Author Joe Tye ( a former hospital CEO) is now the CEO of Values Coach Inc., where he specializes in values-based leadership. Together with his co-author, Dick Schwab, the pair answers the question; what would Florence do if she were to face the health care crisis of today?
In The Florence Prescription, The authors diagnose the current crisis as a crisis of culture and confidence. I couldn't agree more. The pair created a fiction-based story to demonstrate how Florence Nightingale would tackle the demands of the 21st century health care system. Although the setting is a fictional hospital with fictional employees and situations, the essence of the story is the importance of being patient-centered in everything that we do.
We all like to think that we are patient-centered, but the harsh reality is that we spend more time talking about our patient-centeredness than actually achieving it. The authors push the reader to think about the prevailing attitudes and culture that prevent our healthcare organizations from being the patient-centered organizations that we advertise. They promote empowerment and engagement with a memorable catch phrase - Proceed until Apprehended. If every fully engaged employee would be supported to proceed until apprehended, health care would have a much different look and feel.
Hats off to Joe Tye and Dick Schwab for telling a story worth sharing. I highly recommend it for all health care leaders but would love for it to be required reading for every nurse manager.
