The stories are poignant and funny and the life lessons should be taken to heart. They may not all apply right now, but I have a feeling that I will refer to them many times in the future. Especially telling are the times that Randall didn't go the next step or reach out to contact a person. There are always times when we want to take the easy way out, but I hope that his stories will keep me from that temptation. The book is easy to read. He comes across as a regular guy who just happens to run with some high powered people. His entrepreneurial lifestyle is an inspiration!

The Affluent Entrepeneur was a pleasant surprise. I normally don't enjoy non-fiction books because they don't hold my interest, either through poor writing, or poor subject matter. The Affluent Entrepeneur was well-written and interesting. Giving concrete, real-world examples of each principle and how to put those princilple into affect in your own life. Patrick Snow has written an easy to follow road map for all who wish to become more affluent, not just monetarily, but in all aspects of their life. Great job.

Start-Up: What We May Still Learn From Silicon Valley Review

Start-Up: What We May Still Learn From Silicon Valley
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is NOT a book about why Silicon Valley is better than everyone else, and how to recreate it in Europe.
This is an in-depth analysis of Silicon Valley's success from historic, cultural, and financial viewpoints that until now has not been clearly and succinctly articulated.
Dr. Lebret is not a high-nosed scholar writing about innovation from a comfy desk in academia. He is in the trenches with the entrepreneurs, helping them get their business ideas clear, helping them get funding, and, most importantly, he supports students and scientists with seed funding to put them on the entrepreneurial path. The knowledge and understanding of the issues that face young entrepreneurs is clearly, and sympathetically, expressed in his writing.
This book is required reading for would-be entrepreneurs, people leading innovation, and policy makers. It is meant for Europeans, Americans, and those in emerging counties too. It will change the way you see entrepreneurs and the ecosystem around them.

Although start-ups represent a major phenomenon in the USA, they also create skepticism and even suspicion, perhaps because of the excesses of the Internet bubble. Apple, Microsoft, Intel, Cisco, Yahoo and Google were all start-ups and these success stories show that the phenomenon is not mere speculation. The goal of this book is to show start-ups from a different angle. Start-ups are created by individuals who are passionate and who have dreams. Therefore this work should not only be read by specialists of innovation or by high tech entrepreneurs, but also by anyone interested in the history and economics of start-ups. The book is presented in two parts: it begins with a presentation of Silicon Valley start-ups, which ends with a description of the ecosystem of this region. The second part is dedicated to Europe, where the start-up phenomenon has failed in comparison. The main message is that it is absolutely necessary to take more inspiration from Silicon Valley.

Lawn Boy Review

Lawn Boy
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
LAWN BOY provides some quick entertainment. It's a very manageable read at less than 90 pages. Readers are treated to quite a few laughs and a little business education.
The main character is a 12-year-old boy. His grandmother gives him a riding lawn mower for his birthday. She says it was his late grandfather's mower. Miracle of all miracles, the thing actually works, and he sets about mowing their pitiful excuse for a yard.
When he finishes the yard, a neighbor wonders if he can get his own lawn mowed. Soon he's mowing for the whole neighborhood. In a few short days, he has over three hundred dollars stuffed in his pockets.
Arnold, a stay-at-home stockbroker, would like his lawn mowed; but he admits to being short on cash. He offers a deal -- mow his lawn and he'll invest the cost of the mowing in the stock market and hopefully increase the investment. Boy, does he!
Before he knows it, he has a growing business and more money than he can even imagine. He has a stock portfolio that would be the envy of any businessperson. And just think, his only dream at the start of the summer was to have enough to afford a new inner tube for his bike tire.
The problem now is how do you break it to your parents that in five short weeks you have tons of money? Will they believe you?
Gary Paulsen has done it yet again. His die-hard fans will like the story, and reluctant readers will find it a quick and satisfying read. It's also a terrific read-aloud that will have them laughing and teach them a little about capitalism in the bargain.

