Beautiful Things Happen When a Woman Trusts God by Sheila Walsh
The opening illustration of the book is quite personal, as the author thinks of herself as a child on a swing, being pushed by her mother higher and higher. Oh, how she loved to go so high! One day at the park through unforeseen circumstances, the neighborhood bully began to push her on the swing. He wasn't pushing her any higher than she had gone before, yet she was terrified. It wasn't about the swing or the experience. It was completely and totally about WHO was pushing. This is defined as trust and is what I felt to be the foundational premise for the book.Sheila Walsh provides twelve chapters with topics such as fear, pain, and darkness; then gives us a Biblical glimpse of how God turns them into courage, prayer, and vision. A few of the Bible characters discussed in the book are Moses, Gideon, Joseph, and Abraham. The author outlines how each character's trust in God or lack of was displayed in their lives through different avenues and circumstances and then God's revelation of beauty in their walks with Him is unfolded. My favorite quote: "We don't always see it, are tempted not to trust it, but the fact remains that God is always making a way for you that's according to His grand plan." This book spoke to me personally on so many levels. I loved every minute of reading it.
In the conclusion, the author returns to her example of the swing and lists some amazing insights. I'll not list them here; you need to read the book!

Tales of a Shaman's Apprentice: An Ethnobotanist Searches for New Medicines in the Amazon Rain Forest Review

Tales of a Shaman's Apprentice: An Ethnobotanist Searches for New Medicines in the Amazon Rain Forest
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
If you're a student of ethnobotany, you've come across the works and influence of Richard Evans Schultes who not only got the discipline on the charts but also spawned all of its major researchers. Plotkin, like many of the other ethnobotanists out there, never imagined going into this area but after attending a lecture by Schultes was forever hooked. And who wouldn't be? There are few tracks of study that harken back to the great era of discovery when large swaths of maps were inscribed "TERRA INCOGNITA" and strange tales of lost tribes, hidden ruins, and secret rituals abounded. In short, ethnobotany is a calling card for the last terrestrial adventure. Reading any of its texts one gets to take part in this adventure vicariously.
Like "One River" (Wade Davis), Plotkin's "Tales of a Shaman's Apprentice" takes us to the most remote areas of the Amazon and allows us to sample the last vestiges of traditional cultures where, in the words of Plotkin, the arrival of Columbus in 1492 is just being felt. It's taken 500 years for European civilization to finally penetrate the canopy of the deep rainforest but the Conquest is now nearly complete and the very last of the holdouts are starting to wear ratty jeans and tossed off t-shirts, sing cheesy Bible hymns, and guzzle down Coca-Cola. For all the adventure and good writing, a long sad tune is heard as one reads this book; a threnody to bemoan the last gasp of wise-old cultures as their vision goes dark. And with each of these cultures is lost all the knowledge of plants that they have come to know so well. But, in truth, the loss of this knowledge is not so important since the plants themselves are disappearing into oblivion even faster. As was recently reported, the Amazonian rainforest lost 10000 square miles in 2004 alone. It seems that all one can do is stand tall at the funeral to pay respect.
Lest one lash out too quickly at the misguided missionaries or encroaching campesinos, Plotkin does a majestic job of introducing us to these characters and showing how each is doing what is right in its own way. It's just that the rainforest was never meant to take on modernity and humanity's billions. As the two clash, modernity-as has been its record-wins, even at the loss of irreplaceable natural resources.
The book is hard to put down and if one needs more of the same, "One River" should be the next read. With enough interest in the Amazon and its issues perhaps, just perhaps, a critical mass of people can come together to better protect this ecological and anthropological treasure trove.

