In his book 1984, George Orwell described the state of perpetual war in his fictional future society by saying that the war wasn't meant to be won, it was only meant to be continuous. In WHAT'S THE MATTER WITH KANSAS?, Thomas Frank illustrates how, and how effectively, the neoconservative right has implemented Orwell's concepts via a neverending war over culture and values.
Using his home state of Kansas as the model and focal point, Frank asks rhetorically why it is that Kansans so willingly espouse right-wing social issues (creationism, defunding public schools, prayer in schools, pro-life) while simultaneously allowing their state to become economically devastated by Republican free market policies of unfettered, unregulated capitalism. In other words, why do Kansans (and many other Red Staters) vote consistently against their pocketbooks, against their own economic self-interest?
With great specificity, Frank illustrates these behaviors and their devastating economic consequences by describing individuals and communities in Kansas. These are some of the strongest parts of his book, since they demonstrate through real people and real towns how life has changed, and continues to change, under Republican conservative rule. If anything, Frank could use more of these examples, particularly more description of some of the small towns and communities in his state that are dying a slow and tortured economic death. Regardless, the examples given convey the sense that Kansans are voting Red even as they vote themselves economically dead.
Frank correctly ascribes this seemingly self-contradictory behavior to the idea that Conservatives have discovered a means to incite permanent "backlash" among the Red Staters through culture wars. Whatever the issue, whether it's Janet Jackson's right breast or gay marriage in Massachusetts, Conservative politicians whip up fierce indignation and activism by threatening the loss of American moral values to the eastern, intellectual elite who support the denigration of those values and the denial of moral absolutes. And, as Frank points out, despite years of bitter denunciation, almost nothing has changed. The war rages on, but the Conservatives rarely win even a skirmish.
By focusing attention on culture issues, the Conservatives not only distract their followers from economic concerns, they remove capitalism itself as an issue. For Red Staters, capitalism is a natural force, and free markets are an absolute good. Concerns about environment, globalization, estate taxes, Wal-Martization, health and welfare all disappear, since laissez-faire is an inviolable principle. Capitalism cannot and must not be regulated in this worldview, and any restrictions and regulations designed to "thwart" it are necessarily wrong if not evil. The fact that culture itself -- MTV, Hollywood, Howard Stern, Fear Factor -- is a capitalist product that follows the same profit motivations goes unnoticed. In Kansas, as in most places, there is no connection in people's minds between culture and capitalism.
Frank has put his thumb directly on the source of America's current problems, the so-called Red State, Blue State divide. As I write this review on July 9, 2004, the United States remains embroiled in Iraq and Afghanistan, our standing in the world is at an all-time low, Tom Ridge is warning against another imminent Al-Qaeda attack, the country is hemorrhaging jobs, young kids can less and less afford to go to college, gas and milk prices have soared to all-time highs, working men and women can't make ends meet even with two or more jobs, millions are without health insurance, the President claims the power to arrest and detain anyone he chooses without legal representation, and our education system is becoming enslaved to meaningless standardized tests. What solutions does our Republican President and Republican legislative branch offer? The Senate is too busy preparing for an all-out legislative war over a Constitutional amendment banning gay marriage to worry about real problems. The newspaper every day tells us just how correct Thomas Frank is in his analysis. Kansas isn't just Kansas, Kansis is us!
Anyone who truly wants to understand today's upside-down political world, who wants to understand how middle class people can enthusiastically support tax cuts that give them nothing and the rich more money and power, should read WHAT'S THE MATTER WITH KANSAS? Mr. Frank offers clear and straightforward explanation of this bizarre phenomenon, and his insights and implications should send chills down the spines of those who espouse a free, fair, and open society. To quote Frank's closing line: that the "fever-dream of martyrdom that Kansas follows today...invites us all to join in, to lay down our lives so others might cash out at the top; to renounce forever our middle-American prosperity in pursuit of a crimson fantasy of middle-American righteousness." How much better can it be said?

Baldoni's "Great Communication Secrets Of Great Leaders" is a well-researched and highly readable "how-to" of leadership communications. This author knows his material, and presents it through the interesting device of linking principles to some of the world's leading communicators. It was refreshing to read a business-centered book that focus specifically on the communication aspects of leadership, which Baldoni obviously understands quite well. As a former professional actor, I also enjoyed how the author links dynamic presentations to effective performance. This book is well worth the modest cover price. A definite "buy!"

It's hard to put this book down. Through a bit of serendipity, Ulrich Boser inherited a famed art detective's files on the Gardner Heist. He plunged into this mysterious case, and brings us along for the ride as he explores not only what happened, but why the artwork meant so much to so many both before and after the heist. As the author treads ever closer to cracking the case, you remember that this isn't fiction and start to believe he might get the paintings back - but you also wonder if he might find trouble in this shady underworld. A fascinating read.