Launch: How to Quickly Propel Your Business Beyond the Competition Review

Launch: How to Quickly Propel Your Business Beyond the Competition
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Michael Stelzner's new book Launch: How to Quickly Propel Your Business Beyond the Competition has fired me up and helped me launch a couple of my own new ventures.
How? Because Mike's been there, done that.
Mike's Got Street Cred
I always like to know who's doing the work. If I'm building a new house, who's my contractor? As a baseball fan, I love to check out the players' stats. And I never miss a new U2 or Newsboys CD because I know they always do good work.
In the case of a book, I like to know something about the author.
Mainly, is he an authority in his field?
In 2007, Mike authored a white paper entitled Writing White Papers that landed him universal acclaim and assignments writing white papers and consulting for over 100 corporations. His work launched his career into the stratosphere.
Not one to rest on his laurels, in 2009 Mike launched Social Media Examiner, which in less than 5 months was declared the #1 small business blog in the world by Technorati.
I read SME faithfully because its articles and resources are always a big help to me and my businesses.
So Mike writing a book about launching is like Ted Williams writing about hitting, F.L. Wright writing about architecture, or Picasso about painting. Mike knows launching. A Book of Principles
The principles in Launch will give you and your ventures more
*clarity and direction (what to do);
*efficiency (how to do it better);
*synergy (how the steps and ingredients can complement one another); and
*joy (how putting other people's needs before your own ends up making everyone happier--both others and you yourself).
How can this claim be true and why is it essential to your success? Simple, really.
Being principled works--both in your business life and your personal life. Good, honest, generous, selfless principles make people successful and happy.
What a concept, right?
The Elevation Principle
Mike's main marketing principle is counter-intuitive: don't market and don't sell. Instead, meet "the core desires of prospects and customers by helping them solve their basic problems at no cost."
Talk about a principle.
His EP formula is Einsteinian elegant: GC + OP - MM = G. That is, great content + other people - marketing messages = growth. Makes such beautiful sense.
*Write great stuff that people can use. Inform and teach them. Show them you know what you're talking about. And give it to them for free.
*Get other people involved. Welcome them into your world, your sphere of knowledge. Help them. "If you lift people up, they'll lift you up."
*Don't sell! Don't be pushy! Shift your emphasis from "What can we sell you?" to "How can we help you?"
*That formula will result in growth. Not just for your business, but for you too--growth as a person of principles.
Consider Others Before Yourself
Mike never preaches in this book. Never stands on a soap box. That's not his style, thankfully.
But the subtext, the really beautiful, inspiring, implied message is this: life's really all about living for other people.
When you get yourself out of the center of the universe and realize that your main purpose--and most enriching and rewarding strategy-- in life is to live for other people, those people benefit and so will you.
Because people usually reciprocate. Especially when they sense genuine good will coming from you.
Igniting the Elevation Principle
So how can this principle be activated and used to launch you and your business? Back to the EP:
*Help people solve their problems. Write how-to guides. Show them what you know. Show them you're there for them.
*Don't push, manipulate, or pressure people into buying what you're selling.
*Give gifts--freely and without any expectation of getting one back. What gift can you give? Your knowledge. Your time. Your friendship and good counsel.
What's the payoff for paying it forward? Business, likely. Possibly lots of business. Because people like to do business with people who are low key, caring, giving, and knowledgeable.
Your bottom line--and your life--will benefit from following this principle of putting others first.
Not many people are like that. So you'll be different--as a business and a human being.
"Helping people ensures your business will stand out from the competition."Sound Business Sense
Mike's wisdom about putting people first would be enough reason to read Launch. But there's plenty more great advice about many subjects.
Such as these practical, action steps to take to launch your business and yourself:
*Crafting and measuring "SMART" goals
*Implementing specific social media marketing strategies
*Inspiring yourself by "looking outward"
*Finding role models
*Working with experts
*Attracting and engaging "firestarters"--people who can help launch you
The Primary & Nuclear Fuel: Great Content
The first part of the EP equation is GC (good content). Why does Mike place such great emphasis upon GC?
Because great content sells. Its persuasive. It explains what you know and shows what you can do. All at once.
And, as the great French poet Jean de La Fontaine said, "By the work one knows the workman."
As a teacher of writing and literature for 38 years, I've read a lot of books, poems, articles, essays, dissertations--you name it. Mike's work contains all the elements of good writing.
For just one example, his metaphoric motif (getting literary now!) of the launch and the rocket, its fuel and trajectory, are all poetically persuasive. Poetry persuades. Its rhyme, rhythm, figurative language, and compression unconsciously convince us. Mike's a poet and he may not even know it!
Launch is a living demonstration of good content: it's clear, crisp, fun and easy to read, and packed with rocket fuel to propel you.
All you have to do is ignite its principles and watch them rocket you up, up and away!We Have Lift Off: Read Launch!
Once in a while the planets align perfectly: things are happening in your life that link up magically and wonderfully with outside forces or events.
That just happened for me. Launch just launched at the same time I'm launching a novel and a new startup business.
Could the timing have been any better for me? Nope.
And the timing is right for you, too. Because there's no time like the present.
Launch is a winner: its solid gold principles and inspirational mission plan couldn't make more sense or work any better.
So, Launch yourself now! Get on board and take your dreams for a ride straight to the stars!

