I have developed several hundred websites over the last decade, optimized them for Google, and have literally made millions for my clients. I'm always looking for a new edge in advertising, for myself and for my clients.
Ca$hvertising offers that edge. I was skeptical when I noticed that the book had only five-star ratings, I wondered if the reviews were fake. By the time I was halfway through the second chapter, I realized that this book absolutely delivered.
Whether your focus is on print ads, or in web promotion like myself, Ca$hvertising breaks down WHY people respond to certain ads. Once the author explains why people buy, he offers ideas on how you can make those people your customers. Whitman explains exactly how you can tap into the desires that all humans are naturally born with. These aren't theories or assumptions, he backs these techniques up with concrete psychological studies.
The second chapter, on the 17 principles of consumer psychology, is worth its weight in gold. All humans are born with a built-in set of desires, and the author explains exactly how you can tap into them. While most of the book is geared towards print advertising, I found that a great deal of it could be applied towards internet marketing. Plus, the guy is downright funny, and the book is written in a conversational tone that makes you forget that you're actually learning something.
Let me cut to the chase. Every day that you don't own this book, you're losing money. Buy this book today, and it will teach you how to persuade people to pay for your product or service.

As the co-author of this book, I have to thank the amazing story contributors who wrote deep and moving stories about their journey through breast cancer in order to help those who have been newly diagnosed, their families and friends. This book would not have been possible without their courage, strength, and humor. Yes, there are a lot of funny stories in here too. It was an honor to work with such talented and generous women survivors (and one man) who are all surviving and thriving. This book is inspiring, it gives you a lift and lets you know that as you go through the often scary treatments for breast cancer, you are not alone.

The Art of Possibility: Transforming Professional and Personal Life Review

The Art of Possibility: Transforming Professional and Personal Life
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
'. . . The objective of this book is to provide . . . the means to lift off from . . . struggle and sail into a vast universe of possibility.'
Benjamin Zander is the conductor of The Boston Philharmonic and is well known for his orchestra's passionate performances. Rosamund Stone Zander is an executive coach, family therapist, and private practitioner who brings enormous psychological perspective to enhancing human behavior. They have written a fascinating book in which they alternate as voices in sharing principles and examples in the form of compelling stories.
They have striven to make what they share ' . . . simple, not easy.' The idea is to help you create in yourself and in others 'transformational' improvements.
They share a series of perspectives designed to improve your understanding of what and where the potential is.
First, humans tend to focus on very few things, missing most of what is going on around them. By shifting focus, you will see many opportunities for the first time. Much of this book is designed to do that for you. You will visit our old friend the nine dot square and be reminded that connecting all of the dots in four lines without lifting your writing instrument from the paper requires you to go outside the box that we mentally draw at the circumference of the dots. Be careful about your assumptions! They can fence you in!
Second, measurements can cause us to focus too narrowly on where we are today and encourage scarcity thinking -- the glass is half empty. The Zanders encourage thinking about the glass as half full, citing the well-known perspective of optimism as being empowering. This can help you 'step into a university of possibility.' I like to call this pursuing the ideal practice.
Third, if you assume that people will do well and help them see how they can, they will. Mr. Zander gives every student an A in his class, and simply requests that the student write a paper to tell what they will do to deserve the A. This gets the students focused on excellence, and takes away the tension that harms accomplishment.
Fourth, as a mindset, think of your role as 'being a contributor.' 'You are a gift to others.' How could that change what you do? As someone who thinks that way now, I find it a very useful perspective, and was glad to see it in the book.
Fifth, lead from any chair. This is a reference to involving everyone. Mr. Zander asks his players to write down how he could improve practices and peformances, and pays attention to the suggestions.
Sixth, follow rule number six. That rule is to 'lighten up.'
Seventh, be present to the ways things are. Many of us are disconnected from reality. By re-touching it, we can see more possiblities.
Eighth, give way to passion. Going with your strong feelings allows you to be more authentic, and to go to new heights of accomplishment.
Ninth, light a spark. See you role as creating a spark of possibility to be lit that others can see.
Tenth, be the board of the game you are playing. This makes it easier to see how you can make a difference.
Eleventh, create a vision that generates 'frameworks of possibility' for others. Martin Luther King, Jr.'s famous 'I Have a Dream' speech is cited.
Twelfth, tell the WE story. Focus on being inclusive and considering what is best for all. Move from I to We, as the Coda to the book encourages.
Each section has exercises you can use to deepen your understanding of the principles and to help you practice, in order to create greater skill.
The principles are similar to those in many other books about improving performance and creativity. What is different about the book are the unique ways that the principles are expressed, the exciting examples in beautiful stories from music and business that will be new to you (as they were to me), and the passion with which the Zanders write. I would love to hear them do this book on an audio cassette! Both do public speaking, so you may get a chance to hear them.
Can we ever get too many great inspirational stories and reminders to live up to our potential rather than our pasts? I don't think so. This book will reignite your passion for making a larger and more positive difference. It will make you more human as you do so.
After you have finished the book, consider where your passion, gifts, and influence can combine to all you to most effectively live these principles. Consider that as a calling for at least some of your leisure time. If you are lucky, you can find some way to make that a primary calling for your working hours, as well. But find that place, and spend as much time as you can there!

