The Portable Atheist, edited by Christopher Hitchens, is a great selection of how atheism has transformed into what it is today. Hitchens' introduction itself is an astounding tour de force that should not be skipped. In his introduction alone, Hitchen's lays out the foundation and positive attributes of atheism. This is crucial as many people have the common misunderstanding that atheists are pessimists or discontented. He also makes the genuinely important point that in order to believe in one of the three major monotheisms, you have to believe that the heavens watched our species for at least one hundred and fifty thousand years with "indifference, and then- and only in the last six thousand years at the very least - decided that it was time to intervene as well as redeem." He concedes that it is preposterous to believe such a heinous thing - for it would be cruel if true. His introduction is intelligent, convincing and witty - and it doesn't stop there.
The selections in this book show the evolution of atheism (or at least nontheism) from early critics of religion such as: Benedict De Spinoza, Thomas Hobbes and David Hume to more of a middle stage (Darwin, George Eliot, Mark Twain and Bertrand Russell) and then to modern-day critics like: Richard Dawkins, Sam Harris, Steven Weinberg, Daniel Dennett, Carl Sagan, Victor Stenger, Ayaan Hirsi Ali, and many more. Another great thing is the book is helpfully arranged in chronological order. All beliefs aside, the selections in this book are powerfully argued and well written. I'd recommend it to anyone with a hunger for the truth and an open mind.

Bolker's approach is tailored specifically for writers and those who want to write. She hits all the difficult issues, offers many perspectives, and overall encourages and supports the serious writer. This is a book to pick up if you want to write, and a book to consult whenever you have trouble writing. Having worked for years as a psychological counselor for blocked writers, Bolker knows her topic and shares her insight. This collection is, imho, the best of its kind.

Bonk: The Curious Coupling of Science and Sex Review

Bonk: The Curious Coupling of Science and Sex
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This a truly great tale of a first-hand look at science and sex from both the inside and the outside! Mary Roach provides a humorous and often very personal view--both as a participant and observer--of humans, animals, and mechanical devices: there is much that you would never have imagined, and perhaps would rather never of heard of at all. She and her husband Ed have sex in a 20-inch diameter MRI tube in the interests of science. The doctor looks on, makes suggestions, and finally tells Ed "You may ejaculate now". The author also recounts the experiments by Kinsey is his attic many years ago and tries to track down the film footage.
The author's great sense of humor needs to be read to be believed. She spares no one, and particularly not herself or her husband. She travels to Taiwan to watch an implant operation. In one of the funniest parts[and this says a lot, since the book will have you howling a lot] she goes to Denmark to watch artificial insemination of sows. We know this happens with cows, and you might suppose that there's not much difference with pigs, but you'd be wrong, very wrong indeed. Suffice it to say that the best results occur, when, among other things best not mentioned here, the AI person lies down on the sow's back and fondles her teats during the process. You may never regard your morning sausage quite the same way again.
The author has a lot of asides that are a delight to read. If you usually skip the footnotes in a book, you'll miss a lot here. You'll learn a lot--for all the things that might seem frivolous, but which are not, the book is a scientific one. Roach has a curiosity, an appetite for knowledge, and has the capability that perhaps most scientists do not have, which is to mix science and humor. Stephen Gould was able to do this, but his humor was not as pervasive--his writing is, at a guess, 95% science at 5% humor, whereas with Roach it's more like 50-50. Martin Gardner's great Fads and Fallacies in the Name of Science may be the closest similar work to Roach's book. This book is certainly not for everyone, and there are those who will be deeply offended, but for most it should be a real treat to read!

Marketing Your Dreams: Business and Life Lessons from Bill Veeck, Baseball's Promotional Genius Review

Marketing Your Dreams: Business and Life Lessons from Bill Veeck, Baseball's Promotional Genius
Average Reviews:

Before I edited this book - yes, my name is in this book as the editor - I knew who Pat Williams was/is and I knew a little about Bill Veeck. I expected this to be all about baseball and Veeck's oddball promotions. But this book goes way beyond that. Baseball is merely an afterthought; just something to help exemplify ways you can enhance your life. Williams shows you how you can think "outside the box" and expand your ideas to go beyond what's already being done. I found several useful items that I have tried - with some success - to incorporate into my own life. Life is a process. You aren't going to reach the top in one day. But this book is a great tool in helping you make more out of life than you thought possible. This is a comedic, dramatic look at Bill Veeck, his life as well as your life and our places in this world. I hope people will enjoy this book as much as I do.

Bill Veeck marketed, promoted, and sold baseball like no one before him and like no one since. Influenced and inspired by the classic sports book Veeck: As in Wreck, veteran author and motivational speaker Pat Williams has penned his 19th book, Marketing Your Dreams: Business and Life Lessons from Bill Veeck, Baseball's Marketing Genius. Williams, senior vice president of the NBA's Orlando Magic, insists that Marketing Your Dreams isn't a Bill Veeck biography; instead, it's a book about success, a book about one of the most relentless and fascinating personalities in the history of organized sports. It's a book about extracting Veeck's traits and concentrating them into their purest form so that the reader can pull the same kind of inspiration from the master that Williams did.

Cash In on the Obama $3 Trillion Spending Plan: How to make large amounts of money by conducting business with or receiving grants from federal, state, and local governments Review

Cash In on the Obama $3 Trillion Spending Plan: How to make large amounts of money by conducting business with or receiving grants from federal, state, and local governments

It took me about 30 minutes to read this very short book and I felt like the author is the one cashing in on the Obama spending plan by publishing a book with very little detailed information.
I'd recommend another book called "Winning Government Contracts: How Your Small Business can Find and Secure Federal Contracts Up To $100,000". I ordered both at the same time and found that title to be FAR superior and much more detailed and geared to be a reference if you actually want to start doing business with the government. "Cash In..." was very light in reference and it serves mostly to highlight a few major topics, but offers little advice on how to properly position yourself to win business. I'd say pass on this title.

The Nuremberg Nazi Trial: Excerpts From the Testimony of Herman Goering, Albert Speer, Auschwitz Commandant Rudolf Hoess, and Others Review

The Nuremberg Nazi Trial: Excerpts From the Testimony of Herman Goering, Albert Speer, Auschwitz Commandant Rudolf Hoess, and Others
Average Reviews:

This is a collection of excerpts from the trial transcripts that will stir emotions while also making you think. Was this an exercise by the victors to get revenge from a ruthless enemy that started an unnecessary global disaster or an effort to send a message to future amoral leaders that their crimes would not go unpunished. While reading the book it becomes clear that the trial meant different things to different people. From Jackson's clear and logical opening statement to Goering's attempt to save his neck by avoiding direct questions and adding commentary to redirect the court's attention, this book was hard to put down. This is raw history with no spices added. Enjoy it, learn from it and draw your own conclusions.
