The stories are poignant and funny and the life lessons should be taken to heart. They may not all apply right now, but I have a feeling that I will refer to them many times in the future. Especially telling are the times that Randall didn't go the next step or reach out to contact a person. There are always times when we want to take the easy way out, but I hope that his stories will keep me from that temptation. The book is easy to read. He comes across as a regular guy who just happens to run with some high powered people. His entrepreneurial lifestyle is an inspiration!

What Happy People Know: How the New Science of Happiness Can Change Your Life for the Better Review

What Happy People Know: How the New Science of Happiness Can Change Your Life for the Better
Average Reviews:

I've read so many self help books over the years, and I can't say any of them have been very helpful. Interesting, definitely - but nothing that got me closer to feeling the way I've dreamed about for so long: happy, confident, & relaxed. I've gotten so skeptical. Thank God there was still enough of a spark of desperate hope buried in me to get me to pick up this wonderful book.
A thousand "Thank You!"'s to Dan Baker who has shown me the light and allowed me to embark upon a whole new journey as I actually begin to enjoy my life and succeed at everything I try the way I never thought I could. Everything in this book now seems so obvious to me, now that I have worked many of Mr. Baker's brilliantly simple ideas into my thinking and my daily life and things are becoming 2nd nature. I wonder why so many of us drag ourselves through our miserable lives for so long, never coming to the conclusions represented in this book.
Some of the key ideas in this book include understanding the relationship between fear and appreciation, taking power over our emotions, finding good in everything, and seeing the pitfalls of money and possesions. The terrible VERB's (victimization, Entitlement, Rescue, and Blame). Dan Baker spits liquor in the face of traditional psychotherapy with all its failings. (Ever been to a shrink who said, "How does that make you feel?," "and how does that make you feel?," "and how does that make you feel?...." - all a bunch of crap, just as you probably suspected.
There's no way for me to explain the content of this book, and there's no need to. This book is an easy and enjoyable read. Get this book! I wish I had found it 20 years ago. I have wasted so much time and energy wandering through life miserable, exhausted, moody, anxious, fearful, angry, irritable, overwhelmed, and sometimes very depressed - with my eyes and my heart closed. When I think about this, for just a second I feel sadness and loss about all that wasted time, but I am so excited about the future that it doesn't even matter. The future is all that matters now. This book holds enormous implications for parents. Worried your kids are picking up your negativity, your worry, your moods - they are - do something about it - read this book.
Some quotes from Dan Baker:
"When you focus on problems...you become bogged down in you own negativity and fear. It's much smarter to focus on possibilities."
"Life hurts. If it doesn't hurt some of the time, it's not life. But you can't allow yourself to get wrapped up in this hurt, constantly reliving it, fearing the futre and grieving the past. That's victimization."
"I often see this [entitlement] happen to rich kids. They grow up in the condition that I call "enriched deprivation." They have so much that everything becomes meaningless. There's nothing left to yearn for, so they lose their power to grow and grasp. They feel entitled to luxury and come to expect it - but expectations, as you may recall, are one of the worst enemies of happiness. These kids become weak, jaded, and ungrateful... They not only lack of self esteem, they lack a sense of self."

