Called Up: Stories of Life and Faith from the Great Game of Baseball Review

Well this really wasn't a "life-changin" kind of book but it was very entertaining. I am a big baseball fan and I absolutely loved Dave's baseball stories from a christian perspective. It's got some great stories about different players and a good perspective on being a christian in the major leagues. If you are a fan of sports then I definately recommend this one.

During eight seasons of major league baseball, pitcher Dave Dravecky learned more than the importance of getting ahead in the count or wasting a pitch when he had the batter in the hole with an 0-2 count. Baseball taught him lessons he could apply to his life and his relationship with God. That's what Called Up is about. In this fast-moving and compelling book, Dravecky retells classic baseball stories and introduces readers to some of baseball's greatest players---and characters. Taking you inside the game, his insights will prompt you to think. You'll actually feel the tension, for instance, as you relive the final three outs in Sandy Koufax's electrifying no-hitter against the Chicago Cubs in 1965. And as you consider the huge odds Koufax faced, you'll be encouraged about your own performance in this pressure-cooker world. In life, unlike baseball, no one pitches a no-hitter---and thanks to God's grace, you don't have to. Filled with well-researched stories and spiritual insights, along with hilarious quotes from the players, Called Up also tells you about:* Branch Rickey's secret ambition to integrate Major League baseball* how Jackie Robinson's faith sustained him in 1947, the year he broke the color barrier * why freezing Ted Williams' body so he can one day be resurrected doesn't make sense* the wit, wisdom, and spiritual truths behind Yogi Berra's sayings * Dravecky's all-time, all-century, best-ever All-Star team* the challenges Dravecky faced living out his Christian faith in front of his teammatesGod doesn't waste any pitches when it comes to teaching you about life from the game of baseball. You'll love the breezy stories, the quick applications, the timeless thoughts and funny quotes in Called Up. Are you ready for the first pitch? Good---because the umpire is yelling, 'Play ball!'

Trusting in the Names of God: Drawing Strength from Knowing Who He Is Review

Trusting in the Names of God: Drawing Strength from Knowing Who He Is
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Trusting in the Names of God by Catherine Martin is the most recent addition to Martin's growing repertoire of outstanding devotionals. Honestly, when I see her name on a book, I know that it's going to help me grow spiritually, and it immediately goes on my wish list. In Trusting, Martin takes the Biblical names of God (Elohim, Yahweh, Abba, etc) and puts them into a 30 day Bible study taking the reader deep into Scripture and giving new understanding of the nature of God. She gives information about the character of each name and how we can rely on it. I've used Abba in my praying, but I had never used the other names before, and I found that my prayers took on a new life when I specifically addressed prayers to names. Yahweh Sabaoth, the deliverer, is the name that held the most power to me. When I was reading in Jeremiah several months ago, I kept coming across that name in my reading, and while I knew it was important, I didn't understand how it applied to me and what was going on in my life. Martin really helps the reader understand that while all of the names apply to the same God, they are different aspects of her character that help us to understand and love him better.

Sorry, but this book was not as good as the first one entitled, "His Princess: Love Letters from Your King."
It was very similar, but if you get the first one, that's all you need. I gave "His Princess Bride: Love Letters from your Prince" away to someone. They will enjoy it, since they don't have any of her books yet.

A gem of a book that couples Bonhoeffers's poems with insightful commentery. Brings the time, place and sinificance of each verse into pellucidity.

Advent and Christmas Wisdom From G. K. Chesterton Review

Advent and Christmas Wisdom From G. K. Chesterton
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This contains many of the great writers wittiest and most profound observations on faith and the meaning of Christmas. Some of them are taken from his well known books, but there are also many taken from his lesser known writings. For the Chesterton fan, there may be a surprise or two; for others, this is an enjoyable introduction. It also contains bible readings and prayers for each day of advent, related to the Chesterton quote. But the best part is the activity for each day. They are practical, creative ideas for putting into practice the spiritual values of the readings for the day. The activities are appropriate for adults and school age children. Its a great way to make this advent a memorable one.

