Oneness With All Life: Inspirational Selections from A New Earth Review

Oneness With All Life: Inspirational Selections from A New Earth
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The first thing I noticed about Eckhart Tolle's Oneness with All Life: Inspirational Selections from a New Earth, is that it is a beautifully bound hard cover book (ribbon bookmark included,)with an old-time feel. The inside is beautifully laid out with flower illustrations. It actually conveys a feeling of peacefulness to hold the book.
"Your inner purpose is to awaken," says Tolle. This is the essence of the book, and what my own spiritual teacher tries to instill in her students. Each chapter works on this lofty spiritual plane.
Tolle recommends that you read A New Earth before Oneness with all Life, as this book is a distilled version of the first and contains fairly advanced spiritual lessons. He suggests reading a random section or single chapter at a time. The point is to read, reflect, and allow the messages to resonate within your soul.
"The informational content of this book is of relatively little importance," he writes. "You read it not so much to learn something new, but to go deeper, become more present, awaken out of the stream of incessant and compulsive thinking."
This sums up the book for me: "If you come across passages in this book that you feel are powerful, I want you to realize that what you are feeling is your own spiritual power. That is to say you are in your essence."
This book is like having your own spiritual teacher to turn to whenever you need some clarity.
A typical passage: "How to be at peace now. By making peace with the present moment."
Highly recommended.

What About Now: Reminders for Being in the Moment

I found this book by chance searching for books on DBT. Part of DBT is mindfullness-being in the moment. This book is perfect. I bookmarked on my new Kindle about 20 that are relevant for me on a regular basis. I love that they are short (1 Page) excerpts from her other books that can be read in a short period of time, hence almost used as a daily guide. Plan to look into her other books. If you want to quiet the brain and it's negative chatter- then this book is a good place to start.

Blind Spots: Why Smart People Do Dumb Things Review

Blind Spots: Why Smart People Do Dumb Things
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I must start by saying I only read the first 65 or so pages (about 1/3rd of the book) before the author lost my attention. She filled the first several pages with a shallow discussion of commom tenets your parents or teachers probably already shared with you. I paraphrase: 'Stop and think before you act'; 'What you don't know CAN hurt you'; 'Don't miss the forest for the trees.'
In the subsequent chapters, she attempted to dive more deeply into the reasons these tenets ring true. As I read through the discussion, I came away with the distinct impression that I was stuck in an entry level class on human behavior at a community college. Her analysis lacked depth; her analogies were flat or did not fit. She offered little insight into an intriguing topic.
Based on the reviews I read before purchasing the book, I expected more rigor and critical analysis than I found. The book's concept has promise. Unfortunately, the author did not deliver.
Because I was intrigued by the topic, I've continued to look for books that could better help me understand common blind spots. Although narrowly focused on the idea of self-deception, I thought "Mistakes Were Made (But Not by Me)" gave a thorough analysis of a common blind spot many of us experience.
I also found meaningful insights about the physiology of the brain that creates some of our blind spots in "On Being Certain." The author's statements were supported by conclusions drawn from peer-reviewed studies - the type of rigor I expected but did not find in 'Blind Spots.'

Living Loving and Learning Review

Living Loving and Learning

I was 17, depressed, and alone waiting for a song to come on MTV so that I could get enough guts to slit my wrists. When the song didn't come on the t.v. after hours of waiting, I went up to my room and tore everything apart. Posters came off the walls, blankets were ripped off the beds, curtains were pulled off their rods. My room was a complete disaster. After my intense cry, I looked up and the ONLY thing left on a bookshelf was this book. Out of pure curiosity I picked it up and read a few pages. At first I thought the book was a joke but yet I didn't put it down. I tried doing a few of the exercises in the book - what did I have to lose - I was going to off myself anyways. The next morning I looked in the mirror and said outloud that I love myself. I laughed and it was the first time I had laughed in months.
This is a true account of how this book 'saved my life'. What if the book had fallen like everything else in my fit of frustration? What if that book wasn't in my room at all that day? Who knows. What I do know is that working through the exercises in the book and following the author's advice, I was able to come out of my adolescent depression and evolve into a happy, well-adjusted adult and I will be forever grateful to Mr. Buscaglia.

Spiritual Writing: From Inspiration To Publication Review

Spiritual Writing: From Inspiration To Publication
Average Reviews:

Spiritual Writing is the clearest, most helpful book I've ever read about getting nonfiction books published. Despite the title, I think it's perfect for anyone who is trying to publish an unusual, personal book.
The authors talk about the special challenges we face when we tackle subjects close to our hearts -- how to self-edit and make our ideas marketable. They take readers all the way through the process: crafting the book, writing query letters, proposals, agents, publishers. They also include a helpful guide to the differences between major publishers and independent publishers -- from the author's perspective. The resource list in the back (spirit-friendly agents and publishers, online resources for writers, etc.) is great, too. I found the book straight-forward and encouraging.

