(More customer reviews)I have found many gems in this book over the last couple years. It is organized in a very efficient and clear way (alphabetically by subject, such as Action, Government, Justice, Praying, Learning).
I randomly just thought of a topic to look up to give an example. I picked Hope. Here are a few quotations from that section:
- "Hope is a waking dream" (Aristotle)
- "Now may the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, so that you will abound in hope." (The Bible, Romans 15:13 NASB)
- "There is one thing which gives radiance to everything. It is the idea of something around the corner." (G.K. Chesterton)
There are 10 quotations on the subject of Hope.
One of my favorite things about this work is the wide variety of sources used. The compiler has obviously accumulated a vast amount of information and organized it well.
My impression is that the majoirty of this work has a conservative Christian flavor, but definately not exclusively.
It seems Bob Phillips has distilled quality insight from history and offered it to us in a very usable format. I think it could take nearly a lifetime of study and organization, were one to start from scratch, to compile such a work as this.
Consider Benjamin Franklin's statement under the subject of Time... "Dost thou love life? Then do not squander time, for that is the stuff life is made of."