As one of the few relatively recent Christian writers who are admired and quoted by Christians at all ends of the spectrum, G.K Chesterton was known as a remarkable and diverse but extremely influential English writer. His inexhaustible and wide ranging portfolio of works includes journalistic writing, poetry, biography, Christian, fantasy and detective genres. His style is distinctive and always marked by humility, consistency, irony, wit and wonder. Some of his most enduring books include The Everlasting Man, which led C.S. Lewis to become a Christian and The Napoleon of Notting Hill which inspired Michael Collins to lead a movement for Irish independence. G.K. Chesterton is sometimes referred to as the most unjustly neglected writer of our time. One reason might be his versatility and the inability for modern thinkers, theologians and commentators to pigeonhole him. We challenge you to enjoy his remarkable style, eloquence and faith-based writing at this joyous time of the year. In this edition of Advent and Christmas Wisdom, each day's reflection includes a selection from one of Chesterton's finest works, a suitable Scripture verse, an appropriate prayer, and an exercise. This addition to one of Liguori's best-selling series is truly a refreshing, prayerful preparation for the coming of Christ at Christmas.

His Princess Warrior: Love Letters for Strength from Your Lord Review

His Princess Warrior: Love Letters for Strength from Your Lord
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I think this is an excellent book. I look forward to reading a couple of pages of this book each morning. "His Princess Warrior" is written in a two part format. The first page talks about one's position as a daughter of the King - hence the "Princess" part of the title. This is followed by a picture and a scripture verse connected to the message. The next page is a prayer that challenges or encourages one to go and do a specific task that God has designed for each of his children - hence the "Warrior" part. Again, this page is followed by a picture and relevant verse. I love the balance between knowing who we are and then going wherever God is sending us.
I would highly recommend this to anyone who is serious about following Christ. Without the regular reminder of who our Father is and who we are, the task can become overwhelming. But, coupled with the knowledge of God's love for us we can attack the strongholds of the enemy that we encounter every day.

This Little Light: Lessons in Living from Sister Thea Bowman Review

This Little Light: Lessons in Living from Sister Thea Bowman

This Little Light is a beautiful book about Sister Thea Bowman, a black Franciscan nun from rural Mississippi. Sister Thea was an inspiration to many in her blending of Catholicism with the African-American experience. Her devotion may have followed an unusual path, but she inspired many with her spirit and changed the lives of many. McGrath's paintings help make her spirit more accessible to the reader with their vibrant colors and beautiful motion. This book has inspired me to learn more about this most interesting woman.

I have many devotional books, but very few have found their way into my morning quiet-time ritual. But from the first day I began "His Princess" I knew this was a book I wanted to read every day. Encouraging and insightful, this book reminds me how special I am to my Lord. I love this book!

This beautiful four-color book opens the eyes of women to see themselves the way God sees them. Many don't even know that they are daughters of the King - chosen to be His Princess. Somewhere between childhood and adulthood, they trade in their fairy-tale dreams of being cherished for a tarnished identity fashioned by their own insecurities and the mixed-up messages of the media. Now, these tenderly adoring letters written from God's persepective demonstrate that every woman is beautiful just the way she is. Walking in confidence toward her God-given purpose, every woman can bless others - even future generations.

