I got this book for my 10 year old son for his study of Ancient Rome. What a wonderful book. It has the depth of an adult book, yet is written at a young person's level. The Latin and Greek roots and primary source quotes are an added bonus.

Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants (Sisterhood of Traveling Pants, Book 1) Review

Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants (Sisterhood of Traveling Pants, Book 1)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
With a new twist, this coming-of-age novel steals the genre for me. Ann Brashares takes us on a magical ride with the Traveling Pants and the best friends who comprise the sisterhood. Each girl experiences a different, new, aspect of life and their personality during their first summer apart in their lives. With each page, you will become closer to these girls, as they grow and begin to understand the world, and themselves.
The novel is brilliantly narrated, each girl developing a real human personality. These characters are not the 2-D characters often found in novels of this genre. Ann Brashares develops them so thoroughly, at least one of these girls rings incredibly true to my own adolescence.
Not only are they well-developed, and human, Brashares doesn't give them more wisdom than any other fifteen-year-olds would have. The characters un-annoyingly live their lives as real teenagers, and delve into human emotions that all women have experienced at some point.
If you are looking for a light read, with some underlying, and truly deeper characteristics, The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants is definitely one to invest in. Each girl will find her way into your heart, and possibly show you something you never knew was there.

The Girl in the Red Coat Review

The Girl in the Red Coat
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
While I still don't know why some people survived the Holocaust and others didn't, I do know why Roma Ligocka survived: she provides testimony.
Her story begins as a toddler tells her tale of fear in the Krakow Ghetto. Scarcely more than an infant when the Jews were forced to wear Jewish stars on their clothing, she absolutely knew no other way of life. When an aunt said that she'd have men at her feet because of her beauty, she wondered if they'd be dead; that's what she knew.
She watched the snatching of her grandmother before her very eyes, as she hid under a table. Her father was forced to go to Auschwitz. Her mother begged for places for them to stay throughout the war.
The first half of the book deals with Roma's life before the end of the war. The second half deals with her life after the war: how events, seemingly minor, during the war, left permanent scars in her mind.
While this memoir deals with topics such as depression and post-traumatic stress disorder, failed marriages, show business, prejudice, and addiction, this is not a book ABOUT those topics. This is a book about a woman who saw "Schindler's List" and recognized herself and her family as subjects, and who had the courage to reflect, document, and move on. This is a story of survival.

An easy, wonderful read. Doesn't take much time to read the book ... but if used as a workbook or life motivator if could take a long time to apply the very good, yet simple, princples Dhanam shares. He uses real life experiences he has seen and lived to share the blessings of living in this wonderful country called the United States. And at the same time uses those same examples to point out how much the average American takes for granted!

A Man Called Peter: The Story of Peter Marshall Review

A Man Called Peter: The Story of Peter Marshall

The description of Peter's passing is alone worth the price of this book. Catherine (wife) tells how she sat quietly by his body, draped and covered on the hospital bed, and became aware that his presence and another presence was there in the room with her, which she describes as "vivid" and "transcendent". After precisely 50 minutes, the luminous presences left the room.
You gotta read this book. His sermons are in the back. These too, are very inspiring.

In the Preface to A Man Called Peter, Catherine Marshall tells of a dream she had after Peter Marshall's death: Peter was working in a rose garden and said playfully, "I know perfectly well what you've been doing, Catherine. You're writing a book. . . . It's all right, Kate. Go ahead and write it. Tell it all, if it will prove to people that a man can love the Lord and not be a sissy. . . ." Filled with wonderful humor, wisdom, and loving detail, the powerful story of Peter Marshall's life has touched the hearts and minds of millions of people. It is a book about love--the love between a dynamic man and his God, and the tender, romantic love between a man and the woman he married. It is also the gripping adventure of a poor Scottish immigrant who became Chaplain of the United States Senate and one of the most revered men in America. Through Peter's story and the powerful sermons and prayers included in this paperback edition, readers will discover insight into God, man, and life on earth and hereafter. They will also be encouraged by the realization that if God can do so much for a man called Peter, he can do as much for them.