Buck Up, Suck Up . . . and Come Back When You Foul Up: 12 Winning Secrets from the War Room Review

Buck Up, Suck Up . . . and Come Back When You Foul Up: 12 Winning Secrets from the War Room
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Caution: This book features lots of coarse language. If that sort of thing offends you, skip this book.
The two Democratic strategists combine to describe the key elements of how they feel that political candidates (whether Democrats or Republicans, conservatives or liberals) can win elections, and successfully pursue their agendas in office.
The general advice is to take the offense, and stay on it, even when on defense.
Let me paraphrase the key points into a shorter list to make the concepts more understandable:
1. If you keep trying your hardest to get elected, someday you will succeed. Abraham Lincoln is the prime example.
2. Honestly seek out allies when you need them to get elected. John F. Kennedy taking on Lyndon Johnson as his vice presidential candidate is the main example.
3. Attack your strongest candidate in the general election constantly above the belt. Attack first, attack hardest, and counter-attack first. The first Clinton presidential campaign is the main example.
4. Pick the issue where the strongest general election opponent is most vulnerable, and don't let go! "It's the economy, stupid!"
5. Tell your story unceasingly in a brief, emotional, unique, and relevant way. "Are you better off than you were four years ago?"
6. Be quick to lead with your mistakes, weaknesses, and flaws by realizing that people want to hear it from you first. They will find out anyway, and you can gain credibility and trust this way.
7. Once you are in office, use your political capital wisely where it will make a difference. Build on success!
I suspect that most of these points are not new to you. Why read the book, then? Actually, it's main appeal is in the self-deprecating humor the authors use in describing how determined people on both side of the political spectrum verbally wrestle for power. If you are a Republican or a conservative, you probably won't enjoy the book because there's lots of positive things said about the Democratic candidates the authors have assisted. The book also refers to Republicans, especially President Reagan, but much less intensively.
As examples of the humor, Mr. Carville tells how his mother used to sell encyclopedias to help support the family by looking for men with lots of kids and a bass boat, the book has chicken salad and French toast recipes, and the authors tell about their own personal awkward moments in campaigns.
Will you read about the political issues surrounding the most famous White House intern? Oh, yes. Perhaps more than you want to.
Why should you want to be in office? I suggest that you have a pretty good reason . . . or you won't want to live like this.
The authors leave it up to you as to whether the book applies to other fields. The section on Rule 7: Know How to Communicate was the only section that I thought provided any insights that you might not know already. But that section is quite well done, with vivid examples.
If you are like me, your biggest take-away from this book is how effective open, self-deprecating humor is.
Help others in all the ways you can!

Get Motivated: Overcome Any Obstacle, Achieve Any Goal, and Accelerate Your Success with Motivational DNA Review

