Good Boss, Bad Boss: How to Be the Best... and Learn from the Worst

I've had the pleasure of teaching with Bob at Stanford for nearly five years now. Reading this book will give you a small taste of the fun and brain-stimulating zip of being around Bob in real life!
Bob Sutton's writing is fun-to-read, extremely useful for practitioners, and based on real research. This is a rare combination in life generally, but particularly in business writing. Bob distills observational research and data into an actionable and memorable framework for leadership and management that -- if more people heeded it -- can make the world a better place. Sometimes the bad boss case studies make you cringe, but that's more than half the fun. By contrast, the good boss case studies are downright inspiring.
This is an entertaining *and* useful book because it puts a light on one of the most important relationships in our lives -- that between the manager and the managed. Note that Bob emphasizes the practices of the best bosses. This is a fundamentally optimistic point of view: it is saying that we can all improve, that we are all working prototypes capable of learning and getting better. As a highly imperfect (occasionally bad) boss, I appreciate that!
Whether you are a good boss, a bad boss, or living with either at work, this is a book that you should read. I guarantee that many folks above, below, and around you at work will be reading it and you don't want to wonder what they are talking about.
My only critique is that he should have used the word "boss-hole" in the title someplace. :)

Demystifying Dissertation Writing: A Streamlined Process from Choice of Topic to Final Text Review

Demystifying Dissertation Writing: A Streamlined Process from Choice of Topic to Final Text
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Dr. Single really does "demystify" the dissertation (and Master's thesis) writing process and provide a great deal of very useful information on how to WRITE a dissertation. She doesn't get into the research process (we get trained pretty well for that already), rather she focuses on what is needed to put words on "paper" and get this important milestone in an academic career written.
The ability to write the actual dissertation (thesis) appears to be something that is taken as a given by administrators in many PhD (Masters) programs. Perhaps it is because the students have actually made it into the program and to do so, they must have written many papers. The work required to write a (multi?) hundred page work is an order of magnitude higher than writing a class paper. Fortunately, Dr. Single breaks it down into manageable pieces. A series of ~forty page "papers", if you will. The dissertation becomes approachable and something that can be accomplished.
She also dispenses with two (IMO, fatal) "myths" that (1) you need to have a large block of time to write and (2) you should know everything about your topic before you start writing.
I have a family and between the family and other obligations, finding large blocks of time was almost impossible, thus dramatically slowing down my writing. Now I grab every opportunity to write, no matter how short. For me, the real benefit was that I am now always writing and because I am always writing, I am always thinking about my dissertation! And because I'm always thinking about my dissertation (even on a sub-conscious level), I am gaining insights and MAKING PROGRESS I was not before buying this book. I enjoy writing again!
Now, I am always writing. I no longer worry about knowing everything about the field or making it perfect. I just get the words down and know that I will be able to edit/revise them later. If I find a hole in my knowledge, I can fill it while writing. Most importantly, I am now giving my chair and committee members something to read and provide feedback on. It is good for them because they can see the work I am doing and I can get much needed feedback!
In addition, Dr. Single emphasizes creating writing support groups with your peers to help with various issues that come up during the dissertation and to provide useful constructive criticisms, advice, and information.
Finally, in what was the biggest surprise for me in the book, she provides a very efficient way to take useful "Citeable Notes" that are immediately useful in your dissertation. I had not realized how inefficient I was in note taking and how my focus when taking notes was not assisting me in finishing my dissertation. Learning her method for reading articles and note taking while using a reference program like Endnote, Reference Manager, etc. was truly an epiphany. For me, learning this one thing was easily worth the price of the book by itself.
IMO, the only shortcoming in the book is that it needs a full chapter on the dissertation proposal process and the differences in approach and process for writing the proposal vs. the final dissertation. Fortunately, there are currently a couple highly rated books here on Amazon.com on how to complete the proposal process.
However, do not take this as a reason to not buy this book! Rather, it is just an area I would like to see Dr. Single address in her next edition.
This book provides Dr. Single's 15+ years of experience guiding students through their dissertation and teaching the writing course at the University of Vermont. She has the experience and insights to help you know you too can finish your dissertation! Best of all, the price is such that it should not break the budget of students on a tight budget.
The bottom line is this book is about WRITING the dissertation. It is focused on that topic. Whether you are a PhD student in the middle of your coursework, ABD, an adviser/committee member, someone teaching a graduate-level research writing seminar, or a family member/friend of someone who is working on their dissertation, you should get this book! You would be sorry if you did not.