Thanks: How the New Science of Gratitude Can Make You Happier Review

Thanks: How the New Science of Gratitude Can Make You Happier
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
It is hard to ignore the large number of books written over the past few years on the nature of happiness. In the past year, I had an opportunity to read over a dozen of these "positive psychology" books and glance through quite a few more. Most of them summarize the same set of research studies on what makes people happy, why it is difficult to attain and sustain happiness, who is most and least likely to find happiness, and how these positive experiences can be cultivated. This led me to read Robert Emmons' latest book with some degree of trepidation. I wondered if "Thanks!" would offer anything new to my growing fascination of these topics. Even though I already knew a great deal about Emmons' work and the study of gratitude, I found this book to be remarkably interesting and a reservoir of compelling insights and practical tips. Let me detail a few reasons why this book offers something new and why it belongs on people's bookshelves.
First, many "positive psychology" books are written by therapists, counselors, teachers, journalists, and other people who read and summarize the writings of scientists. Their books often lack the enthusiasm, creativity, and wisdom that can only be found by those devoting their lives to a topic. Robert Emmons is the world's leading authority on gratitude. His research is responsible for much of what we know about gratitude. It becomes readily apparent that Robert Emmons has spent years thinking about gratitude, studying gratitude, talking to people about gratitude, and trying to understand how gratitude fits into the "big picture" of achieving lasting happiness in a world fraught with moments of pain, stress, and adversity. His passion and wisdom are evident on nearly every page. I could not imagine reading a book on gratitude written by anyone else.
Second, the information in this book is backed by scientific research. This is not a book based on the musings of one person or a few people who believe that gratitude is a good thing. It is also not based on a few studies conducted by one researcher. The information in this book is based on a careful summary of research conducted on thousands of people by a number of different researchers around the world. Taken together, these studies show that gratitude is one of the strongest contributors to happiness and meaning in life. But more than that, gratitude has been shown to strengthen people's social relationships, improve people's physical health, and motivate people to act in ways that enhances the quality of their moments, days, and lives. In addition to discussing his own research, Robert Emmons reviews and integrates the work of other researchers, philosophers, and literary minds. In a little more than 200 pages, "Thanks!" has quickly become the essential source of everything there is to know about gratitude (so far).
Third, it is spiritually uplifting. Emmons weaves in stories of real people sharing how gratitude played (or failed to play) a role in their lives. These stories add flesh, blood, and feeling to the wealth of science and wisdom in each chapter; they capture the true value of gratitude and the beauty of humanity. With these narratives and the easygoing writing style, it is easy to enjoy reading this book while outside in the grass on a lazy summer afternoon.
Whether your goal is intellectual stimulation, self-enhancement, or something in between, this book will make an immediate positive impact on your life.

"Although the book is geared toward morning meditations, you can benefit from it anytime, day or night. I suggest keeping it on your bedside table or desk so that you can refer to it whenever you need a comforting boost from above." - From the book
Spiritual psychologist Doreen Virtue encourages readers to devote a portion of each day to connecting with the angels in the book Daily Guidance from Your Angels: 365 Angelic Messages to Soothe, Heal, and Open Your Heart. Drawing from years of experience as an angel therapist and clairvoyant, she provides 365 specific messages from the angelic realm designed to uplift, inform and inspire.
In her own spiritual practice, Virtue notes that when she has allowed herself to skip an occasional morning of reflection, her day wasn't as fun or satisfying. Desiring to facilitate daily devotions for readers to ensure a magical, fulfilling day, the author provides reflections ranging from profound teachings to beneficial ways to approach the day. These daily meditations aren't dated, so you can begin anywhere, anytime--either reading consecutive meditations or choosing one at random.
Some of the themes in Daily Guidance from Your Angels include:
*Be Gentle With Yourself
*Say Goodbye to Guilt
*Honor Your Agreements
*Bless Your Meals
*Complete Projects
*Turn Around Nervousness
*Know That You're Perfectly Understood By Us
*Detach From Drama
*Connect With the Spirit of Nature
*Enjoy a Sense of Belonging
*Know That You Can Never Ask for Too Much
*Honor Your Sensitivity
*Listen to Your Inner Child
*Expect Everything to Go Well
I've consulted this book at random several times, and I've found each insight rich with liberating, practical wisdom. As one who is often hard on herself, I am especially encouraged by messages dealing with lightening up, the perfection of all, and treating oneself with kindness.
If you're looking for a book offering spiritual nourishment and angelic awareness, Daily Guidance from Your Angels will help you connect with our unseen helpers and bask in their love and support.

The Importance Of Living Review

The Importance Of Living
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Lin Yutang is endlessly fascinating, and his book of personal philosophy, "The Importance of Living," is a classic, especially his listing of the three American vices (gee, I thought they were virtues!), his unique perspective on loafing, smoking, vacationing, and women in conversation. I've read it several times and have spoken on Lin, and have even appeared as Lin Yutang one time.
But the Little, Brown "reprint" edition is a travesty of cheapness....a white cover and no running heads. Why do American publishers cut corners? It's an insult to the author and the reader. I recommend you avoid the Little Brown edition and buy the original 1937 edition, published by John Day Co., or if you want a new alternative edition in quality paperback, buy the recently published edition in Singapore by Cultured Lotus, available from http://www.selectbooks.com.sg. The original and the Singapore copies have beautiful Chinese paintings on the cover and delightful running heads.
Remember, "The busy man is never wise, and the wise man is never busy." -- Lin Yutang

This 33 page book encapsulates a lifetime of observation, trial and error learning, and hard-won wisdom of its author, Bob Weinstein. It addresses several aspects of living - health, finances, relationships, and work. This faith-influenced book resonated with me on several quotes and I knew instantly where I needed to work on my life (you know, that little cringe in your gut when you KNOW it's talking about you?). It can be a dynamic tool to get you motivated and doing something to better your circumstances.
I was given this book to review and would recommend it for any person of any age in any circumstance.

