Choosing to Cheat: Who Wins When Family and Work Collide? Review

Choosing to Cheat: Who Wins When Family and Work Collide
Average Reviews:

I first heard Andy teach on this subject over a year ago. It's a life-changing and necessary book, and I don't know any family that couldn't benefit from its message.
"Choosing to Cheat" is built on the premise that everyone cheats somewhere - there aren't enough hours for everything. Tragically, it's easier to cheat our families than than to cheat at work. Andy not only tells us why we should cheat at work; he also tells us how. Ironically, cheating at work can make us more productive.
I needed to read this message again, because it's always easy to return to old habits. Highly recommended.

Very good book. A lot of research went into this book and it was very well thought out. The book was deep and the writer had to have divine inspiration to complete this message filled works.

A concise, practical volume that identifies seven basic imperatives for effective leadership: be sure, be focused, be humble, be discerning, be complementary, be uncompromising, and be encouraged. Author Joseph Robinson Jr. draws these imperatives from the life and character of the biblical "wild man," John the Baptist, and then offers concrete illustrations of those characteristics at work in the lives of contemporary leaders, both religious and secular, from Mother Teresa to Michael Jordan, from Pastor Tony Evans to Coach Tony Dungy--as well as characters from movies such as Mr. Holland's Opus, In the Heat of the Night, and Coming to America. The result is a common language and universal framework for discussing leadership in any setting.

A Tale of three Kings: A Study in Brokenness Review

A Tale of three Kings: A Study in Brokenness

Do you work or live with a tyrant? Got a spoiled brat in your life? David did. Had both. He served a crazy king who tried to kill him and had a vain, self-absorbed son who tried to usurp him. Both nearly succeeded.
How David coped with these insane situations with God's love, grace, and wisdom have changed my life. The patience, respect for God, surrender, and trust in the Lord spoke powerfully to me through the years of history between us. David's unique reactions revealed Jesus Christ to me in a new way.
David's struggles dwarfed mine but the lessons of his life challenged me to become a better Christian - a man of honor - a man of God.
Gene Edwards has a gift for cutting through difficult topics on a unique slant. He brings a new level of understanding to old problems, stories, and issues. There were times when reading this book that I had to stop, lay it down, and catch my breath as new revelation washed over me.
A strong recommendation for the thoughtful believer who is willing to go to the next level of faith.

The Principle of the Path: How to Get from Where You Are to Where You Want to Be Review

The Principle of the Path: How to Get from Where You Are to Where You Want to Be

If you could relive your life, what would you change? More importantly, how would you change? Andy Stanley, in The Principle of the Path, gives us a blueprint for a successful life.
This book is not what I expected. When I read that Andy Stanley is a highly successful preacher and pastor in Atlanta, I thought this volume would be full of sermonizing but it is not. Instead, Stanley writes in a conversational style full of stories and humor. This is an easy, delightful narrative that is like chatting over coffee with a good friend.
The Principle of the Path is a self help book for life. Pastor Stanley shares with us his single guiding principle for success and serenity in life. He begins with a relevant story from his own life, explains the principle and then leads us toward implementing that truth in our own lives. Stanley's applications can be useful in our relationships, our finances, our career, and even our parenting.
The wisdom is subtle. When I first read the "Principle" I thought it was a bit simplistic, but the more I read the more profound it became. The Principle and its application is brilliant but practical. Although the author is a Christian minister and often refers to scripture, this book would be useful for anyone who wants to lead a better life. The wisdom is universal.
I highly recommend The Principle of the Path. This has a very valuable message. I intend to give this book to my closest friends.

Let the Children Come: Reimagining Childhood from a Christian Perspective (Families and Faith Series) Review

Let the Children Come: Reimagining Childhood from a Christian Perspective (Families and Faith Series)
Average Reviews:

Bonnie J. Miller-McLemore explores childhood from a Christian perspective. She seeks the historical, theological perspectives of children in Christianity. The writing is simple and easy to understand. She does not write in deep theological terms that would be difficult for readers.
I did find much that what she said to be thought provoking. As one who works in children's ministry and blogs about children's spirituality, I was intrigued by much that she wrote. Throughout the text she offers some great questions to help adults think deeper about children and their spirituality.
She writes compassionately from a feministy theology perspective which influences her thoughts toward children as oppressed and forgotten in the church throughout history. This is a helpful reminder to us today. Most theological research has been done by men which has skewed their perspective on women. A woman who writes from her own perspective of a month is helpful for readers. She finishes her text with a series of questions for adults and parents to consider concerning the faith of their children. These are very helpful for all to explore deeper their children's faith and spiritual development.

In this important and much-needed book, theologian, author, and teacher Bonnie J. Miller-McLemore writes about the struggle to raise children with integrity and faithfulness as Christians in a complex postmodern society. Let the Children Come shows that the care of children is in itself a religious discipline and a communal practice that places demands on both congregations and society as a whole. The author calls for clearer and more defined ways in which Christians can respond to the call to nurture all children (not just their own) as manifestations of God's presence in the world. Miller-McLemore raises and investigates questions that up until now have largely been left unasked, such as: What are the dominant cultural perceptions of children— including religious perceptions— with which parents must grapple? How have Christians defined children and parenting, and how should they today?

Tony Evan's Book of Illustrations: Stories, Quotes, and Anecdotes From More Than 30 Years of Preaching and Public Speaking Review

Tony Evan's Book of Illustrations: Stories, Quotes, and Anecdotes From More Than 30 Years of Preaching and Public Speaking
Average Reviews:

I had a preaching professor in seminary who said if you get one good illustration out of an illustration book, you got your money's worth. Okay, so I got my money's worth out of this book, but not much more. It suffers from several problems. Let's review them.
Many of the illustrations are directly from Tony's life, and as such are pretty soggy and not really transferable. How many congregations want to hear a pastor repeatedly say, "A funny thing happened to Tony Evans awhile back..."
For instance, he tells a story about going to Tennessee for a speaking engagement. The flight was delayed, and when he landed, he had an hour drive ahead of him to get to his destination. He was worried the entire time about being late. The man who picked him up at the airport repeatedly told him not to worry, as the audience would wait. Sure enough, when he got to the engagement, late, no one had left, and the entire audience burst into applause. So-so story, and since it didn't happen to us, how do we drive it home? It just sort of lays there. And it has too many brothers.
Concerning the non-personal illustrations, many are available elsewhere. Worst of all, sometimes Evans says things that I just find offensive. On two separate occasions, he says that God is looking for "groupies." I understand his point: God wants people who worship him with the same fervor they do their favorite entertainer. Still, the language is just tasteless. The word has too much negative baggage. Groupies are usually mindless sycophants.
The positive side of this book is that it might give pastors an idea of how to look for illustrations in their own lives. I have often found that the personal illustrations I come up with are just as good as ones I find in books. So, all in all, this volume is worth a glance, if you can get it cheap. Don't expect too much, and you won't be disappointed. Oh, by the way, the numbers in the index refer to the numbers of the illustrations, not the page number. The illustrations have tiny superscript numberings at the end of each. Just thought you should know.