Hardcore Inventing: Invent, Protect, Promote, and Profit From Your Inventions Review

Hardcore Inventing: Invent, Protect, Promote, and Profit From Your Inventions
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)

When I cruise through B&N and spot a book that might be helpful to my SCORE-dot-org clients I usually take the necessary steps to write a book review for it. These days I am being a little more particular as to what I will review since I am tiring of the activity. But I could not let this book slide by. In my humbe opinion it is a great companion book to Invent Yourself Rich: 16 Secrets for Creating Million-Dollar Inventions which I read and wrote a review for a few years back.
The instant book has five parts broken into twenty chapters and three appendices as follows:
I. Invent (1-8)
II. Protect (9-11)
III. Promote (12-14)
IV. Profit (15-20)
V. Appendices (A-C)
0. Introduction
1. Success story - The Rescue Streamer Technology
2. Identifying & solving the problem
3. How nature inspired my inventions
4. Scour your brain
5. Making your idea a reality: Inventor's logs, prototypes, & marketing evaluations
6. Build a show prototype
7. Name your invention
8. Checklist - Is your idea feasible, marketable & financially viable?
9. Safeguard your intellectual property - Paranoia can be good
10. Step-by-step guide from disclosure to patent - Etch it in stone
11. Alernatives to utility patents
12. Get your invention out there
13. Find investors: Targeted strikes & mobilizing the troops
14. Protect yourself from fraudulent promotion companies
15. Licening
16. Manufacturing
17. Marketing
18. The home entrepreneur - Bottom-feeding
19. Venture Capitalists & angel investors
20. Critical crossroads
A. Useful Web sites
B. Suggested reading
C. Sample agreements & letters
The book is not written by an attorney nor a business consultant. It's written by an inventor who wants to share his experiences in getting his invention (Rescue Streamer Technology) patented and profitable. He's also probably written it as a marketing tool for his invention. If I had not read the book, then I would never have heard of his invention.
This book is probably more detailed and a little bit more informative than the book I read a few years back. It gives another perspective - so I highly recommend anyone interested in the subject get both books and become very informed on the topic. 5 stars!

The Savvy Musician: Building a Career, Earning a Living and Making a Difference
Average Reviews:

As a music professor, this book has become required reading for all of my students. In fact, I recommend this book to everyone- professionals, amateurs, and students alike. The vignettes are fantastic, the writing style is enjoyable, and the content is superb. This book created a starting point for our department's recent creation of a music business emphasis.
As a clinician on the topic of entrepreneurship for college students, this book is a primary resource and top suggestion for each and every workshop I present. The outstanding material in this book hits home.
Since my sophomore year of college in 1994, I've never held a job that wasn't teaching or performing music. I take great pride in this fact, and encourage others to do so as well. Thinking creatively, never making excuses, and reminding one's self on a daily basis just how lucky we are to be musicians has made this possible. This book provides all of the inspiration and substance to guide others to a successful career in music.