For students or admirers of life drawing, this book is an inspiration! The style is loose, fresh and spontaneous. The beautiful art works on each page take us from drawings to watercolors, from portraits to abstraction. Lew explores a wide variety of approaches to color, light and shape.
The book is pure pleasure to look at, and offers advice and inspiration for those trying to capture on paper or canvass the challenging, exhilarating subject of the human form.
Like Charles Reid's figure paintings and Mel Stabin's The Figure in Watercolor, this book belongs on the bookshelf of artists who eschew photorealism and prefer the fast, fresh approach.

Painting from Life: Explorations in Watercolor chronicles the progression of artist Douglas Lew as he takes on the most eternal and challenging of themes: the nude. Working side-by-side with other artists in the context of life-drawing sessions, Lew struck out on his own heightened pace of exploration as he grappled with the ultimate problem: How to draw and paint a nude model accurately and expressively within the time limits of single pose, which were sometimes as short as five or ten minutes. Having started with single line drawings, Lew soon realized he could use watercolor to render volume more quickly. He then began to build paintings, sorting out composition, light, shapes, and color as he worked. Once he mastered the nude, Lew sought to be freed from it: In a delightful game of hide-and-seek he created seductive abstractions, leaving parts of the figure visible. At the heart of the book are Lew's remarkable figure drawings and paintings.

How Math Explains the World: A Guide to the Power of Numbers, from Car Repair to Modern Physics
Average Reviews:

It is made abundantly clear in this fascinating book that certain sub-disciplines in mathematics are extremely useful in describing the physical world in which we live. It is made equally clear, and admitted by the author, that many other of its sub-disciplines are (at least currently) completely useless in the sense that there are no known practical applications. The author, a mathematician, does an excellent job in providing the reader with an overview of both types of these sub-disciplines, while discussing various questions and issues in mathematics. To add a human element to these discussions, the author has peppered the text with many historical and micro-biographical snippets, as well as personal anecdotes - thus making the book all the more enjoyable. The writing style is authoritative, very friendly and generally clear; that is, some sections could have been made clearer if figures or diagrams had been included to complement the descriptions that are given, thus saving the reader a bit of re-reading and head scratching (such as in my case). The fact that many mathematical terms are used without being previously defined suggests that the reader should have some basic knowledge in math in order to better appreciate the topics being discussed. Consequently, the book would likely be most enjoyed by science and especially math buffs.

The religious beliefs and church preferences of America's presidents have always been a topic of great interest and, indeed, have in recent history played a critical role in their electability to the nation's highest office. It is assumed that all the presidents have been practising religionists. But is this true? In this exhaustively researched history of the religious beliefs of America's first thirty-two presidents, from George Washington to Franklin Delano Roosevelt, Franklin Steiner organises his chapters not chronologically but by religious affiliation. Thus we learn that Washington was not a regular church attendant, that Jefferson and Lincoln were freethinkers, and that another half dozen presidents were of 'doubtful' religious belief. Appendices include 'Washington's Last Sickness and Death' and 'Religious Opinions and Habits of Washington'.

Average Reviews:

Raymond Mansour Scurfield takes the reader through an account of pyschiatric casualties of the Vietnam war that is unlike any other book on the era that I've ever read. This is not simply a tale of the horrors of the war...though they are illustrated throughout...but is a first-hand view from one who worked in-country with psychiatric cases and who has continued that work for nearly 40 years with veterans of the war. His experience is invaluable and is presented in a style that is engaging and understandable.
What makes the book indispensable is the door it opens into the mind of the trauma survivor. This is not a book that is theoretical in nature, though its foundations are clearly theoretically sound. Rather, it is an eyewitness journey with practical insight from one who is not only a keen observer of his surroundings, but a renowned clinician with an extraordinary mind.
If you are a survivor, if you live with or know a survivor, or if you work with PTSD survivors, this is a must read. Don't wait to order it. Get it now and read it NOW!