Get Motivated: Overcome Any Obstacle, Achieve Any Goal, and Accelerate Your Success with Motivational DNA
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
WHAT I LIKED
1) Honesty upfront. The author plainly states that there is no 1 size fits all and you're free to disagree with her framwork.
2) A variety of helpful best practices for getting you motivated, despite what your personality may be.
3) The author does try to shove in as much information as possible.
WHAT'S LACKING
1) The study needs to be included as an appendix to the book. I would gladly add a star to my review for this. On page 5, the author tells us that the ". . . system that I am about to unveil is based on an eight-year study that my team and I have conducted with more than 10,000 people. It is a research-based, systematic approach to achievement--and it works." If you're going to claim that an approach is backed up by scientific data, then you have to provide more details about the data and the science that you used.
2) The middle core chapters fail to actually help you "get motivated". There's inspirational stories, lots of quotes, bulleted and numbered listes, but little in the way of actionable steps that help one become motivated. Let me use chapter 9 to illustrate:
i) 1 page story on Mother Theresa
ii) 1 page describing the temperment of internals
iii) 2 1/2 pages on the personal story of Joshua Hanson
iv) 1 page on Pat Riley
v) 1 1/2 pages of quotes by internals
vi) 1/2 page description of the communication style of internals and a bulleted list of how to communicate with internals
vii) 1 page description on how internals look at the world
viii) a bulleted list of 6 strengths of internals, including "virtuous character"
ix) 1/2 page of the weaknesses of internals
x) 1 page of what internals want at work
xi) 7 bullets on how to work with internals, including "demonstrate interest in their family, concerns, and passions".
xii) short descriptive sections (1/3 page or less each) on "internals at play", "internals in relationships", "resolving conflict with internals", and "value to organization"
xiii) 1/3 page on what de-motivates internals
xiv) 10 point list on what motivates internals
xv) 1 page on what rewards to give internals to motivate them
xvi) 1/4 page of "Advice for Internals"
See the problem here? Out of 16 pages in the chapter, only 1.6% of chapter 9 contained information about what internals were supposed to do to become motivated. Wasn't that the point of the book?
The author does include, in chapter 15, 4 pages on how she, as a someone of "variety" motivated herself to get serious about workouts through variety. Then in the Appendix A, there are several (typically 4) questions for each category that are supposed to be used by people to ask themselves in order to get better motivated. Even so, that's not enough. This book should have included instructive lessons on how to get motivated in each of the core DNA chapters backed up by multiple case studies, instead of the descriptions, quotes and bullet points.
I want this to be a 5 star book and here's 3 things the author could make to achieve that:
1) Make it easier for an individual to identify which DNA categories that they fall into. Be much more detailed, such as a list of 50 questions, instead of just describing general characteristics of a group.
2) Re-do the core chapters. First, begin with the purpose that the chapters MUST teach an individual how to improve their own motivation. If I'm buying a book on motivation, it must mean that I want someone else's advice on better ways to become motivated. Telling me characteristics about myself or how a boss might motivate me with recognition, private praise, etc. isn't of much help. Second, the items from Appendix A should be worked into the chapters. If this book is to be truly useful, it must be organized in a way that it can act as a reference. The styles in 7 Habits and How to Meet Friends are good examples of how to organize the content so that it is straightforward and can be used as a reference.
3) Add an appendix with detailed explanation of the research.

Your Road Map for Success: You Can Get There from Here Review

Your Road Map for Success: You Can Get There from Here
Average Reviews:

The following is what I liked best:
The section on Goals
They MUST be activities that are: written, personal, specific, achievable, measurable, and time sensitive.
The Quotes:
"You can not make any progress when you are facing the wrong way." & the another one by Charles 'Tremendous' Jones who said "The only difference between the person you are today and who you will be in 5 years come from the books you read and the people you associate with."
The Benchmarking idea:
To attain success you should ONLY pick 3 to 5 areas to work on & grow in at one time.
The section on Choices:
In order to make progress it will involve 3 choices: to gain something, to lose something, or to trade something
and when you choose: pick the former rather than latter:
Achievement over affirmation
Excellence over acceptability
Personal growth over pleasure
Future potential over personal gain
Narrow focus over scattered interests
Significance over security
And finally the Laws on Developing others:
Take someone with you: "There is no success without a successor"
Rating: Strong Buy

Peak: How Great Companies Get Their Mojo from Maslow (J-B US non-Franchise Leadership) Review