How to Make Millions with Your Ideas: An Entrepreneur's Guide Review

How to Make Millions with Your Ideas: An Entrepreneur's Guide
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Dan Kennedy wrote this book to be helpful and is genuinly insightful for the reader. "How to Make Millions with Your Ideas" is dated material, but helpful and inspiring. Dan is candid and has a ton of practical knowledge to offer in this book. I can recommend this book because it delivers what is says it will; 8 different approaches to making your ideas work and make money. More recently his books are the longest sales letters ever written, all designed to get you to buy more of the same material from him.
However, be warned he hates the internet and would like to ignore it. He wrote this in 1996 and the web was really forcing these old school guys to deal with it. So if you were looking for help with anything "e" related, like I was, this is not the book for you.
Ironically, the two companies I found relevant to my marketing have been indited or convicted and are now out of business. I thought I would learn more about these companies after reading about them in this book. So I Googled them and found court cases and a bunch of nastiness. Interesting! Again, the book was written in 1996 and I read it in Mid-September 2007, anything can happen. Right?
If you are looking for a book that is truly helpful with "e" marketing or is at least current STAY AWAY from "The Official Get Rich Guide to Information Marketing" I finished it a few days ago and was very disappointed; it kept referencing me to their website for the information I really bought the book for. If you really want to learn how to be a Junk-Mail Jockey or a Spammer skip buying that book and go directly to the Kennedy-Glazer web site and be prepared to spend BIG BUCKS for the real information.

Making a Living Without a Job, revised edition: Winning Ways for Creating Work That You Love Review

Making a Living Without a Job, revised edition: Winning Ways for Creating Work That You Love
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is a remarkably interesting book about how to approach self-employment. It is not a cookbook or listing of readymade businesses, but rather a guidebook about the entire process of moving into self-employment.
Published in 1993, some of the information is a bit dated, but since the primary thrust of the book is not to provide the reader with specific current opportunities, the book holds up very well over time.
There are many examples of people building different types of businesses, and advice from some well-known success stories. The book is broken into five parts, each with two or three chapters. Each chapter starts with a relevant quote, and treats a specific area of focus, such as; Doing First Things First, Uncovering Your Assets, Creating Multiple Profit Centers, Marketing On A Shoestring, etc.
While there is plenty of advice on creating and starting a business (or multiple businesses), the thing that I think is most important in this book is how the author deals with the psychological issues. Most books on starting your own business will mention the emotional and mental obstacles involved, but seldom give the reader much in the way of concrete methods for dealing with them. This book gives you the tools for dealing with the most difficult part of running your own business - your own habits and attitudes. Winter spends a great deal of time covering the psychological groundwork necessary to succeed at being your own boss. She does this in a clear manner, with examples from the real world. There is also a booklist in the back with resources for different areas, such as Personal Growth, Marketing, Entrepeneurial Inspiration, and so on.
I found this book one of the most useful in working on my attitude about being self-employed. It is a positive, uplifting read without being unrealistic and full of fluff. This may well be one of the best books around for preparing a person to start their own business. While there is not a laundry list of business ideas nor a lot of technical detail like legal issues and such, I think that creating the kind of mindset that allows one to succeed is the first and most important step in reaching that success, regardless of the venture. This book will be a very great help in establishing the kind of mindset that will allow one to succeed. I think the author's approach will also allow this book to be of use for decades to come, regardless of how technologies and markets change. This information is basic to all business ventures.