I found this book by chance searching for books on DBT. Part of DBT is mindfullness-being in the moment. This book is perfect. I bookmarked on my new Kindle about 20 that are relevant for me on a regular basis. I love that they are short (1 Page) excerpts from her other books that can be read in a short period of time, hence almost used as a daily guide. Plan to look into her other books. If you want to quiet the brain and it's negative chatter- then this book is a good place to start.

Choosing Happiness: Life and Soul Essentials Review

Choosing Happiness: Life and Soul Essentials
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Happiness is a by-product of how thoughtful and generous your own choices are! Current research has proven that the happiest people in all societies including this one are the people who have relative peace of mind and are above all generous and good-humored. This book lives up to its claim that making relatively simple changes in the way you look at your own choices and then actually behave will make an immediate and significant difference. This is a book for people who want to take charge of the way they are living. In a very crowded marketplace it is surprisingly difficult to find books that are both intelligent and uncluttered. This one is certainly about happiness but it gets straight to the point that it is not other people or more "things" or more money that will make a lasting difference, but rather a willingness to see what works and what doesn't. Do more of what is going well; do less of what's making you or someone else unhappy. Sounds as though we should all know that, yet over and over again we do the same things that have already caused us problems. I am a practicing therapist and know that it is not education or high intelligence that makes the difference - it is a willingness to learn from experience and to value what you can do and give. There are lots of great "experience" stories here to help make the insights come to life. This book is beautifully set out and could be read by first-timers to this kind of writing as well as much more sophisticated readers. The author has a spiritual outlook that reflects the Dalai Lama's ("My religion is kindness"). A kinder life is a happier one. She leaves us in no doubt that this is possible and achievable.

The 9-to-5 Cure: Work on Your Own Terms and Reinvent Your Life Review

The 9-to-5 Cure: Work on Your Own Terms and Reinvent Your Life
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is my first book review on Amazon and I decided it was worth leaving my two cents. Once I started reading this book, I couldn't put it down. The author outlines how working on your own terms is possible. She practices what she preaches and provides numberous stories and examples to prove it. The biggest thing I've struggled with in my traditional 9-to-5 job is not having time to pursue things I want to do. I can only afford to take off TWO days for my brother's wedding in Ohio. Maybe I'll fly to Florida NEXT year to visit friends when my vacation time renews. My husband and I own a motorcycle and trying to save enough vacation days to travel for any length of time during the summer months always leaves me wanting. Rationing my two weeks vacation a year is always depressing. The author acknowledges this common frusteration and poses a solution. She's living the solution herself (wait till you read about her 18 weeks vacation a year!) The author walks you through brainstorming activities to help you get out of the 9-to-5 rut and there are sections outlining pitfalls to avoid. For me, this book was a push to really examine talents and experiences I can use to redefine my career and lifestyle. My career path has changed course as I've already started pursuing potential leads...hopefully it does the same for you.

Don't Sweat the Small Stuff--and it's all small stuff (Don't Sweat the Small Stuff Series) Review

Don't Sweat the Small Stuff--and it's all small stuff (Don't Sweat the Small Stuff Series)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The cover of this book says it was a bestselling book of the year at one time. After opening it up and glancing through it, it't not hard to see why.
The pupose of the book is to get you to look at things, common situations we all come across everyday, like being criticized or being given more work than you can possibly finish, and see them a little differently. Believe it or not, it delivers- and in just a page or two at a time if you can believe that!
That's because the wisdom is definitely there, on every page, and it just plain makes sense. Many times I've read a chapter or two and thought, "Why didn't I think of that before?".
The other good thing about this tiny book is that you could either sit down and read it cover-to-cover, or just pick it up once in awhile and pick a random chapter to read. Either way, the mini-chapters are sure to quickly leave most readers wondering why they make such a big deal out of the things they do. Other short self-help books I like include "Finding Happiness in a Frustrating World".