Peak: How Great Companies Get Their Mojo from Maslow (J-B US non-Franchise Leadership)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Chip Conley has a bold vision - he wants to use his company as an instrument to make the world a better place. Rarely have I heard a businessman state his vision so boldly and this alone deserves a cheer.
Joie de Vivre - a lot of persons will learn to pronounce this soon! - is a boutique hotel chain and each property is unique. I have stayed at two and I can testify that the servce is outstanding. If ever you find yourself in San Francisco stay at the Miyako in the heart of Japantown. The faux ricepaper screens and artwork will make you feel as if you are in Japan and the deep granite soak tub and private sauna in the suite will round out the feeling.
Chip draws heavily from the work of Abraham Maslow in running his business. Maslow, as any MBA will tell you, is the guy who came up with the notion of the "hierarchy of needs" which postulates that all humans have basic needs for things like food and shelter and, as these are satisfied, higher order needs like belonging and esteem open up. At the top is "self-actualization" which is a need to realize one's full potential. What I did not know till I read this book is that Maslow had spent a lot of time pondering the implications of his theory for business and had actually recorded his thoughts in books many of which are now out of print. I will now scour the Internet for these.
Chip's genius is that he came up with an organized and disciplined method of applying these principles to his operations. The book is basically divided into three parts - one dealing with employees, one with customers and the final one with investors. For each of these, he offers tips on how to meet their lower order needs and then lead the way to them fulfilling their higher order needs and seeing that they are doing so.
He walks his talk. For example, during the double whammy of the dot.com meltdown and the 9/11 induced travel recession the hotel industry in California fell off a cliff. Conley took no salary for more than three years maxing out his credit cards to live and persuaded his senior executives to take 10% pay cuts. In his own words "...you make the right choice and acknowledge that yur lowest-paid employees deserve the greatest support during the most difficult times." What a contrast from the typical approach of firing dozens of the rank and file while preserving top-management perks!
Half of Joie de Vivre's employees clean toilets and make beds, but Chip has them feeling valued and and instituted recognition programs that move them up Maslow's hierarchy. For example, even chambermaids get to stay free for a couple of nights at any of the chain hotel so they can experience the service as a customer. I want to make an important point here and this I got from personal conversations with him. He doesn't just make employess FEEL valued. He DOES value them and looks out for what he can do to make their lives more meaningful. In fact his life's meaning derives from success in doing so. So there are things like sabbaticals for employess and many other perks that you willfind out about when you read the book.
Customers are easy to fit in to the hierarchy. A lot has been written about how to deliver great customer service and Chip does his bit with things like clearly communicating what each of his hotels stands for. He trains all his employees - particularly porters, desk clerks and others who interact with guests - to lookout for ways in which to delight customers. Thus, for example, a guest celebrating a birthday will receive a cake or special gift. Good section with lots of examples from other companies, but nothing stand-out here.
Investors are another story. I have never heard it explicitly mentioned that entrepreneurs should satisfy investors basic need - for return on investment and safety of principal for instance - and then move them higher up the scale as well. But Chip does this in various ways from only selecting investors who are aligned with his own values to drawing them into his vision for what each property is and can be. He describes a process where every consittuency, including investors, provides ideas about how to uniquely position each prospective hotel.
Conley totally disagrees with conventional wisdom that states 1) Money is the primary motivator for employees. He demonstrates that they come alive when you address thier higher order needs. 2) Customers stay loyal when they are satisfied. Satisfied customers are the minimum level to stay in business. You have to continually earn their loyalty by delighting them. and 3) Investors are exclusively focused on financial returns. This is important, but they will cut you a lot of slack if you keep them informed and make them feel as if they are in a cause that they believe in.
So, read this book and become an entrepreneur and do likewise. And please, pretty please with sugar and cream, let me buy some your stock BEFORE you go public.

Memos from the Chairman Review

Ah - a book that recalls the days when people wanted to work for corporations! As a former employee of Bear Stearns who received some of the memos in this book, I can say that those memos created an atmosphere of comraderie and humor during the recession of the early '90s. Back then, Bear Stearns was considered a great place to work. Of course, Mr. Greenberg is not running the company anymore. At that time, BSC was one of the largest banking institutions in the world, and every level of employee was very proud of his or her role in the success of the company. I recommend this book for managers who need to remember who is really doing the work!!

Demystifying Dissertation Writing: A Streamlined Process from Choice of Topic to Final Text Review