An internationally recognized expert on war and post-traumatic stress therapy analyzes the Vietnam War s psychological and social impact and the implications for today s veterans through the lens of his service in 1968 and two return visits in 1989 and 2000.Through the stories of veterans and the author s own understanding as a psychiatric social work officer in Vietnam and his extensive post-war experiences as a mental health professional, A Vietnam Trilogy describes the impact of war on veterans from a psychiatric, psychological, social and cultural perspective, both during and decades after the war. The large numbers of psychiatric casualties from war used to be attributed to an underlying psychiatric disorder presenting the classic blame-the-victim scenario. When they were finally classified as what is now known as PTSD (post-traumatic stress disorder), the path was opened for more realistic and fruitful healing techniques. A Vietnam Trilogy describes a care-giver s and numerous veteransperspectives of what happens to combatants during war, the therapeutic processes fostered by an innovative Dept. of Veteran Affairs treatment program directed by Dr. Scurfield, and the pioneering return trips he co-led to peace-time Vietnam in 1989 and 2000. This book offers a unique vicarious journey of healing and pathos by relating the experiences of those who participated in these therapeutic efforts. For families, care-givers, students and teachers of history, and others, the book offers a glimpse from the participantsview of the shock, the horrors, the overwhelming stress, and the mindset that were so damaging to personnel in the war zone, as well as of the extraordinary courage and strength necessary to survive. Finally, it offers insight into creative therapeutic approaches and recommendations for veterans and those who wish to help them recover from the traumas of war. Volume 1,"A Vietnam Trilogy. Veterans and Post-Traumatic Stress, 1968, 1989 and 2000", describes the healing processes of hundreds of veterans from Vietnam and earlier wars up until 1990, when the author co-led a group of veterans on a therapeutic trip back to Vietnam toface their demons. The second volume, "Healing Journeys," continues from 1990 to 2000 (including a discussion of the impact of the first Gulf War on veterans of earlier wars) and a second return trip to Vietnam in 2000, as part of a university Study Abroad program, to help veterans in their healing process. Volume 3, "War Trauma, Lessons Unlearned From Vietnam to Iraq" (Algora, fall 2006), completes the Trilogy with a consideration of the experience of prior wars to help people who are now in the military or in the healing professions, and their families and communities, to deal with today s realities of combat and its aftermath.

Catholics and the New Age: How Good People Are Being Drawn Into Jungian Psychology, the Enneagram, and the Age of Aquarius

Pacwa, a Jesuit priest, gives a balanced and systematic treatment of the New Age movement. There are no emotional tirades and scathing attacks. This book is rigorous and scholarly (includes endnotes, a glossary and bibliography) yet very readable. He gives the history and logical arguments against these practices. This book is not just a good read. It's also good to give away to those who need it and good as a reference as well.
Pacwa exposes the roots of New Age infiltration into the Catholic Church. It's a controversial topic but he makes it pretty clear that using something like the Enneagram (a typology purporting that there are 9 types of characters) just doesn't square with being Catholic. Seen in the light of Tradition and Scripture, which Fr. Pacwa makes reference to, this and all New Age practices are dubious at best and diabolical at worst.

Lessons From the Field: Applying Appreciative Inquiry (Revised Edition)

It is rare that we would describe a business book as beautiful, but this one truly is. Not only is the artwork subtle and well integrated to contribute to the physical beauty of this book, there is beauty in each story or lesson. You will find well written, detailed case studies on the application and success of Appreciative Inquiry in settings ranging from schools to communities to entire nations. The how-do portions of the book are powerfully written yet easy to understand (in contrast to some of the more academic works on this subject).
My favorite 'lesson' comes from Father Greg Banaga and relates the principles of Ai to the teachings in the Bible. Just one example of the uplifting nature of this book and the ennate quality of the Appreciative Inquiry Process. Buy it for its practical, informative text, love it for its depth and beauty.

