Absolutely Normal Chaos (rpkg) Review

I remember when I got this book in my Easter basket two years ago. I picked it up, and didn't stop reading until I was finished. Since then I've read it about 65 times, and I still read it almost every day. "Absolutely Normal Chaos" led me to read "The Odyssey," which is another one of my favourites, and I've also taken up Mary Lou's expressions such as Omnipotent, cabbageheaded and all that other sum and substance. It is also my inspiration for journaling. I recommend "Absolutely Normal" to absolutely everyone I meet. And they all tell me I'm exactly like Mary Lou... har har har. Anyway, I guess I should go ahead and review the book.
Absolutely Normal Chaos is about a 13-year-old girl named Mary Lou Finney who is assigned by her English teacher, Mrs. Zollar, to keep a journal over the summer. Mary Lou has no idea what a journal really is, so she decides to just write away and hope she's doing it right. Over the summer, Mary Lou's cousin, Carl Ray, comes to stay with her family. She also becomes involved with Alex Cheevey, a boy from school. What happens next is an odyssey in itself, and I don't want to give away the ending to this wonderful book.
For my final sentence, two words: READ IT!

Dog Heaven Review

If you've ever cried over the death of a pet, you need this book. Cynthia Rylant offers comfort for any grieving pet owner, no matter what his age.
"When dogs go to heaven, they don't need wings because God knows that dogs love running best." From that simple beginning, this book paints a picture of a place filled with canine joys. There are good-natured geese to bark at, angel children to play with, and dog biscuits to munch. Even strays have wonderful homes and lots of love in dog heaven.
It's been over twenty years since I lost my first and favorite dog, and I identified with this book as if the loss had been yesterday. I can't think of a better way to say farewell to a good and faithful friend than to share this book as a memorial.

Gateways to the Otherworld: The Secrets Beyond the Final Journey, from the Egyptian Underworld to the Gates in the Sky Review

Gateways to the Otherworld: The Secrets Beyond the Final Journey, from the Egyptian Underworld to the Gates in the Sky

We've all wondered if there really is life after death. We've all wondered if there is life that we can't see, souls among us that are not visible to our eyes but felt in our heart.
This book examines these and other subjects. It examines ESP. It looks at the Pryamids. But what I found most fascinating was that the book makes the argument that ancient man was much more aware and attuned to the world than we heretofore believed. They knew "their place in the universe."
The book looks into many mysterious issues that people from the beginning have wondered about.
The book is easy to read and well structured. It provides what could be considered a good deal of evidence.
Whether you end out believing or not, this book is well worth reading.
Highly recommended.

Is there life after death? Is there a world outside our own?Mankind has wrestled with these profound questions for as long as there has been consciouness. Gateways to the Otherworld reveals that ancient man already knew the answers.Acclaimed author Philip Gardiner proves that our ancestors were far more advanced--scientifically and spiritually--than previously believed. Through a special technique, ancient Egyptians and others were able to journey to other realities within themselves--in short, to the Otherworld. The author undergoes his own experiments to prove the point.Gardiner makes us consider the fact that ancient man also knew more about his place in the universe than previously thought. He placed buildings and objects in specific places around the globe. Why? Because at these points he had discovered areas where lines of energy cross--points with distinct relation to the universal and human wave resonance of electromagnetism. When man journeyed to these places, he was joining with God and visualising the effect. The remarkable conclusions and discoveries in this book not only dispel some age-old myths, but also address questions such as:*Is there a universal frequency that allows the mind to travel into other realms? *How does this relate to the holographic universe and the concept of quantum entanglement?*Does the Great Pyramid hold a real secret to the quantum realm?*What are those mysterious round towers found scattered around our planet?*Is there an answer to the phenomena of earth energies?*What is the truth behind the Crystal Skulls and the rods of power? *Is ESP real? What Gateways to the Otherworld uncovers are not just tales of ancient trips to other realms, nor theories on why stone circles were built in specific locations, but real answers based on thorough research and science.

What a witty and clever fellow this Ed Bergin is to have put together such a unique collection of funny funeral-related stories, headstone epitaphs, and quotes about death. While death isn't a laughing matter, this book proves that funny things happen when you're dealing with people, dead or alive. It's great to see that funeral professionals working under the most stressful conditions have occasional reasons to laugh. If you have an advanced sense of humor, you will appreciate this book. It's not for stiffs.

"Edmund Gwenn, the famous actor, observed 'Dying is easy. Comedy is difficult.'Well, any comic will tell you, comedy about dying is really hard. But necessary. For what greater triumph of the human spirit exists than to defiantly mock the grinning reaper, specter of our darkest fears?'Hey Death--is that a sickle in your hand or are you just glad to see me?'" -- by Anita Wise, stand up comedian/writer who has appeared on the "Tonight Show" and "Seinfeld."That passage from the Foreword of the book "The Definitive Guide To Underground Humor" sets the stage by capturing the morbidly amusing essence of the succeeding pages. This book dares to explore the comical depths of death and the black humor hidden deep within us all, featuring: Quaint Quotes About Death from such people as Robin Williams, Woody Allen, Johnny Carson, Dennis Miller & Anita Wise; Funny Funeral Home Stories from anonymous funeral directors, embalmers, pall bearers, limo drivers and others who work in the funeral service industry; Hilarious Headstone Epitaphs from graveyards in different parts of the world; and Funeral-Flavored Comics from Non Sequitur & The Wizard of Id.And who better to unearth this type of humor than someone with 122years of service in the funeral industry in his genes.Author EdwardBergin's family has owned and/or operated funeral homes in Connecticutsince the 1800s.To those of you who might be uneasy about the idea of a book that deals with the lighter side of death, Anita Wise offers the following for you to ponder: "We enter the world crying, isn't it only fitting to leave it laughing? After all, death is not the final exit, but only a revolving door."