Question Your Thinking, Change The World: Quotations from Byron Katie Review

Question Your Thinking, Change The World: Quotations from Byron Katie
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This may be one of the most profound books I've read. If Katie's approach to life resonates with you ("The Work"), this book will have a special place on your bookshelf.
This book isn't about "information". If you need "information", look elsewhere. This isn't snackfood. It's not about a quick-fix to problems in your life. (Go see your psychologist.) It's about seeing life in a whole new life-altering perspective.
The book takes you through Katie's laser-focused process of systematically destroying everything you thought you knew about life and simplifying it down to it's beautiful core. The book works its way around a number of topics, but the theme always comes back to "The Work", a simple set of questions that allows you to really see what is going on around you.
It's about how to wade through life without the weight that is currently on your shoulders. She takes you through an amazing journey that will show you that even in the worst of circumstances that the only villain is your own thoughts.
I've read all of Katie's work. I've met Katie in person. I love that this stuff isn't "pie-in-the-sky" pink-crystals-and-new-age-music stuff. It's real. It's very specific. It has changed real people's lives. And if you let it flood your mind, it will change you forever in a positive way.
To be specific, this guide is a compilation of many bits from her other books. However, because they are in small bites, they really strike you deep in your heart. I absolutely loved this book and plan to re-read it regularly.

In this powerful book of quotations, Byron Katie talks about the most essential issues that face us all—love, sex, and relationships; health, sickness, and death; parents and children; work and money; and self-realization. The profound, lighthearted wisdom embodied within is not theoretical; it is absolutely authentic.
Not only will this book help you on many specific issues, but it will point you toward your own wisdom and will encourage you to question your own mind, using the four simple yet incredibly powerful questions of Katie's process of self-inquiry, called The Work. Katie is a living example of the clear, all-embracing love that is our true identity. Because she has thoroughly questioned her own mind, her words shine with the joy of understanding.
"People used to ask me if I was enlightened," she says, "and I would say, 'I don't know anything about that. I'm just someone who knows the difference between what hurts and what doesn't.' I'm someone who wants only what is. To meet as a friend each concept that arose turned out to be my freedom."

Life Is a Verb: 37 Days to Wake Up, Be Mindful, and Live Intentionally Review

Life Is a Verb: 37 Days to Wake Up, Be Mindful, and Live Intentionally
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
In the beginning, this book really annoyed me.
Here's the set-up: "In October of 2003, my stepfather was diagnosed with lung cancer. He died 37 days later."
Tragic. Though I can't imagine, I can empathize. But then comes the goopy stuff:
"The time frame of 37 days made an impression on me. We often live as if we have all the time in the world, but the definite-ness of 37 days was striking. So short a time, as if all the regrets and joys of a life would barely have time to register before time was up...."
"I tried to reconcile the fact that this fearful death was happening with the understanding that I needed to make something good out of it. What emerged was a commitment to ask myself this question every morning: What would I be doing today if I only had 37 days to live?"
Well, you know the answer. Savor every second. "Enjoy every sandwich," as the dying Warren Zevon put it. Buddhism 101. The punch line of a million self-help books.
So was I moved by Ms. Digh's approach to her theoretical last 37 days --- pumping out reams of writing so her young daughters would have some idea who Mom was? No. And not because I'm hard-hearted. It's just that I've heard all this. Many times, most recently in "Improv Wisdom", which I consider the last word on Showing Up and Being Here.
But I stumbled on, past the beautifully designed pages with the lovely art and the super-sincere poems by poets I'd never heard of, until I achieved the entrance to Part One. "Inhabit Your Story." The predictable moral arrived on schedule: "Find the change you can make and make it."
On to Part Two: "The Six Practices for Intentional Living." Which includes: "Dance in your car", followed by "carry a small grape" and "always rent the red convertible" and "say wow when you see as bus".
What was I doing in this Birkenstock gulag, surrounded by Good Thoughts?
But then I hit the story of Ms. Digh sitting on a plane next to a boor, and how they became close friends. The next page brought another compelling story. The Jungian analyst Marion Woodman, sick in India, is bothered by a large brown woman who crowds her on the couch of the hotel lobby. For days. On the fourth day, the woman's husband shows up to say he had been sending his wife there to pour her warmth and life energy into the body of the dying Woodman. The woman had, Woodman decided, saved her life. And then came the story of Digh's college lover, back in 1978. Richard was African-American. Her parents were less than thrilled. The relationship withered. Flash-cut to now. Richard is now Amanda. He wears his old girlfriend's earrings.
Tell me enough stories, and one will be an arrow to the heart. Richard-and-Patti was, and then, suddenly, they all were --- and advice like "Go to a black barbershop to get your hair cut if you're a Caucasian" no longer seemed monumentally trite. Reading on, I learned about hikaru dorodango --- shiny Japanese mud balls --- and how to make better ones simply by making more. I learned how to disagree by saying, elegantly, "I don't see the truth in that." I was reminded what a dollar can mean to the person ahead of you in the supermarket line. I encountered some very wise quotations, like this, from Eric Hoffer: "You can discover what your enemy fears by observing the means he uses to frighten you."
In short, as I read on, I found myself getting sharper and smarter. I considered why it might be better to make a mistake --- and learn from it --- than strain to get everything right. And I read the obituary Patti Digh wrote recently for her father --- who died in 1980, when she was in her teens --- and misted over.
The stories in the news these days are so big. Tectonic plates are moving. History is being made. But then, it always is. "Life is a Verb" is a reminder that our lives are bigger than the stories in the headlines. A small thought? Not to me. Now I have to go back to the beginning and start again....

