Confessions of a Former Bully Review

Loved it.
Confessions of a Former Bully, honestly, should be read by every kid, and every teacher in grade school, and discussed at length. I am a former teacher and this is the most insightful book you will ever read on this topic. This is a book written by Katie, a former bully, about what she used to do/say to other kids to bully them. Her character arc from the beginning of the book until the end, what she learns about herself, what she learns about bullying and the impact it has on her and other kids, and how she changes her attitude and behaviors are perfect for class discussions. So many kids will see themselves, in different places, all over this book. Some might see themselves as bullies, others might see themselves as being bullied - or both, but it gives the kids insight, this incredible insight, as to who they are, and how their actions, positive and negative, impact others. Plus, Ludwig has put in Quick Facts about bullying, quotes from famous people, "what to do" types of advice, "tool belts" for dealing with bullies, and what good friends and bad friends look like. It's a story - but then there's all the practical stuff in there, too, about bullying. Can I say it this way? It's an awesome - excellent book.

Models Don't Eat Chocolate Cookies Review

I really enjoyed this book. Maybe it's because I have a soft spot for overweight young girls being as that was me in middle school and high school. I thought Dionne handled the weight issue very well showing that while eating healthy and exercising can help you lose weight what is really important is how you feel about yourself. Celeste was a loveable character who you have to feel sorry for as she is picked on by by the "popular" kids and abandoned by her best friend. This story was a nice mix of humor, discovering what is really important in friendships and most of all being confident in yourself no matter how you feel you may look.

Frog and Toad Are Friends (I Can Read Book 2) Review

I purchased this for our 5 year old son. He has truly enjoyed listening to the sweet stories of friendship. While we have the books, I agree with the other reviewer, you really do not have to read along to be entertained. We put the tape in our son's player and he listens while drifting off to sleep. Unlike some children's books on tape, this is done so well - the timing, clarity and voices keep your interest. This is a winner!!

Life Is So Good: One Man's Extraordinary Journey through the 20th Century and How he Learned to Read at Age 98 Review

Life Is So Good: One Man's Extraordinary Journey through the 20th Century and How he Learned to Read at Age 98

I originally bought 2 copies and am now ordering 9 more copies. There is so much wisdom in this book. It is a primer on life. It goes beyond "Tuesdays with Morrie". George Dawson is so positive and upbeat. I agree with the previous reviewer that this should be mandatory reading in schools, but I would lower the grades to Junior High School and maybe even 5th and 6th graders. George gives us a black man's perspective of life in the South in the first half of the 1900's. He also gives us an excellent work ethic and model for living. White and black children alike would benefit from the historical perspective. We all can benefit from his little philosophical statements here and there. I had lots of smiles while reading this, plus many tears. I remember the South (I'm white) when bathrooms, drinking fountains and restaurants were segregated. I was a child from California, to whom this was foreign. George brings these memories back, but in a non-judgemental way. He experienced the introduction of cars and airplanes, as well as the tragedy at Columbine High School. Through out, he has respect for others and a tolerance for differing perspectives. Buy this book. Read it, and then pass it on. Share it with your children. Discuss the contents. George Dawson has truly given us all a remarkable gift.

Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants (Sisterhood of Traveling Pants, Book 1) Review

Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants (Sisterhood of Traveling Pants, Book 1)
Average Reviews:

With a new twist, this coming-of-age novel steals the genre for me. Ann Brashares takes us on a magical ride with the Traveling Pants and the best friends who comprise the sisterhood. Each girl experiences a different, new, aspect of life and their personality during their first summer apart in their lives. With each page, you will become closer to these girls, as they grow and begin to understand the world, and themselves.
The novel is brilliantly narrated, each girl developing a real human personality. These characters are not the 2-D characters often found in novels of this genre. Ann Brashares develops them so thoroughly, at least one of these girls rings incredibly true to my own adolescence.
Not only are they well-developed, and human, Brashares doesn't give them more wisdom than any other fifteen-year-olds would have. The characters un-annoyingly live their lives as real teenagers, and delve into human emotions that all women have experienced at some point.
If you are looking for a light read, with some underlying, and truly deeper characteristics, The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants is definitely one to invest in. Each girl will find her way into your heart, and possibly show you something you never knew was there.

The Three-Inch Golden Lotus: A Novel on Foot Binding (Fiction from Modern China) Review

The Three-Inch Golden Lotus: A Novel on Foot Binding (Fiction from Modern China)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Subtitled "a novel of foot binding", this book was first published in China in 1986 by the enormously popular Chinese writer, Feng Jicai and translated into English in 1994.
Told as a "once upon a time" story, the writer skillfully combines myth, reason and a compelling tale while bringing the reader into the world of the "three-inch golden lotus", the tiny bound feet of Chinese women.
Everything I have ever wondered about this fascinating custom is right here in this book. From the agonies inflicted upon young girls whose childhood includes broken bones and searing pain to the high esteem these tiny feet bring them as adults, it's all here, including the group of men who erotically adore them.
Set in the early part of the 20th century, Fragrant Lotus has her feet bound by her grandmother as an act of love and tradition. Later, her small feet catch the eyes of a wealthy man who makes her the bride of his oldest son. The women of the family all compete in family "foot contests" at which "lotus loving" friends of her father-in-law spend hours debating the fine points of the history of foot binding and its many nuances.
Through the years, Fragrant Lotus becomes the head of the family and comes face to face with the changing movement to outlaw foot binding.
At only 229 pages, this book is a great read on many levels. The writer really captures the world he has set out to describe, does a excellent job of characterization and keeps the tension high with his minute descriptions of the foot contests. He also has a way of making this all into a satirical tall tale as the concepts of truth and reality are constantly explored. Deceptively simple, this story has a far deeper meaning as a metaphor for the cultural revolution as standards of beauty change.
Highly recommended.

Lily's Crossing Review

Lily's Crossing
Average Reviews:

As thirteen year old seventh graders we really enjoyed reading this book for English class. Lily's Crossing was a book about friendship and both hard and happy times. Lily made a wonderful new friend, Albert, in Rockaway. This all happened during the summer of 1944, at the height of World War II. Everything occurred after Margaret, Lily's best friend, left Rockaway, Beach because her father was transferred to a new city were they manufactured bombers. Lily also had a difficult time dealing with her Poppy (father) leaving to help win the war. Read and discover the adventures and risks Lily and Albert experienced which built their friendship throughout the summer in Rockaway. Our feelings throughout this story were changing constantly. At different parts we both cried and shared happy and sad emotions with one another. Lily's Crossing is suspenseful, well written, and can be enjoyed by all ages.

Fall from Grace Review

Fall from Grace
Average Reviews:

Newspaper reporter Leo Desroches needs to feed his addiction. Estranged from his family, his coworkers, and life itself, Leo's impulses manifest themselves in startling ways as he delves into the murder of a Native woman found in a farmer's field outside Edmonton, Alberta. Leo's contradictions will have readers rooting for him even as they wince at the depths of his depravity.
Wayne Arthurson's début novel, Fall from Grace, tackles issues such as addiction and the plight of Natives in Canada, while delivering the grit of a thriller and the suspense of good mystery. The story twists from the opening sentence, "Do you want to see the body?" and continues to shock as Leo challenges local law enforcement on his way to a confrontation with a killer.