A Year with C. S. Lewis: Daily Readings from His Classic Works Review

A Year with C. S. Lewis: Daily Readings from His Classic Works
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
A C. S. Lewis devotee knows that Lewis died the same day as President Kennedy. Though it's not mentioned in the jacket copy --- and the book includes no introduction --- that forty-year commemoration might have been the catalyst for this new compilation of 366 daily readings drawn from what the publisher calls his (capital-letter) Signature Classics: MERE CHRISTIANITY, THE SCREWTAPE LETTERS, THE GREAT DIVORCE, THE PROBLEM OF PAIN, MIRACLES and A GRIEF OBSERVED, plus (apparently perceived in some other category) THE WEIGHT OF GLORY and THE ABOLITION OF MAN.
Drawing on this bank, this book provides food for thought more than for devotion. Readers looking for a devotional aid will need to make a conscious leap to apply the material to a personal line of prayer. And yet the presented theological, philosophical and sociological points, all focused by Lewis's Christian worldview, do serve to draw the reader to a keener awareness of God's presence, character and role; his being, creations and relationships.
The one-page selections have been deftly arranged by Patricia Klein, who in times past edited the annual Cahill calendars featuring quotable lines from Lewis and his Inkling cohorts. She has given each reading a clear but not clever title that orients readers going into a selection and grounds them coming out: "Love the Sinner . . .", "The Real Test", "Nice Is Not Enough", and "How Marriage Reconciles."
Her selections are well organized. Each stands on its own, but many, usually from one source, for four or five days at a time thematically build on one another. We spend a week in March, for example, noting the pitfalls of pride (from MERE CHRISTIANITY) before being introduced to "Humility 101" (from THE SCREWTAPE LETTERS).
Although the first SCREWTAPE entry (January 13) includes a paragraph that explains the first-person, demonist voice of this novel, an unwary reader unfamiliar with that book's tongue-in-cheek style can be confused later on. Trying to head off said confusion, Klein has added an italicized tag onto each SCREWTAPE reading (i.e., "Screwtape reveals a powerful tool for distraction").
I personally connected most with Lewis, the man, in his readings from A GRIEF OBSERVED, in which he mourns the death of his wife. But I also connected with Lewis's God in selections from MERE CHRISTIANITY and THE WEIGHT OF GLORY.
The volume is nicely packaged: a ribbon bound into the spine to mark your place, a table of contents on a part-title page at the beginning of each month, three book-end indices. When I turned a page, I first glanced to the bottom, anticipating an occasional date-specific Lewis-biographical event: a book publication, an academic achievement, a family birth or death --- November 22, 1963, "Lewis dies at 5:30 P.M. at The Kilns, one week short of his sixty-fifth birthday. . . "
Most readings are three, four, five times longer than the one I cite below (September 27), which is the shortest in the book. As compiled in A YEAR WITH . . . Lewis only occasionally quotes Scripture and never more aptly than here, speaking of the apostle Peter's seaside conversation with Jesus: "There are questions at issue between Christians to which I do not think we have been told the answer. There are some to which I may never know the answer: if I asked them, even in a better world, I might (for all I know) be answered as a far greater questioner was answered: 'What is that to thee? Follow thou Me.' "

Hearing from God Each Morning: 365 Daily Devotions (Faith Words) Review

Hearing from God Each Morning: 365 Daily Devotions (Faith Words)
Average Reviews:

Relationships. They aren't easy and good ones don't just happen. If you want a good, strong relationship with someone, you have to work at it. You have to make a commitment. The more we invest in a relationship with another who cares for us, the better it will be. And the same goes with God. If we truly want a good, strong relationship where we can solely rely on God, we must make a commitment and work at it.
Joyce Meyer's Hearing from God Each Morning--365 Daily Devotions can help you strengthen your relationship with God through her daily meditations. This guide serves as a reminder to what is really important and to be able to recognize God's voice through all the noise of the world.
The readings are short and begin with a biblical quote followed by a short essay by Joyce. It ends with God's Word for You Today. I found these daily readings to be insightful and powerful. They applied to everyday life and reminded me where my focus needed to be at. Joyce writes in a down-to-earth clear cut manner, and really drives her point home. The readings are inspirational and positive. They really encourage you to grasp God's message and do His works.
I have many daily devotionals and usually find I read a few pages and the book gets pushed by the wayside. This one, however, will not. I was eager to read the next pages and will continue to reread this book. This devotional made me think more about my relationship with God and listen more closely to his Word.
This is a great book for yourself and would also make a wonderful gift.
Note: I received a copy of this book from Hachette Book Group for review purposes. The opinions in this review are honest and my own.
