Series #7) Review

Blade Silver: Color Me Scarred (TrueColors Series #7)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Ruth Wallace is a ticking bomb --- not one that's liable to explode, but rather implode. Ever since her mom tried to commit suicide, Ruth's dad and his explosive (yet previously manageable) temper have grown to mountainous proportions. Trying as hard as she can, Ruth wracks her brain continually in an attempt to make certain that the household is running as smoothly as it did before her mom's breakdown. Ruth knows that even the most minor infractions of the house rules will send her father into a verbal rampage where he will further humiliate, degrade, and shame her.
As Ruth knows, there is no shelter to be found running to her mom for support. Dubbing her now depressed mother the Ghost Mom (since she only comes out of her room when there's no one else in sight), Ruth becomes increasingly angry and frustrated at her circumstances. Even her younger brother, Caleb, is no help. After one argument too many, he takes off to places unknown, leaving Ruth solely in charge of maintaining the home --- and taking the heat for Caleb's disappearance.
Feeling utterly alone and trapped, Ruth's only solace is to lock herself in the bathroom, carefully remove a razor blade she's hidden away so many times before that she's lost count, and begin cutting. Ruth, absorbed in the ritual, feels a measure of control every time she cuts. Following her carefully scripted routine, she watches the blood flow, stops the bleeding with a tissue, and then bandages the wound. For the moment, Ruth feels better --- until the next time she needs an escape from the pain, that is.
It isn't until the weather begins to warm and Ruth continues to wear long sleeve shirts that she realizes her cutting isn't going to stay a secret all summer. Fretting about how to stop the cycle causes Ruth increased stress, and only after a friend spots her scarred arms during a clothes shopping trip does Ruth begin to face her problem.
While there are no simple cures, she does find help from a school counselor who gets Ruth admitted to a home for teens with addictions. Overwhelmed and frightened (of the unknown and of her father's reaction), Ruth wants to back out at the last second, but doesn't. After four emotionally challenging weeks of counseling and support, Ruth finds the strength she needs to start over; though her journey will be tough, she's ready to let her inner and outer scars show so that her healing will be of the lasting sort.
As with each of the previous books in the TrueColors series, Melody Carlson addresses a frightening new trend with sensitivity while offering practical hope to hurting teens.

My high-school basketball team gave me this book after I finished my senior year, and I am extremely grateful to them. If you have ever enjoyed participating in, watching, or following high-school sports, this is a book for you! It is full of the things that made me love the game to start with... the determination, pride, euphoria, occasional let-downs, pain, tenacity and adrenaline that I feel when playing basketball are clearly demonstrated in this wonderful book. Pick it up and read it, buy it for your daughters, buy it for your sons!