Introducing HTML5 (Voices That Matter) Review

Introducing HTML5 (Voices That Matter)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
HTML5 is creating more and more a name for itself in our industry, but while it excites those on the cutting edge of web technology, many are left feeling uncertain about it. Its ongoing development has been victim of politics, fragmentation and more, leaving few to have a good grasp of its current status. However, a lot of the technologies that make up HTML5 (and more) have become mature, even implemented across all the latest browsers--but did you know that? If you've kept an arms length to everything going on with HTML5, now is the time to dive into its waters and explore.
Fortunately, you don't have to do it all by yourself: just get Introducing HTML5, written by Bruce Lawson (Opera) and Remy Sharp (Left Logic).
Exactly as its name implies, Introducing HTML5 is an introduction to all the new semantics and application-oriented technologies that make up the HTML5 spec. You don't have to be a web development expert to read this, but you'll come out closer to one when you've finished. All you need is a good grasp of web standards-based techniques, e.g. semantic markup; separation of structure, presentation and behavior; and accessibility. Bruce and Remy will teach you everything you need to know to bring your skill set to the next level.
Starting out light, Introducing HTML5 first teaches you the most important new HTML5 elements and their semantic purposes, which is especially helpful if, like me, you kept an eye on these since the early stages of HTML5, but got confused as their meanings were changed or redefined.
The book continues with the new HTML5 Forms, serving as a nice segue into the more JavaScript-reliant HTML5 Audio and Video, before it hunkers down on the real new technologies in HTML5, starting with Canvas and going all the way to the Messages, Web Workers and Web Sockets APIs.
Throughout the book, Bruce and Remy do a great job at not just introducing the new technologies, but informing you exactly of what does and doesn't work in which browsers. Even the latest releases of browsers have some glaring bugs here and there, but where fixes are available, they are presented, and where not, workarounds explained. As a result, Introducing HTML5 is a tremendously practical book, going well beyond a surface-level introduction and straight-up teaching you how to wield these new technologies today.
One thing I am personally very happy about is how the book teaches you how to implement things in an accessible way (via ARIA or otherwise), making sure that visitors to your sites aren't left out. HTML5 is exciting, but our excitement shouldn't come at the cost of accessibility--and following Bruce and Remy's advice, it won't.
The compact but dense information in Introducing HTML5 means that in just an afternoon or two, you'll find yourself brimming with new knowledge, excitement and ideas for making your websites or web applications richer, more exciting and more powerful. All in all, a highly recommended read.

The Blue Book of Grammar and Punctuation: An Easy-to-Use Guide with Clear Rules, Real-World Examples, and Reproducible Quizzes
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have been an English professor for fifteen years, and my advice is that people interested in improving their grammar find a better book than this one. It is full of errors. I care very much about getting students to write and speak properly (for many it's a key to success), and that's why I am so disappointed in this book. (By the way, I have not written any book that competes with this one for your dollars.) Better material is available free of charge on the internet.
I will list some errors below, all found in the very first section of the book, and you will note that in all the canned testimonials that appear on this site, not one of my statements will be refuted. Instead, you will hear about how this book "answered all of my questions" or "helped me land my dream job" or "turned my company around," etc. Nonsense.
ERROR 1: On page 2 we are told, "A subject will come before a phrase beginning with 'of'." This is simply not a rule; subjects often follow "of". Consider this sentence: "Hoping to win the respect of her employer, Sandra learned to speak fluent English." The subject, Sandra, comes after a phrase beginning with "of" ("of her employer"), not before one. Someone who followed the rule in the book might falsely conclude that "respect" is the subject, as it comes before "of".
ERROR 2: There are grammar and punctuation errors in the writing itself. On page 1 we read, "Being able to identify the subject and verb correctly will also help you with commas and semicolons as you will see later." It is certainly odd that a sentence about proper punctuation should itself include a punctuation error; a mandatory comma has been omitted between "semicolons" and "as."
ERROR 3: On page 2 we are told, most unhelpfully, "To find the subject and verb, always find the verb first." (This is like a recipe that says, "To bake a cake and make frosting for it, first bake the cake," and leaves its instructions on cake-baking at that.) Once you find the verb, the book continues, "Then ask who or what performed the verb." This sloppy wording is almost bound to cause confusion. Consider this sentence: "In spite of the bad instructions, the error was found by the student." The verb is "was found," and the student did the finding. It would be natural to suppose, then, that the student "performed the verb" and thus is the subject. The subject, however, is "the error," not "the student".
All of these problems (and others I have not mentioned) are found on the first two pages of the book.
Please note that no one promoting this book will defend the idea that subjects must precede phrases beginning with "of," or that finding "who performed the verb" gives students enough to go on to determine the subject, or that the author makes no punctuation errors of her own in the book. They as good as admit that some of the rules in the book are wrong, that the explanations are inadequate, and that the author makes punctuation errors. So one wonders what might motivate these people to endorse the book. As for my motive, it is this: concern for students who will be (and have been) misled by this faulty product.
The previous edition used crucial terms that it did not bother to define--like "direct object," "object of the preposition," and even "preposition" itself.
Imagine a grammar book that leaves students in the dark about the meaning of the word "preposition," and you have some idea of what this book is like.
As for crucial grammatical elements like transitive verbs, the subjunctive, linking verbs, helping verbs--they were not even mentioned. Will anyone step forward and say, "In this edition, 'preposition' is defined and transitive verbs are discussed"? Of course not.
This book omits even very basic material, and, what is worse, much of what it does say is misleadingly phrased or just plain wrong. You can do better.