The Reconnection Review

The Reconnection
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I just finished reading The Reconnection. I debated whether to write a review and, finally, decided that I would go ahead and share my thoughts.
I am an osteopath who has been in practice for 17 years. Each of our paths is different and I would never presume to question anyone else's work. What the author describes is, I assume, his experience.
My own journey has brought me to a place where much of what is described in this book is quite familiar. I experience it daily.
I found the first half of the book ( up to page 83 in the 2001 version that I have) unhelpful. This is the autobiographical aspect in which the author describes his own development. He tells us repeatedly that he has a special gift, that he was sought out [given this gift] because he is "a master," " we [entities who speak to him] have come because of your reputation." (p.70)
The author is very, very special. He spends almost one-third of the book reminding us of this. He is not just special; he is very special.
So much for the first part of the book, the personality.
However, the second half of the book is entirely different.
It contains many nuggets which, based on my own limited but practical experience I can say ring true.
He provides many guidelines and pearls ( please forgive the unintended pun) which will prove invaluable for anyone seriously interested in entering this path regardless of whatever level that may be.
His advice on dealing with clients, length of time, follow-up visits, mind states of the practitioner, and beliefs associated with such work are spot on.
It took me many years to learn much of this on my own.
A few other personal comments:
You need not attend any class, seminar or read any book to do this work. It is yours whether you consciously know this or not. Silently ask to be taught when you interact with anyone and, I promise, you will.
Your hands are already activated. You need not seek out anyone to activate them.
There is no right or wrong way. There is just what presents.
Don't try to accomplish anything. Let It do the work.
Your trying only gets in the way.
There is no need for any entities or spirits but, if you wish to cultivate such things, you will experience that, too. However, my own experience is that this is totally unnecessary.
The author expresses his own beliefs. You need not adopt them in order to successfully experience what is described in this volume.
Trust yourself, trust the moment.
Know that All is well.

"Although the book is geared toward morning meditations, you can benefit from it anytime, day or night. I suggest keeping it on your bedside table or desk so that you can refer to it whenever you need a comforting boost from above." - From the book
Spiritual psychologist Doreen Virtue encourages readers to devote a portion of each day to connecting with the angels in the book Daily Guidance from Your Angels: 365 Angelic Messages to Soothe, Heal, and Open Your Heart. Drawing from years of experience as an angel therapist and clairvoyant, she provides 365 specific messages from the angelic realm designed to uplift, inform and inspire.
In her own spiritual practice, Virtue notes that when she has allowed herself to skip an occasional morning of reflection, her day wasn't as fun or satisfying. Desiring to facilitate daily devotions for readers to ensure a magical, fulfilling day, the author provides reflections ranging from profound teachings to beneficial ways to approach the day. These daily meditations aren't dated, so you can begin anywhere, anytime--either reading consecutive meditations or choosing one at random.
Some of the themes in Daily Guidance from Your Angels include:
*Be Gentle With Yourself
*Say Goodbye to Guilt
*Honor Your Agreements
*Bless Your Meals
*Complete Projects
*Turn Around Nervousness
*Know That You're Perfectly Understood By Us
*Detach From Drama
*Connect With the Spirit of Nature
*Enjoy a Sense of Belonging
*Know That You Can Never Ask for Too Much
*Honor Your Sensitivity
*Listen to Your Inner Child
*Expect Everything to Go Well
I've consulted this book at random several times, and I've found each insight rich with liberating, practical wisdom. As one who is often hard on herself, I am especially encouraged by messages dealing with lightening up, the perfection of all, and treating oneself with kindness.
If you're looking for a book offering spiritual nourishment and angelic awareness, Daily Guidance from Your Angels will help you connect with our unseen helpers and bask in their love and support.