Demystifying Dissertation Writing: A Streamlined Process from Choice of Topic to Final Text
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Dr. Single really does "demystify" the dissertation (and Master's thesis) writing process and provide a great deal of very useful information on how to WRITE a dissertation. She doesn't get into the research process (we get trained pretty well for that already), rather she focuses on what is needed to put words on "paper" and get this important milestone in an academic career written.
The ability to write the actual dissertation (thesis) appears to be something that is taken as a given by administrators in many PhD (Masters) programs. Perhaps it is because the students have actually made it into the program and to do so, they must have written many papers. The work required to write a (multi?) hundred page work is an order of magnitude higher than writing a class paper. Fortunately, Dr. Single breaks it down into manageable pieces. A series of ~forty page "papers", if you will. The dissertation becomes approachable and something that can be accomplished.
She also dispenses with two (IMO, fatal) "myths" that (1) you need to have a large block of time to write and (2) you should know everything about your topic before you start writing.
I have a family and between the family and other obligations, finding large blocks of time was almost impossible, thus dramatically slowing down my writing. Now I grab every opportunity to write, no matter how short. For me, the real benefit was that I am now always writing and because I am always writing, I am always thinking about my dissertation! And because I'm always thinking about my dissertation (even on a sub-conscious level), I am gaining insights and MAKING PROGRESS I was not before buying this book. I enjoy writing again!
Now, I am always writing. I no longer worry about knowing everything about the field or making it perfect. I just get the words down and know that I will be able to edit/revise them later. If I find a hole in my knowledge, I can fill it while writing. Most importantly, I am now giving my chair and committee members something to read and provide feedback on. It is good for them because they can see the work I am doing and I can get much needed feedback!
In addition, Dr. Single emphasizes creating writing support groups with your peers to help with various issues that come up during the dissertation and to provide useful constructive criticisms, advice, and information.
Finally, in what was the biggest surprise for me in the book, she provides a very efficient way to take useful "Citeable Notes" that are immediately useful in your dissertation. I had not realized how inefficient I was in note taking and how my focus when taking notes was not assisting me in finishing my dissertation. Learning her method for reading articles and note taking while using a reference program like Endnote, Reference Manager, etc. was truly an epiphany. For me, learning this one thing was easily worth the price of the book by itself.
IMO, the only shortcoming in the book is that it needs a full chapter on the dissertation proposal process and the differences in approach and process for writing the proposal vs. the final dissertation. Fortunately, there are currently a couple highly rated books here on Amazon.com on how to complete the proposal process.
However, do not take this as a reason to not buy this book! Rather, it is just an area I would like to see Dr. Single address in her next edition.
This book provides Dr. Single's 15+ years of experience guiding students through their dissertation and teaching the writing course at the University of Vermont. She has the experience and insights to help you know you too can finish your dissertation! Best of all, the price is such that it should not break the budget of students on a tight budget.
The bottom line is this book is about WRITING the dissertation. It is focused on that topic. Whether you are a PhD student in the middle of your coursework, ABD, an adviser/committee member, someone teaching a graduate-level research writing seminar, or a family member/friend of someone who is working on their dissertation, you should get this book! You would be sorry if you did not.

I have to say that I disagree with the majority of the previous reviewers, in that this book is really not that useful in my eyes. While it does have a few famous and inspirational quotes, it is definitley not worth paying $15 for. Like other readers have mentioned, the book is 50 pages long, with half of them being illustrations. The other 25 pages contain from 4-5 quotes each, for a total of maybe 100 quotes in the entire book. This is the type of book that you would expect to pay $3.95 for at a bookstore, and definitly not $14.95. My suggestion would be to stay away from this book. You are better off getting quotes off the Internet. Just my opinion...

Words That Matter: A Little Book of Life Lessons Review

Words That Matter: A Little Book of Life Lessons
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I was eagerly anticipating this book, having loved Oprah's inspirational style and all the incredible people she seems to be surrounded by. This would be a book with the very best tidbits of 10 years compilation from Oprah Magazine...so what could possibly be better than that?
Well, the lovely cover makes this appear like a jewel, but inside was actually rather bland. Page after page was filled with single sentences by various important people of our time (and some good old tried & true as well). Without any inside "art" or decorative formulation, it looked a bit more like a textbook than a light, fun read. Perhaps the simplicity was intentional, so as not to take away from the content, but it resulted in something that was actually a little boring.
That said, Oprah certainly knows how to put together great minds, and the contributors were a fantastic group of people. Not all of what they had to say was "inspirational", some was more advice-like, or common sense wisdom. It's also possible, in my opinion, that the book could have been edited a bit further, as this did not feel like just the "best of the best". Rather, it was as if there was a tidbit from every interview and/or article from O Magazine ever written. There were many sentences that really said nothing special or new to me. Maybe that's because I am a subscriber to O, and have simply seen it all before.
This is still a sweet little book, geared primarily toward women & more precisely, adults. I had thought this might be a fabulous graduation gift but I don't feel it has the tone of something appealing to a college grad. However, Oprah followers and those who love her magazine contributors (Suze Orman on finance, for example) and her friends (Maya Angelou, and more of course) will probably enjoy it, though they may have the same experience of deja vu that I have had. I suppose if we are to be experiencing anything more than once, it might as well be something positive.

I have never been so let down by a book. Bad grammar, bad editing, no page numbers, multiple repeated quotes, the same quotes credited to different authors, and 80% of the material was related to the government and/or war. What a complete waste.