The 9-to-5 Cure: Work on Your Own Terms and Reinvent Your Life
Average Reviews:

This is my first book review on Amazon and I decided it was worth leaving my two cents. Once I started reading this book, I couldn't put it down. The author outlines how working on your own terms is possible. She practices what she preaches and provides numberous stories and examples to prove it. The biggest thing I've struggled with in my traditional 9-to-5 job is not having time to pursue things I want to do. I can only afford to take off TWO days for my brother's wedding in Ohio. Maybe I'll fly to Florida NEXT year to visit friends when my vacation time renews. My husband and I own a motorcycle and trying to save enough vacation days to travel for any length of time during the summer months always leaves me wanting. Rationing my two weeks vacation a year is always depressing. The author acknowledges this common frusteration and poses a solution. She's living the solution herself (wait till you read about her 18 weeks vacation a year!) The author walks you through brainstorming activities to help you get out of the 9-to-5 rut and there are sections outlining pitfalls to avoid. For me, this book was a push to really examine talents and experiences I can use to redefine my career and lifestyle. My career path has changed course as I've already started pursuing potential leads...hopefully it does the same for you.

Are you interested in learning about how to monetize an iPhone app? Then this is your book. Unless you're a C++ "Cocoa-touch" programmer, then you won't be designing or creating applications. If you're like me, you know enough to know that you need to hire and manage someone to do the programming. This book covers project mangement, and everything else you should think about when designing your iPhone application.
In particular, this book covers the marketplace, business offering, terminology, success rules, and Apple protocols for both the design and submission process. In addition, if you're new to the business world, this book covers many of the basics of establishing the enterprise.
I currently own a magazine, and am building an iPhone application. This guide was helpful and I would strongly consider reading any other guides written by Aaron Nicholson, Joel Elad, & Damien Stolarz.

Little Red Book of Selling: 12.5 Principles of Sales Greatness Review

Little Red Book of Selling: 12.5 Principles of Sales Greatness

This book is one of dozens out there that should go in the motivation section rather than the sales section. If you need motivation, this book is great. But if you are looking for solid advice on how to improve your sales technique, don't waste your money. The book is littered with cute phrases like "Kick your own ass", and "the more you love it, the more you will sell".
I bought the book because there are small nuggets of good information in it. I kept it because I know someday I will need motivation. But I quickly became tired of "Rah-Rah, I'm the best salesman ever, and you suck unless you work harder." Don't get me wrong, everyone could stand to work harder. But that wasn't what I was looking for.
If you want motivation, read this book. If you want solid sales advice, read "SPIN Selling", or "Soft Sell".

Doing Business by the Good Book: Fifty-Two Lessons on Success Sraight from the Bible Review

Doing Business by the Good Book: Fifty-Two Lessons on Success Sraight from the Bible
Average Reviews:

Perhaps if someone less successful in business than David L. Steward and Robert L. Shook wrote this guide book, readers would chuckle over the concept that the Bible offers sage advice on business practices. Business ethics seems an oxymoron as the Golden Rule of Wall St. seems that them with the gold makes the rule (look at who has access to Mr. Bush, Mr. Clinton or those fiefdoms we dub Congress). However, cynicism aside, Mr. Steward and Mr. Shook makes a strong case that those who follow biblical guidance have a very high chance of success.
The authors break the self help book into fifty two topics such as good leadership, empowerment, networking, conviction, etc. Each chapter contains a brief definition, scripture quotes, and examples of success. The advice is solid as the topics are relevant and biblical citations and parables fit quite soundly in today's information age. This is an insightful and interesting book that encourages people to conduct business activities in a positive manner straight from the bible. Ye who doubt must not forget Abraham. He was the leading businessman of his time until he hears a voice in his head. Heeding the advice, he sells the business, relocates and gives the choice beach front property to his nephew. Following that lordly voice in his brain he becomes the leading businessman again.