When the Hurt Runs Deep: Healing and Hope for Life's Desperate Moments Review

When the Hurt Runs Deep: Healing and Hope for Life's Desperate Moments
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This book was given to review by Waterbrook/Multnomah Press, Blogging for Books.
Noted Bible teacher and Precepts Ministries founder Kay Arthur has written a thought provoking and biblically based work entitled When the Hurt Runs Deep. This book takes a look what it means to suffer, the questions we have we enduring trials, and how the Bible offers answers to our deepest concerns. One of the great aspects of this book was the Healing Truth sections throughout the chapters. This little nuggets of truth distill some key foundational stones which every Christian can hold onto in times of distress. On p.94 the Healing Truth section says, "Wherever you are, whoever you are, whatever you have done, there is hope because there is God. He is a God of hope, redemption is his business." These truths are expounded in the text throughout each chapter.
Secondly, I thought that Kay opened herself up to allow the reader understand that she has been down the road of disappointment before. She tells of her first marriage ending in divorce and the "devastating experience" that was for her and her family (28). Yet, she uses these experiences as a way to relate how God used those times of great grief to bring her to saving faith. Kay goes through the Scriptures in this book to bring the reader great comfort in knowing that the Scripture are full of men and women who knew pain, who walked through the sorrow of defeat and hopelessness. Yet, Kay's message in this book is that hope is not lost, that at the foot of the cross Jesus has dealt with our suffering through his and he is able and willing to strengthen us in our time of great need. The healing truths at the end of the book remind the reader God is in the midst of our pain, that he loves us regardless even to the point of using pain to drive us to him. I enjoyed this book very much and would pass it along to a friend in need of some encouraging words.
The chapter on the benefits of suffering was particularly illuminating. Why? Kay says that suffering reveals our true status and disciplines us. I certainly was not ready to hear those words as I read them. Yet, as I begin to look more closely at the heart of her message, I think she is right. Suffering causes the Christian to open his eyes to the idols of his heart and the ways in which our faith sometimes dwindles because we don't always get what we think we need. Secondly, many times we are left wondering what purpose did suffering have in our lives. God teaches us to trust him more and more in suffering, to let go of the strangleholds in our lives and follow him. This is a book for every believer who goes through trials and hurts.

Choosing Happiness: Life and Soul Essentials Review

Choosing Happiness: Life and Soul Essentials
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Happiness is a by-product of how thoughtful and generous your own choices are! Current research has proven that the happiest people in all societies including this one are the people who have relative peace of mind and are above all generous and good-humored. This book lives up to its claim that making relatively simple changes in the way you look at your own choices and then actually behave will make an immediate and significant difference. This is a book for people who want to take charge of the way they are living. In a very crowded marketplace it is surprisingly difficult to find books that are both intelligent and uncluttered. This one is certainly about happiness but it gets straight to the point that it is not other people or more "things" or more money that will make a lasting difference, but rather a willingness to see what works and what doesn't. Do more of what is going well; do less of what's making you or someone else unhappy. Sounds as though we should all know that, yet over and over again we do the same things that have already caused us problems. I am a practicing therapist and know that it is not education or high intelligence that makes the difference - it is a willingness to learn from experience and to value what you can do and give. There are lots of great "experience" stories here to help make the insights come to life. This book is beautifully set out and could be read by first-timers to this kind of writing as well as much more sophisticated readers. The author has a spiritual outlook that reflects the Dalai Lama's ("My religion is kindness"). A kinder life is a happier one. She leaves us in no doubt that this is possible and achievable.

Love, Medicine and Miracles: Lessons Learned about Self-Healing from a Surgeon's Experience with Exceptional Patients

This book is an upbeat, positive approach and plan in dealing with any life altering diagosis. A perfect gift of hope and love for the patient, the patient's family, friends or yourself.
If medical treatment is already underway there may be a recognizable need to give a gentle reminder to a physician or healthcare giver that TenderLovingCare in the treatment of a patient is needed and expected. . (Perhaps, there is only a wish by you to thank the doctor for TLC already given), Love,Medicine and Miracles is a perfect gift; a perfect venue. Dr. Seigel's book makes the point and serves as a definitive reminder of the significance of LOVE, MEDICNE and MIRACLES in rendering treatment to a patient.
The book was recommended to me when my husband was diagnosed with a catistrophic cancer;cholangio carcinoma, by a cancer patient who twice had cancers go into remission. Since, that time it has been a favorite gift for those who need positive encouragement; those awaiting, or who have received a frightening dignosis. How difficult it is to know what to say to help. I find that the gift of this book, LOVE, MEDICINE and MIRACLES provides the positive message of love and caring that I want for my family and friends. Dr. Siegel says it so much better than a just a bouquet of flowers would.
During the many weeks of hospital time and treatment that my husband unerwent I realized THIS BOOK SHOULD BE REQUIRED READING FOR EVERY DOCTOR, NURSE and CAREGIVER. It is down to earth and forthright in the information, suggestions and examples given; truly a bright light in what is often a dark tunnel.