Mr. Orlev's charaters are fully drawn, and his writing is superb. Marek is a young Pole, living with his mother and stepfather. He is an observant Catholic in a very anti-semetic society. Although he has never had a friendship or any relationship with a Jew, he is certain that they are bad people who deserve whatever harm comes their way. On acompanying his step-father through the Warsaw sewers into the Ghetto, he comes to see that they are quite normal. His anti-semetic feelings continue until his mother reveals things he didn't know about himself. In trying to make restitution for harm he caused for Jews, Marek helps a Jewish man. He finds that it is not always reliable to believe everything you are taught, and people are different but human.

23 Minutes In Hell: One Man's Story About What He Saw, Heard, and Felt in that Place of Torment Review

23 Minutes In Hell: One Man's Story About What He Saw, Heard, and Felt in that Place of Torment
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
With a heavy heart, I must give an honest review of this book. Before I begin, I want to start off by stating upfront that I am a born-again Christian, and I do believe that unbelievers who die without Christ will suffer eternal torment in Hell. However, with this said, I must say that I do not believe Bill Wiese' account.
I had heard about this book for quite some time before I had actually read it. At first I thought this was going to be a story about a man who wasn't a Christian, clinically died and went to Hell, came back to life and is now a Christian. Instead, I was surprised to find out that not only was Wiese already supposed to have been a Christian, but he didn't even die. Instead, he just went to bed at 3:00a.m. one night, fell into a pit and ended up in literal Hell. In this Hell he was tormented by demons, heat so intense that he should have been dead, and he witnessed a pit of fire where souls were being tormented. During his time in Hell, Wiese claims that he didn't know about God and had "forgotten" he was a Christian. He later supposedly gets rescued by Jesus and is told that he was purposely made to forget that he was a Christian. The entire reasoning behind this experience is so that Wiese can know that Hell exists and he can now tell others about it. He wakes back up in his living room where he fell asleep at 3:23a.m.
Right away, one would think that Wiese just had a nightmare, but Wiese is convinced that he had an out-of-body experience where his soul literally descended into Hell. Wiese insists that this wasn't just a dream.
This is all told in the first three chapters of the book, and the rest of the book is simply accounts of Wiese' evangelistic testimonies and answering a few questions about Hell. But the first three chapters are really the "highlight" of the book. In fact, I found myself getting bored after the third chapter, because the rest of it becomes testimonies of Wiese being invited to speak about his experience, and then the book going into answering standard philosophical questions about Hell that can be found in many other books.
The main problem I have with Bill Wiese' story is that it just simply isn't consistent with what the Bible teaches about how God operates. One of the claims Wiese says in his book is that God made him forget that he was a Christian while he was in Hell. On the contrary, the Bible teaches that God cannot lie, and therefore, I don't see how God would make Wiese "forget" that he is a Christian.
Also, in Luke 16:19-31 Jesus tells a story about a rich man who dies and ends up in Hell. The rich man becomes concerned that his family might end up in Hell too. So he asks if he can go and tell his family about Hell. And the response he received was, "If they do not listen to Moses and the Prophets, they will not be persuaded even if someone rises from the dead" (v. 31). So, knowing that Jesus told his story of the rich man, and the bible teaches that if someone isn't persuaded by the Scriptures, then they will not be persuaded by someone returning from the dead, why would Jesus send Wiese to Hell to basically do what Jesus himself says won't persuade unbelievers anymore than the Scriptures will? The simple answer is, Jesus wouldn't do that.
Another problem I have with Wiese's account is that Jesus said that anyone who believes in him will not see death (John 8:51).
After reading the book, I must admit that I am really disappointed. And while I am a born-again Christian who believes in the existence of Hell (and by that I mean eternal punishment, not annihilation), I must tell the truth of what I believe about this book. I had thought about not writing a review at all, but Christians need to stand on biblical truths, not lies. I'm still not even sure why Wiese is so convinced that he didn't just have a really bad dream... which is what I think he had if he's not just making this whole thing up.

"My sincere hope is that this book is the closest you will ever come to experiencing hell for yourself"--Bill Wiese saw the searing flames of hell, felt total isolation, and experienced the putrid and rotting stench, deafening screams of agony, terrorizing demons, and finally, the strong hand of God lifting him out of the pit--"Tell them I am coming very, very soon!"Wiese's visit to the devil's lair lasted just twenty-three minutes, but he returned with vivid details etched in his memory. Since this life-changing ordeal, he has spent the last seven years studying the Scriptures to find answers and has listed more than 150 Bible verses referencing hell.Everyone is curious about the afterlife, and now Wiese shares his insights to commonly asked questions such as:
Is hell a literal burning place?
Where is hell?
Do you have a body in hell?
Are there Degrees of punishment in hell?
Are there children in hell?
Can Demons torment people in hell?
Can "good" people go to hell?
"Even if you don't believe my story, I hope you will believe the Scriptures and avoid hell just the same."