An indispensable volume that shows how to succeed in business by using the Bible and its lessons as a source of inspiration and guidance n 1990, David L. Steward founded his company, Worldwide Technology, Inc., on a shoestring budget and borrowed money, well aware of the high-risk nature of the venture he was undertaking. Despite the fact that he was a novice entrepreneur, he was certain he would succeed. Steward believed intensely that God wouldn't let him down. Doing Business by the Good Book shares the inspiring lessons culled straight from the Bible, that Steward used to build his privately held billion-dollar company into a global information technology enterprise.

The Six-Figure Second Income: How To Start and Grow A Successful Online Business Without Quitting Your Day Job Review

The Six-Figure Second Income: How To Start and Grow A Successful Online Business Without Quitting Your Day Job

I enjoyed reading this book. I purchased it from Amazon because Jim Cockrum endorsed it in his newsletter (which is how I heard of it). The book basically outlines step by step how to set up an information product business online. The first chapter explains why this business model is ideal for most people, due to low overhead and the almost bottomless demand for information products online. Chapter 2 suggests ways to build a profitable infoproduct quickly. I think they should have explained the "profitable" side of things a bit more explicitly. For example, while many people might have collections of recipes at home they think they could sell online, most people searching for recipes online are searching for FREE information, not an ebook they have to pay for. Ideally, you should create an infoproduct for a market where infoproducts are already selling well. Scanning the categories of products on Clickbank.com is a good way to get ideas for products of your own. If you aren't sure what to create, think about the products that people are already selling on Clickbank, and then come up with a complementary or supplemental product that would be a logical "upsell" to the audience for those products. This is the most important decision you will make, and determines if your product will sell, more than any other factor. Beyond that the book outlines the different content formats you can choose to make, how to set up a website, get traffic and turn your "prospects into buyers." I learned the most from chapter 6, and I think that chapter alone is worth the price of this book. While it doesn't explicitly teach you how to write a sales letter it tells you some important things to consider when setting up your sales page. I think a few sales letter examples and a simple template would have enhanced this chapter a lot, especially for beginners who are new to information marketing online. A separate chapter on outsourcing would have been helpful also. My thoughts are you should probably write rough drafts of your ebook and sales page and then outsource the rewrites to someone more experienced to "clean them up" for you. I prefer vWorker for all my outsourcing, since I have the option to pay for deliverables only, rather than for time. It seems to result in faster turnaround, and since the funds are escrowed, I don't have to release them until I am completely happy with the end product. For beginners, I also recommend using e-Junkie rather than Clickbank or 1shoppingcart. With e-junkie you get payment processing, but they also create expiring download links automatically and I believe they also host your actual product files, so you don't have to create any web pages yourself other than just the sales letter page, with the order button connecting to your e-junkie checkout. That saves time, and also eliminates some of the learning curve with having to create web pages and learning to FTP your files to a download page, as well as not having to learn to install a script to create expiring download links yourself. If you're a beginner and you don't know much about web design you should probably try out Blinkweb's hosting - you get a free domain name and a wysiwyg editor that includes simple sales page templates that are super easy to use, and are designed specifically for information marketers. All you have to do at that point is upload an image of an "add to cart" button and link it to your e-junkie account for checkout. e-Junkie does the rest. If you don't like paying $14.99 a month for hosting and you don't mind the learning curve, then google "Chris Farrell" and sign up for his free "Success Grenade" videos that walk you through web page setup step by step. You'll learn how to FTP your web site, create download and squeeze pages, upload files to your site's hosting account and more. I think Blinkweb + e-Junkie would save you more time and let you get your business up and running a lot faster, but if you don't mind a few months extra work and study, you can learn to do it the "hard way" through Chris Farrell's video series. Overall, "The Six-Figure Second Income" has a lot of good ideas and recommendations, even though I disagree with some of the recommendations in chapter 4, since they aren't very beginner-friendly, and can stymie someone for months before they can get an actual product online. Even if you start with only Blinkweb for hosting/web design, e-Junkie for shopping cart/payment processing, and the basic Aweber account for managing your customer list, it will cost under $40 a month to get going, and takes a lot of the technical stuff off your plate.