In October 2003, Patti Digh's stepfather was diagnosed with lung cancer. He died 37 days later. The timeframe made an impression on her. What emerged was a commitment to ask herself every morning: What would I be doing today if I had only 37 days left to live? The answers changed her life and led to this new kind of book. Part meditation, part how-to guide, part memoir, Life is a Verb is all heart.
Within these pages-enhanced by original artwork and wide, inviting margins ready to be written in-Digh identifies six core practices to jump-start a meaningful life: Say Yes, Trust Yourself, Slow Down, Be Generous, Speak Up, and Love More. Within this framework she supplies 37 edgy, funny, and literary life stories, each followed by a "do it now" 10-minute exercise as well as a practice to try for 37 days-and perhaps the rest of your life.

All I Really Need to Know I Learned from Watching Star Trek Review

All I Really Need to Know I Learned from Watching Star Trek
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is a fun little book chock full of wise sayings gleaned from episodes of the original Star Trek. The original was not a space opera, it was a futurized series of life's lessons, very carefully crafted. Each episode had a heavy-duty message embedded within--and not very hard to spot either. This book does not necessarily include these thematic messages, but it does excerpt a number of pithy, humorous quotes from the characters. It is highly reminiscent of a poster my dentist has in his office of Everything I Need to Know I Learned in Kindergarten. I expect there is also a book with that name, but I haven't read it. These words of wisdom also remind me of Dr. Akin's famous "Laws of Spacecraft Design" which you can access on the internet. With his permission, I used several in my book "The Knowledge Management and Information Technology Encyclopedia" (published by the Government and not for sale). My favorite submits from Marinaccio's delightful book are:Gossip is often confused with conversation. In fact it often takes the place of conversation. Take gossip away from some folks and they would turn into mimes. p.61
When everyone is responsible, ultimately no one is responsible. p.52
Idiot-proofing is also genius-proofing. p.94
Great people talk about ideas. Average people talk about things. Small people talk about people. p.61
Attitude is the top priority; after attitude, talent or gifts are important. p.64
As Yogi Berra, the great Yankees catcher, once said, "You can observe a lot, just by watching." p.23
A person who understands a rule knows when to break it. p.50
Competent people know which rules to follow and which to ignore ... when people of good judgement are allowed to exercise their insights, good results usually follow. When people=s hands are tied, they are ineffective. p.94
The more complex the mind, the greater the need for the simplicity of play. pp. 8, 53, & 54
Difficult choices expose how we truly feel. What we believe deep inside. p.39
The most important time to help someone is when they need it. p.8
For man, Utopia is endless challenge. p.17

This book is filled with quotes and sayings, all inspirational, all meaningful.
This morning I felt angry at myself for not doing something as well as I'd expected. I opened the book and one of the first quotes I saw was, "Release the need to blame anyone, including yourself. We're all doing our best with the understanding, knowledge, and awareness we have." -Louise L. Hay
This moved me, how well it fit me at that moment. I took to the quote and forgave myself, realizing that it is useless to try to be perfect.
I recommend this book to anyone who gets inspired by quotes. If you are one of those people that needs to read a story to be inspired, this is not a book for you. But if you like to open a book anywhere and read a quote and be inspired, buy this book right now.

I am a college student, and I believe that Whelan has done a great job with this book. I received a copy of Generation WTF before it came out, and I have been using the book for about two months now. As a college student, I can tell you before I read this book I had no idea who Dale Carnegie or David Bach was, and I would have never known their ideas if I didn't read this book. In a world where we are being told to operate at 100mph and do so many things at once, this book slows it all down for us. Setting the goals, preparing, and figuring yourself out are all things that need to be done to be successful and are all overlooked these days. One part that I really found meaningful was creating a "personal mission statement". This last year I have been trying to figure out where I want to go and what I want to do after college, and I have been all over the place. When I figure out what my core values are and my sense of purpose, I believe figuring out what direction to take will be very simple. I am so happy and thankful that there is finally a book that gives advice directed at my generation. Generation WTF is not like other self help books, it compiles great advice I would have not otherwise known about, and makes it relevant and useful to me and my generation today.