Theodore Roosevelt on Leadership: Executive Lessons from the Bully Pulpit Review

Theodore Roosevelt on Leadership: Executive Lessons from the Bully Pulpit
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Theodore Roosevelt was many different things to many different people. Most of all, he was a charismatic leader who inspired himself and others to great achievements in a time when America was starting to come of age as an emerging world power. James Strock did a tremendous job in capturing the many leadership lessons that can be learned from the life and times of this extraordinary man.
The book's thirteen chapter titles do a good job of describing Roosevelt's leadership effectiveness: "Leading-wherever you are," "Always learning," "Action, action, and still more action," "Getting the best on your team," "Putting action into words," and "Putting words into action" to name just a few. At the end of each chapter is a listing of Roosevelt's leadership take-aways that can serve as an excellent primer on leadership. For example, "A leader should aim to build a life based on service, not a career based on advancing up a series of positions," "Strive to exemplify character," "Courage (physical and moral) can be developed as an act of will," and "Use simple, down-to-earth stories to communicate complex issues."
Throughout the book, Strock made great use of many colorful Roosevelt quotes and anecdotes, what I affectionately call, "Teddyisms," to reinforce his main points and help bring those points to life. Besides extensive research into the life, writings, and others' personal recollections of Roosevelt, Strock made many effective references to respected current leadership and management experts such as Stephen Covey, Peter Drucker, John Maxwell, and Warren Bennis. Those references proved to me that Roosevelt's leadership has stood the test of time and is certainly still applicable today.
This book helped reinforce my opinion of Roosevelt as a morally and physically courageous leader who was not afraid to follow his vision and convictions despite often open and powerful public opposition. After reading this book, I can understand why many people view Roosevelt as a benchmark against which to judge public servants, especially presidents.

After the 60s, the movement for a better world faded into the 70s, and dissappeared entirely in the 80s. At least in the USA. God and his disciples were still alive and well in Jamaica. Instead of fishermen, they were musicians. When you listen deeply, you'll hear the message clearly. Bob Marley carried the truth for our times. That torch still burns in his music and the writing that came afterward. Read 56 Thoughts. It will touch you, move you, and enlighten you. 56 Thoughts is a book you will never put down. It will go with you every where because it is pure soul from a philosopher who knew what he was talking about.

Bob Marley began writing lyrics in the Early 1960's, and he continued to produce them until his passing in 1981. Critics have called these songs the best of the millennium. Yet, few readers have ever read Marley's magic on the page. For the first time, his eldest daughter Cedella has made a selection of her father's most prophetic and personal poems, insights and conversational messages. Here are meditations to soothe the soul and thoughts to penetrate the mind. Here too, is an encapsulated life of Bob Marley, the man. In his spare writings we can see the ebb and flow of his journey as an artist and a humanitarian. Packaged for purse and pocket, this collection is sure to find a place in everyone's heart.

Quotations from Chairman LBJ Review

Quotations from Chairman LBJ
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is a peculiar little volume of quotes from former U.S. president Lyndon B. Johnson. It's a parody of the "Little Red Book" from China, which contained the quotations of Communist party Chairman Mao Tse-tung.
The quotations from LBJ were not chosen because they are insightful or important. Many of them appear to be taken out of context with the intention of being used humorously. Others refer to his ranch in Texas, or to LBJ's attempts to conserve energy at the White House by turning off unneccessary lights.
A strange little book, which may be enjoyable to those with an interest in the time period.

Go In and In: Poems From the Heart of Yoga Review

Go In and In: Poems From the Heart of Yoga
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I first heard these poems read aloud in my yoga class at the start of meditation, but they are applicable to everyone who yearns for the "still point" inside themselves and who searches for connection to Spirit. They are for everyone who sometimes tries too hard, who has to learn again and again to be gentle with themselves. They are for everyone who feels a connection in Nature; says Danna, "I will worship /where the broad /arc of sky bends/to hear the bird song." This lovely unpretentious collection of poems - average length 3/4 of a page - is organized in: Gifts of Practice, Gifts of Life, Gifts of Nature, and Gifts of Union. Danna shares her own journey's challenges and lessons with honesty, wit, and beautifully chosen words. Over and over I had the "YES, that is exactly what it feels like" moment, as this work speaks directly to my heart. This is spirit-centered writing which is firmly grounded in the real world; take "This body is not flowing/with liquid energy, no,/and this mind is not/awash with peace. I/ fight myself in every posture, muscles shriek,/ fear freezes bones and a / sure sense of failure grows. / This too is practice, / this ground where grief / gains the upper hand, / and anger casts dark / shadows." Danna has dealt with depression and other challenges (described in the interesting Introduction) and has been a yoga teacher at Kripalu Center in Massachusetts, and these experiences are brought to her work. My copy of this book is full of post-it arrows and is always near my bed, as is her second book, One Soul. I am about to purchase her third. I have shared two of these poems with a TaiChi class I took, and I even brought one of the poems into therapy to read and discuss because it so expressed what I wanted to say. Honor your own journey with this poetry, worthy of reading over and over.