My Grandfather's Blessings: Stories of Strength, Refuge, and Belonging Review

My Grandfather's Blessings: Stories of Strength, Refuge, and Belonging
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Change of life does not always mean hormonal changes. After life threatening illnesses which are now considered chronic, I broused Amazon and have purchased many books which spoke of the nature of illness and the changes which occur during their life in your body. The books spoke little of the soul. They spoke little of being dependent on others, feeling awful most of the time, asking questions of the gods which went unanswered and so on and so on. Very boring stuff. Then this book. Rachel Naomi Remen: you have answered my questions. You have polished my soul. You have taught me the lessons which meditation could not, soothed me when food could not, enlivened me when wine could not. Sitting in my doctor's waiting room, crying just reading your introduction to your Grandfather, I was called into the examining room and while having a PAP smear, read a portion of your book to my internist. I am blessed with a doctor who not only is a fine diagnostician, but a man of great humor. He said this was a first for him. Me, too. There is no time in life when reading a chapter of that book is not in perfect accordance with the rules of medicine, both physical and emotional. Thank you does not say it. I thought I was beyond words. Obviously, not. I recommend this book to everyone, sick or well....but especially to those for whom illness is a constant companion. There are many road to healing. I read somewhere: "My illness is a friend who brings me great truths." It brought me your book as well. I bless you.

Question Your Thinking, Change The World: Quotations from Byron Katie Review

Question Your Thinking, Change The World: Quotations from Byron Katie
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This may be one of the most profound books I've read. If Katie's approach to life resonates with you ("The Work"), this book will have a special place on your bookshelf.
This book isn't about "information". If you need "information", look elsewhere. This isn't snackfood. It's not about a quick-fix to problems in your life. (Go see your psychologist.) It's about seeing life in a whole new life-altering perspective.
The book takes you through Katie's laser-focused process of systematically destroying everything you thought you knew about life and simplifying it down to it's beautiful core. The book works its way around a number of topics, but the theme always comes back to "The Work", a simple set of questions that allows you to really see what is going on around you.
It's about how to wade through life without the weight that is currently on your shoulders. She takes you through an amazing journey that will show you that even in the worst of circumstances that the only villain is your own thoughts.
I've read all of Katie's work. I've met Katie in person. I love that this stuff isn't "pie-in-the-sky" pink-crystals-and-new-age-music stuff. It's real. It's very specific. It has changed real people's lives. And if you let it flood your mind, it will change you forever in a positive way.
To be specific, this guide is a compilation of many bits from her other books. However, because they are in small bites, they really strike you deep in your heart. I absolutely loved this book and plan to re-read it regularly.

In this powerful book of quotations, Byron Katie talks about the most essential issues that face us all—love, sex, and relationships; health, sickness, and death; parents and children; work and money; and self-realization. The profound, lighthearted wisdom embodied within is not theoretical; it is absolutely authentic.
Not only will this book help you on many specific issues, but it will point you toward your own wisdom and will encourage you to question your own mind, using the four simple yet incredibly powerful questions of Katie's process of self-inquiry, called The Work. Katie is a living example of the clear, all-embracing love that is our true identity. Because she has thoroughly questioned her own mind, her words shine with the joy of understanding.
"People used to ask me if I was enlightened," she says, "and I would say, 'I don't know anything about that. I'm just someone who knows the difference between what hurts and what doesn't.' I'm someone who wants only what is. To meet as a friend each concept that arose turned out to be my freedom."