Reinventing Schools, Reforming Teaching: From Political Visions to Classroom Reality Review

Reinventing Schools, Reforming Teaching: From Political Visions to Classroom Reality

For anyone familiar with the education scene in the UK, or anyone interest in the vagaries of policy development, this book provides an insightful but cautionary tale. As one who has spent a considerable amount of time observing the effects of British policy development at the school level, I often wondered how so many good ideas could go so wrong. Clearly educational policy has less to do with enhancing the learning of all students and more to do with ensuring the political success of certain individuals and their political parties. This well researched, clearly written narrative of the policy scene in the UK should be compulsory reading for policy developers at all levels in all countries (even Mr. Arne Duncan might learn a thing or two but I doubt it). It reaffirms once again what Michael Fullan wrote some years ago - what is clarity at the top is often clutter down below. The clear message for policy developers is let the teachers in on the game. Unless the people who deliver education buy in, your policy will either be stillborn or experience a slow lingering death.

The Fallacy of Fine-Tuning: Why the Universe Is Not Designed for Us Review

The Fallacy of Fine-Tuning: Why the Universe Is Not Designed for Us
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Vic Stenger is an experimental physicist who, since retiring, has turned his attention to metaphysics. He has written eight books, six of which are on the general theme of the misuse of science to support religion, alternative medicine, and other superstitions. The "fine tuning" of the title refers to the idea that values of various physical quantities could not be even slightly different than they are in our universe and still permit life to exist. Some religionists have seized on this idea as evidence that a creator god "fine tuned" those values just for us. And even many agnostic and atheist scientists have been impressed by the fine tuning of some parameters like the cosmological constant.
Stenger examines each of the fine tuned parameters that have been touted as essential to a life-friendly universe. He brings to bear a sweeping knowledge of physics and explains why each claim of fine-tuning is either entirely misconceived or is not nearly so "fine" as claimed. You can learn quite of bit of physics reading this book and even better you can learn to think like a physicist. The presentation can be followed by anyone who took high-school physics, but Stenger also includes some mathematical exposition that requires calculus to fully appreciate. Here the reader needs to watch out for some typos in the equations. If they look wrong or confusing, check online. The physics and mathematics is all standard stuff and easily checked. If you have Stenger's purely physics book, "The Comprehensible Cosmos" take a look in it.
In looking over reviews of Stenger's other books, I see that he is criticized for not proving that God doesn't exist or that some fad or superstition is false. I expect this book will draw the same criticism. This is a misunderstanding of what he is doing. He doesn't propose to prove that a creator God doesn't exist. In fact he has said that the god of deism, a creator who doesn't meddle in his creation, is a possible god. What he does prove is there is no evidence for a creator god; and specifically in this book, no evidence of fine tuning. Everything about the universe looks as one might expect if the universe arose by natural processes out of nothing.
Stenger briefly considers the idea of a multiverse, the idea that any natural process producing our universe would, absent some special principle, also produce arbitrarily many other universes. This would answer the question as to why the universe is fine-tuned for life: the answer being that of course life occurs in those universes friendly to life. Although Stenger doesn't reject the multiverse idea, he considers it unnecessary for answering the fine-tuning argument because he has shown there is no fine-tuning. Furthermore, he notes that the Bayesian inference argument of Mike Ikeda and Bill Jeffery shows that any observation that the universe is fine-tuned could only count as evidence *against* a god.
In the interest of full disclosure, I should note that my name appears in the acknowledgements of this book.

Limitless: A Novel Review

Limitless: A Novel

Very good book, reminds me of a gritty, unhappy, version of "The R-Master" by Gordon Dickson. The one thought that kept circling through my mind as I read this novel (in one sitting) was: "Knowing all of this, would I still take such a drug?". In my case the answer would "Yes", so I have to wonder if I should be more sympathetic towards athletes who use performance-enhancing drugs, or indeed, anyone who uses any substance for simple pleasure. Highly recommended.

NOW A MAJOR MOTION PICTURE FROM RELATIVITY MEDIAA burnout at thirty-five, months behind on his book, low on cash, and something of a loser, Eddie Spinola could use a shot in the arm. One day he randomly runs into Vernon, his ex-wife's brother, and his ex-dealer. Now employed by a shadowy pharmaceutical company, Vernon has something that might help: a new designer drug that stimulates brain function. One pill and Eddie is hooked. His book is finished within days; he learns and synthesizes information at a frightening rate; and he can go a long time without sleep or food. Naturally, he begins to play the stock market. But when Vernon turns up dead, Eddie makes off with the only stash of the drug in existence. Then come the side effects: black-outs, blinding headaches, and violent outbursts he can't seem to remember. Alan Glynn's Limitless is a high-concept thriller for this Adderall age, and a haunting meditation on the allure and the curse of human potential.

The American Directory Of Writer's Guidelines: More Than 1,600 Magazine Editors And Book Publishers Explain What They Are Looking For From Freelancers

The American Directory of Writer's Guidelines is an excellent companion to Writer's Market and an essential reference book for freelance writers. Some of the included publications do cross-over, but for the most part, their different. And, it's great that a new edition has been released (2006).
The nice thing about The American Directory of Writer's Guidelines is that it provides both contact information and writer's guidelines for the listed publications.
Another thing I like about this reference book is the organization. It has publications organized alphabetically and then has the lists of categories in the back. It's much easier to find publications.
The downside of The American Directory of Writer's Guidelines is that it isn't updated annually. This makes using it a little more difficult because you have to do a cross reference to see if publications still exist, if the contacts still work there, and to make sure the pub hasn't moved. Of course, every query sent should be verified in this way before you send it, so you should be doing these things anyway.