SCIENCE FICTION SECRETS: From Government Files and the Paranormal Review

SCIENCE FICTION SECRETS: From Government Files and the Paranormal
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have to start by saying how immensely I enjoyed this book. Having skipped out of town for a "last ditch" retreat to the Isle of Palms off the coast of sunny South Carolina, I enjoyed this book in between jogs on the beach and the occasional swim. Cuba Libre' and cigar in hand, I lounged by the pool under a palm tree as I enjoyed this page-turner; and let me be frank, there's no better way to describe this book.
Nick Redfern's Science Fiction Secrets From Government Files and the Paranormal is one of my favorite new offerings from Britain's finest Gonzo journalist of paranormalia. From strange FBI tales involving the apparent paranoia of Sci-Fi writers like Phillip K. Dick, to weird parallels he draws between the terrorist attacks of 9-11 and television programs that predicted the disaster before it happened, this book is a mind bender in the first degree, and will leave you wondering how soon Anomalist Books will be asking for "round two."
One of my favorite chapters deals with Ray Palmer, a fascinating little dwarf who published the Sci-Fi pulp magazine Amazing Stories back in the late '30s and into the '40's. Palmer was perhaps known best for his publication of the long running and controversial "Shaver Mystery" stories, based on accounts (allegedly true in some capacity) related by a machine welder turned "psychic" named Richard S. Shaver. Palmer's support of the truth of Shaver's stories, which dealt with notions that the world is controlled subversively by wicket, inbred inhabitants of the hollow earth called Deros, was controversial in the science fiction community. Many felt Palmer published the stories because of the literal "shock value", although readers soon flooded the mailbox of Amazing Stories after the initial publication of Shaver's offerings, spinning their own yarns of assault and capture by real-life Deros from underground worlds.
Redfern brilliantly unveils a variety of parallels regarding Palmer's involvement in lapsing the realms of Sci Fi and reality, as well as the likes of Issac Assimov, and Arthur C. Clark. Rocket scientist Jack Parsons comes into question, as well as the infamous Roswell UFO crash of 1947. The old adage "truth is stranger than fiction" comes to mind often when reading this gem, and if you ever doubted it, this will be the manuscript that will finally change that perception. Read it, enjoy it, and be prepared to never see the world around you quite the same way you once did.

ALL THE INGREDIENTS FOR A HIGH STRANGENESS STEWMix two parts science fiction with one part high-level government secrecy. Add a liberal helping of the paranormal. Then let Nick Redfern heat and serve. The result is far, far stranger than anything that you could ever begin to imagine. SCIENCE FICTION SECRETS presents some mind-bending answers to a number of highly intriguing and thought-provoking questions, including:-- Did the U.S. Government secretly assist Steven Spielberg in the production of his groundbreaking science fiction movies "Close Encounters of the Third Kind" and "E.T.: The Extra Terrestrial"?-- Why were special agents of the FBI so deeply interested in the life, career, and activities of science fiction author Philip K. Dick (of "Blade Runner" fame)?-- How did "The X-Files" spin-off series "The Lone Gunmen" anticipate months in advance the terrible tragedy of 9-11?-- Why was the top brass of the U.S. Air Force so secretly interested in, and concerned by, the UFO-related tales of a relatively anonymous 1950s science fiction movie-maker who died in poverty in the early 1980s?-- Did a nightmarish scenario presented in one of H.G. Wells' novels prompt Soviet Premier Josef Stalin to clandestinely embark upon a secret and diabolical experiment designed to create a super race of monstrous, half-human half-ape soldiers?-- Has the military managed to successfully perfect human teleportation of the type that was most graphically and famously shown in "Star Trek" and "The Fly"?

As the co-author of this book, I have to thank the amazing story contributors who wrote deep and moving stories about their journey through breast cancer in order to help those who have been newly diagnosed, their families and friends. This book would not have been possible without their courage, strength, and humor. Yes, there are a lot of funny stories in here too.