No Impact Man
By Colin Beavan
Farrar, Straus and Giroux, Publishers
ISBN: 978-0-374-22288-8
I love to read environmental writing. There are so many good books available right now on the subject of the environment and global warming that a person can become overwhelmed. I believe this book is a must if you have to limit what you read in this category. (But please don't limit yourself!)
There are so many things to like about this book that I will try to do it justice in this review.
First of all I like the subject. I think that this timely subject must be written about if there is any possibility for changing the status quo. Mr. Beavan takes on the subject from an if not me then who perspective that shows his willingness to step outside of his safety zone and do his part to find some answers.
Secondly I like the fact that one of the main focuses of this book is how changing our way of life to one that does not impact the earth also has an equally positive impact on our personal relationships. I think that it is important that people start to realize the benefits that we all receive when our lifestyles are no longer focused on the act of consumption.
Third, I like his commitment throughout the whole project to do the best he could. Sometimes we are not perfect (thank heavens) but the act of trying is what makes the biggest impact. This commitment carried over to the production of the book itself. It was produced as low impact as possible and shows what can be done if the desire is there.
From a writing standpoint I feel that Mr. Beavan did a wonderful job of making the transitions from information that he has researched, His own personal feelings, and anecdotes on the affect this project had on his family. My interest was always kept happily looking forward to reading just a little more and for the most part I found the flow of the book to move well. Occasionally, I did find some sentences that I had to go over a time or two to make sure that my comprehension was correct. In general it was a very relaxing read. I also appreciate the fact that he included in the back of the book additional places to find information.
What this book does not have a great deal of is detailed information on how they accomplished going off of the grid. Mind you there was a lot of discussion of mason jars and bicycles and a specific change that had to find a solution in each chapter, but not very many more details on how to go off the grid. Near the end of the book, however, you will find a brief outline of a typical day in their household. For the most part the book seemed to be about how they went about researching the information that they needed to accomplish their goals given their specific situation. I think that if this idea is to work for us we all need to do a bit of our own research. I live in Los Angeles. What I have to do to have no impact, especially in the area of transportation is much different than it is in New York. So instead of being told exactly what to do, I found myself being inspired to find the way that works best for my family and my self.
"Tis a gift to be simple, tis a gift to be free"
Thank you for such an inspiring work.

The Shift: Taking Your Life from Ambition to Meaning Review

The Shift: Taking Your Life from Ambition to Meaning
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The Shift is a companion book for the movie with the same title, both of which are self-sufficient. Nonetheless, I recommend reading the book before seeing the movie, as it will help you grasp much of the significance. The book doesn't give away the plot of the movie, though it refers to it once in awhile.
Like the other 30-some books by Wayne Dyer, this one is filled with inspirational quotes from famous spiritual teachers and classical holy texts, personal stories, and parables. This one, however, is only 112 pages and can be read easily in a day or two. It can be read several times and you will still get something out of it.
The original title of the book and movie was "From Ambition to Meaning," and interestingly, there are only four chapters, each with one of these words. The first chapter, "From," discusses the void where we came from and how in the womb, we are doing nothing but being lived by "all creating energy that seems to do nothing, and at the same time leaves nothing undone." Wayne cites quantum physics to validate the nothingness from whence we came. We are reminded that everything in the material world is truly like what it came from. Ergo, we are truly spiritual beings having a temporary human experience. And "our real self is the loving observer of our sensory experiences." He leads us to the conclusion that "nonbeing and love are synonymous." We are given tools on how to get back to the Nothingness, such as meditation, feeling the oneness, and surrender. We are even challenged to give away one item a day, anything we do not use on a daily basis!
Before we realize that, however, nearly all of us get sucked into "Ambition," which is the title of chapter 2. Here we learn how our false self develops as we identify with the ego. This entails beliefs such as "Who I am is what I have, what I do, and what others think of me." This "somebody training" involves learning more lies such as "I am separate from everyone else, from what's missing in my life, and from God."
In chapter 3 ("To") we make the U-turn back to our "fromness." There comes a time in everyone's life when they see that the inauthentic self is a lie. This doesn't mean the loss of ambition, but rather that our drive is now directed toward a life based on meaning and purpose. Some signs that we may be ready include: the ego's "mantra of more" becomes less attractive; we find ourselves doing less; we shun the spotlight to work in the shadows; we believe in unity more than separateness; we begin to realize we're connected to Spirit; we begin to trust the wisdom that created us. Next, Wayne tells us what to expect and gives a 7-point summary of our U-turn. He describes four qualities of the shift from ambition to meaning: surprising, vivid, benevolent and enduring.
In the final chapter, "Meaning," Wayne tell us how he told his buddy Ram Dass many years ago, "All of my life I wanted to be somebody. Now I finally am somebody--but it isn't me." All the fame and wealth did not satisfy him and he didn't feel fulfilled till making the shift back to his authentic self. Wayne describes the four virtues that constitute our original nature: reverence for all life, natural sincerity, gentleness and supportiveness. "Today," Wayne declares, "my life is almost 100 percent devoted to service in one way or another. Each day begins with a prayer of `Thank you.'" He describes the three most important things to watch for during the shift: the shift from entitlement to humility; the shift from control to trust (in yourself, others and God); and the shift from attachment to letting go.
Great little book packed with inspiration and encouragement! With the tendency we are heading in for shorter books at smaller prices, this makes a really great gift to yourself or to someone who is over 30 and perhaps beginning to question life's meaning and his/her purpose.