The Choosing: A Rabbi's Journey from Silent Nights to High Holy Days Review

The Choosing: A Rabbi's Journey from Silent Nights to High Holy Days

Rabbi Myers' book addresses the big questions about God, identity and upbringing. And also, whether it's possible to make black-bean matzoh ball soup. It's a funny and wonderful spiritual journey. I'm lucky enough to know Rabbi Myers personally, but I would have thought this book was great regardless. It should appeal to readers no matter their gender, sexual orientation or religion.

A young Lutheran girl grows up on Long Island, New York. She aspires to be a doctor, and is on the fast track to marriage and the conventional happily-ever-after. But, as the Yiddish saying goes, "Man plans, and God laughs." Meet Andrea Myers, whose coming-of-age at Brandeis, conversion to Judaism, and awakening sexual identity make for a rich and well-timed life in the rabbinate.

In The Choosing, Myers fuses heartwarming anecdotes with rabbinic insights and generous dollops of humor to describe what it means to survive and flourish on your own terms. Portioned around the cycle of the Jewish year, with stories connected to each of the holidays, Myers draws on her unique path to the rabbinate--leaving behind her Christian upbringing, coming out as a lesbian, discovering Judaism in college, moving to Israel, converting, and returning to New York to become a rabbi, partner, and parent.

Myers relates tales of new beginnings, of reinventing oneself, and finding oneself. Whether it's a Sicilian grandmother attempting to bake hamantaschen on Purim for her Jewish granddaughter, or an American in Jerusalem saving a chicken from slaughter during a Rosh Hashanah ritual, Myers keeps readers entertained as she reflects that spirituality, goodness, and morality can and do take many forms. Readers will enthusiastically embrace stories of doors closing and windows opening, of family and community, of integration and transformation. These captivating narratives will resonate and, in the author's words, "reach across coasts, continents, and generations."

This is a fun read for all who would like to include the wit and wisdom of Shakespeare in their daily communications. The alphabetical topics include such topics as lateness, wisdom, family, and happiness. Additional specific topics cover Principals, such as Hamlet and MacBeth. When searching for the right phrase, one has only to look up a subject and there are multiple examples of Shakespearean wisdom from which to choose. The book is equally fun to just read page after page. This is a good add-on for those who studied Shakespeare and now wish to refresh their knowledge on the subject.

From Wild Man to Wise Man: Reflections on Male Spirituality Review

From Wild Man to Wise Man: Reflections on Male Spirituality
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Richard Rohr begins this revision of "The Wild Man's Journey" by defining God as "wild" in that God does not operate under human rules. God is free, that is, no matter what men do, God is "always the initiator, always good, always available." Men whose lives are based on performance and exercise of control are powerless before such wildness. Rohr pursues the theme with examples from scripture. The story of Abraham, for example, "has nothing to do with order, certitude, clarity, reason, logic, church authority, or merit. This is an utterly free God trying to create a spiritually free people." Additional topics include men's liberation, masculine and feminine spirituality, neither of which is exclusive to one gender; wild male saints; father hunger; male grief; and the powerful powerlessness of God. The appendix offers a structure for a men's group.
Though this work is written primarily for men, it has much to say to anyone who aspires to a deeper relationship with God.

I decided to post a review because I'm responding to the one below. I actually loved this book. Bush is made to look like a fool because he is a fool and then some. If you are a big fan of George W Bush than buying this book is probably a mistake but if you are like the rest of us, it's a lot of fun and quite informative. The fact is it's funny. period. It's nice to have for the cover alone. I'm giving it for Christmas gifts this year.

ATTENTION REPUBLICANS! Please use this book to beat yourselves about the head until November 2008! DUMBASS is the complete collection of outrageous quotes from President George W Bush, the world's most powerful moron. Both hysterically funny and utterly infuriating, DUMBASS escorts readers humorously through years of George's verbal carnage and leaves us wondering HOW and WHY someone so stupid was permitted to usurp America and orchestrate the greatest foreign relations disaster in history. Not your average quote book, DUMBASS reflects W's own words through the unforgiving lens of popular culture and history as Carlysle utilizes clever quips, quotes, jokes and essays to draw greater (albeit disturbing) insight into the mind of this spectacularly and uniquely inept man. A scathing combination of humor and serious commentary, DUMBASS is a book you will read, re-read and share with your friends for years to come. Great book, especially the really funny back and forth emails Ted gets going with some of these places. For instance, the Mandarin Oriental Hotel in Tokyo. Here Ted writes to them that he understands their hotel offers soup in their rooms. They email Ted back stating that they do have soap, as well as shower gel in the rooms (an innocent error). Ted replies back that chicken noodle soap sounds dee-licious. They apologize to Ted for misunderstanding the word soup for soap. Ted goes on about using Chicken noodle soap in the shower. What ensues is a truly funny exchange between Ted and the Mandarin Oriental Hotel. Very, very humorous! We passed the book around and everyone was just reading their favorite parts.