We all know what "WTF" usually stands for: it's an exclamation of frustration and anger, and it's an understandable reaction to the tough new economic realities that have hit young adults harder than any other group. WTF happened to promises of a bright future? What happened to the jobs? And what do we do now that the rules have changed?

Recent college grads were raised in a time of affluence and entitlement, lulled into thinking that a golden future would just happen. With few role models to teach values like thrift, perseverance, and self-control, young adults are ill-equipped to cope with sacrifice and failure, and their dismal employment prospects are merely the most visible symptom of greater challenges.

Fortunately, it's not too late to change course. This optimistic, introspective, and technologically savvy generation already possesses many of the tools they need to thrive—if only they learn to harness the necessary skills for success.

In Generation WTF, Christine Whelan does just that. Dr. Whelan, one of the foremost authorities on the history of the self-help genre, worked with more than one hundred young people to test and tweak the very best old-school advice and personalize it for the modern twenty-something. After a decade of researching the industry—and years advising "WTFers" as they struggle to make their way in the "real world"—Dr. Whelan knows firsthand what advice works and what Generation WTF has to offer.

Rather than focusing on the frustration that "WTF" usually stands for, Dr. Whelan leads the charge to reclaim the acronym as a battle cry for a positive future: Generation WTF will be a wise, tenacious, and fearless generation, strengthened by purpose and hope. This practical new guide will show these WTFers the way to success and instill lasting habits that will serve them well in both good times and bad.

Serving Productive Time: Stories, Poems, and Tips to Inspire Positive Change from Inmates, Prison Staff, and Volunteers Review

Serving Productive Time: Stories, Poems, and Tips to Inspire Positive Change from Inmates, Prison Staff, and Volunteers
Average Reviews:

I ordered this book last month for a prisoner in California, and he has already sent me a review of it. This is what he wrote:
"I just finished reading 'Serving Productive Time' and the stories are inspiring - some of them are very much like things I could say about my own life and stirred emotions in me (yes, he cried!). At the end of each chapter there is a questionnaire/exercise that you can do, so the reader can interact with the book. The book is well-written and put together, and while it has a lot of Christian stories, there are also secular and other religious viewpoints acknowledged, so even a non-Christian could read the book without taking 'offense'. The book has contact information for most of the people who contributed stories to it, which is good, as even though some are in prison there are a few that I plan on contacting. Each chapter also has contact info for outreach programs (a few that I am also contacting) and short sections on topics such as 'selecting a college or university'. I enjoyed reading this, it was very uplifting and I recommend it for other prisoners that want idea's on how they can serve their time productively. I only wish I had more copies of it to share with other inmates - my copy is already being passed around!"

Freedom: Credos from the Road Review

Freedom: Credos from the Road
Average Reviews:

On February,2007,I submitted a review on "Hell's Angles" by Sonny Barger; where he writes all about his life as the leader of The Hell's Angles.
In this book, Barger reveals the ideals and character that enabled him to remain at the top of a lifestyle that is as tough as any imaginable.
While few would want to emulate the life Barger chose to live, the principles that he followed are no different than those followed by others that attain and hold onto the heights that others have followed;regardless of the "career" they have chosen.
It is hard to believe, that the very same principles Sonny Barger discusses, are essentially the same found in books, seminars or whatever;of the leading motivational gurus.
Barger is a very coherent communicator and when he explains these principles through the eyes and life of a Biker;there is no doubt left as to what he is saying.Berger shows that ;while the media portrays the world of the Hell's Angles as a world that prevails by muggings, fistfights, extreme loyalities, abuses of every kind, respect, strength, determination, etc.; being and maintaining leadership in a Motorcycle Gang ;differ from being a Corporate ,or any other, leader; in details..not principles.
The book is presented as 50 Principles, each different and distinct .
Here is just an indication of the principles Berger discusses;
"Treat Me Good,I'll Treat You Better.Treat Me Bad,I'll Treat You
Worse."
"An Organization Can't Be All Chiefs."
"Stay Alert In The Pack. What Happens To You Happens To The Rider
Behind You."
"If You Want To Travel Fast,Travel Light."
"Early Is On Time,On Time Is Late."
"Cut Down On Criminals By Cutting Down On Laws."If You Can't Change
The Players,Then Change The Game."
"Learn From The Past,Don't Live There."
"Don't Live For A Good Funeral.
"When You Got Nothing To Prove,Just Put It On Cruise Control."
"Individuality Is The Most Precious Freedom.
"You Gotta Learn To Listen,You Gotta Listen To Learn."
Not the sort of thing one would expect from the Leader of The Hell's Angles Motorcycle Club ;but impossible to dispute.