The History of Jazz Review

The History of Jazz
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Anyone purportedly writing a "History of Jazz" faces a daunting task: A complex history of interwoven musical strands, the linkages and evolutions (sometimes skipping a generation), the geographic spread to Europe and elsewhere, the eventual fragmentation of jazz into diverse sounds and approaches, and the opinions of knowledgeable, rabid fans.
Ted Giola succeeds magnificently: This is the best single-volume history of jazz I've seen. While not without some minor flaws (see below), this is a comprehensive, generally very well written, and intriguing story of the genesis and development of jazz. It is a compelling story, and Giola writes without mythologizing jazz, or constantly needing to remind us that this is, indeed, art. The giants of jazz-- Armstrong, Ellington, Parker, Holiday, etc. are critiqued rather than lionized.
Giola proceeds through the now familiar African, American, African-American, and European roots of jazz that emanated first from New Orleans. He traces its developmental routes through Chicago and New York, the Armstrong solo evolution, and the diverse "territory bands" such as those of Bennie Moten and Count Basie.
Fortunately, Giola does not limit himself to a strictly chronological narrative. He interrupts the timeline with revealing excursions into topics such as the development of instrumental styles (e.g., piano, trumpet), and jumps ahead to show the impact of early influences on later styles (e.g., Lester Young and bebop). He also pays attention to cultural, technological, and economic context, without letting these subtexts blare over the music. Giola knows music from the "inside" as well as the outside, and his discussions of jazz technique and harmonic and rhythmic innovations are detailed and precise. His deconstruction of various solos and styles is illuminating: Charlie Parker's "Indiana" is a version "where almost every bar features one or more altered tones-an augmented fifth, a major seventh played against a minor chord, a flatted ninth leading to a sharpened ninth...a textbook example of how bop harmonic thinking revolutionized the flow of the melodic line in jazz." Yet Giola is also astute in directing our attention to the "core of simplicity" ...the "monophonic melody statements" in bop.
Giola's critiques of various musicians are generally fair and accurate, and he discusses the famous as well as the overlooked. Every jazz fan, however, will probably find some favorite musician given insufficient coverage, or will disagree with a Giola critique. There's no mention of Carmen McCrae, about half a page on Sarah Vaughan, very little mention of European jazz, not much discussion of Miles Davis' or Basie's later work ("The Atomic Mr. Basie," for example). For my tastes, there is not enough on Mingus' sidemen (other than Eric Dolphy and Rahsaan Roland Kirk) and he describes the Mingus Town Hall Concert as a fiasco. (Organizationally it was a disaster, but musically it succeeded.) Giola's statement that "Mingus was the closest jazz has come to having its own Ezra Pound," is baffling. To a large degree, however, these are editorial (the book is only 395 pages long), as well as critical decisions. Not everyone would agree, as I do, with Giola's dismissive statement that Kenny G. "sold over $20 million of emaciated pseudo-jazz to a devoted audience. A critic cannot and should not please everyone.
Giola commands our respect because of his thorough knowledge of jazz and its web-like variations and influences. He knows his material well, whether it's the origins of jazz or the "Third Stream" and "Free Jazz" movements of relatively recent years. I recommend this book very highly to both musician and non-musician alike, jazz aficionado and novice. You may read the book as an introduction to jazz, or to achieve a greater synthesis of what you already know. It may also serve as a springboard to more narrowly focused jazz writing, such as Rosenthal's "Hard Bop" or Lees' "Meet Me at Jim and Andy's." There is a general index, an index of songs and albums, 15 pages on recommended listening, eight black and white photos, some notes on sources, as well as suggestions for further reading. This book, and perhaps a copy of the "Penguin Guide to Jazz," could easily serve as the core of a jazz lover's bookshelf.

I'm giving this book to 10 middle managers - while initially they'll probably think it's childish, once they read it they will understand why they received it. Seuss gives us all a simplified view of life and applying the basics to home and work. I also highly recommend everyone read "Open Your Mind, Open Your Life: A Little Book of Wisdom" by Taro Gold.