The stories in A Bridge Called Hope are all true. Some are funny, many are heartbreaking, but hope is present throughout. As abused horses and damaged kids discover each other through their common pain, special relationships are forged and the baby steps toward wholeness begin.

Cross Over Troubled WatersHope is like the stars—always there, yet shining brightest in the blackest of nights. It is like the dawn, always rising anew. Hope is for everyone, and that includes you. This collection of more than twenty true stories from a ranch of rescued dreams unveils the heart of true strength and the character of genuine courage. Experience for yourself the kind of love and hope that change a person from the inside out. Because sometimes, just believing in someone is enough for them to start believing in themselves. It's the galvanizing truth that no matter how deep your pain…God's love exceeds it still. Sometimes, just believing in someone is enough for them to start believing in themselves… Without raising his eyes to look at me, in a voice barely clearing the horizon of a whisper, he said, "I know you don't love me… You just say that 'cuz you're an adult and it's kinda like your job. But I know you don't really love me."Suffering and blessing balance on the same high wire, each giving stability and depth to the other. The one that we feel the most…is ultimately the one that we give the most. It was her eyes that gave her away. The conflict of her mortal illness versus her will raged behind them. Her body shouted, "I'm sick and it's getting harder and harder to do the things I love!" while her indomitable will shouted back, "Yeah, but I'm just a little kid, and little kids should get to ride horses!"What a relief it is when we begin to understand that it is within our hardships that truth is elevated from our hearts to our heads. "During the darkest days I'd ever known, I was introduced to the unconditional love of a little horse and a merciful God, and my life has never been the same," says author Kim Meeder . And her book proves that hope is not only for us to keep…but to give."Stirring, encouraging, and inspirational, Bridge Called Hope reminds us that hope is heaven sent for everyone, and that we, too, can make a positive difference in others' lives."Eric CloseActor "Kim Meeder vibrantly shares—and lives—an amazing story of hope and restoration. A triumph of recovery for wounded hearts!"Louie GiglioDirector, Passion Conferences, and bestselling authorStory Behind the Book"I was moved to write Hope Rising and Bridge Called Hope because, when I needed it the most, someone shared hope with me and it saved my life. During the darkest days I'd ever known, I was introduced to the unconditional love of a little horse and a merciful God, and my life has never been the same. Everything in our life is about choices. We cannot control our circumstances, but we can control how we choose to feel about them. The pain that we feel in this life is certain. What is equally certain is how we choose to feel about the pain. It can destroy us—or it can define us. The choice is uniquely ours." —Kim Meeder

From Wild Man to Wise Man: Reflections on Male Spirituality Review

From Wild Man to Wise Man: Reflections on Male Spirituality
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Richard Rohr begins this revision of "The Wild Man's Journey" by defining God as "wild" in that God does not operate under human rules. God is free, that is, no matter what men do, God is "always the initiator, always good, always available." Men whose lives are based on performance and exercise of control are powerless before such wildness. Rohr pursues the theme with examples from scripture. The story of Abraham, for example, "has nothing to do with order, certitude, clarity, reason, logic, church authority, or merit. This is an utterly free God trying to create a spiritually free people." Additional topics include men's liberation, masculine and feminine spirituality, neither of which is exclusive to one gender; wild male saints; father hunger; male grief; and the powerful powerlessness of God. The appendix offers a structure for a men's group.
Though this work is written primarily for men, it has much to say to anyone who aspires to a deeper relationship with God.
